View 5 RepliesLike many other users I see on this forum, which I think is great by the way, I am new to the game of Vista and find that i have much to learn. I have a question regarding Graohics cards for someone to answer. I am running an ATI (POwerColor) 4850 and the local company that built the computer for me claims that the ATI Catalyst Control Centre will not run properly with Vista x64 systems. The card itself is running fine, but I began qustioning them on this when I found no control centre installed. The CCC apparently causes the card to crash quite often, so they suggested I only install the driver and not the CCC the next time I update. Makes me a little nervous to install the 8.12 driver now!!

I am running Vista 32-bit with the a XFX Radeon HD4850 graphics card with dual DVI. Seems that for some reason the ATI Catalyst software will not install. Tried to download the newest version with the same problems.
I cannot install any ATI driver on my Vista! after the installation exe begins, it goes into a detecting phase. Then it says "Fail to find any installable component"; and, the error msg is "Cannot detect any compatible ATI hardware" Workaround: Install the driver thru Vista's Device Manager. However, Catalyst control center doesn't install in this way.

Currently after posting this topic in another forum, there seems to be no solution. Here is my conclusions from the situation. Sleep mode with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit does not work with multidisplays, using the radeon HD4850 running Catalyst 8.7 or Catalyst 8.8, when returning from sleep mode. It works only on a single display and will not work even when the secondary display is disabled. Monitors will display a blank screen and the power lights will flash indicating they are in standby even after the system has been restored from sleep mode. The secondary monitor must be physically detached from the graphics card (remove the DVI, AGP, or S-Video cable) for the system to return from sleep mode.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to uninstall ati catalyst 9.2 so i can try ati catalyst 9.7 with sims 2 and see if it has compatibility issues like 9.3-9.6 had for me.ATI catalyst 9.2 was all i could get to work with sims 2 and i want to try 9.7 to see what happens.
When i selected the ati catalyst icon in control panel to uninstall an error message appeared about ati catalyst installation manager stopped working.I did get the screen for removing the ati software and pressed next,but nothing happened except the ati catalyst icon in the programs section of control panel disappeared without actually uninstalling the driver/catalyst software.
Also,i retried uninstalling by pressing setup.exe in c:/ati/support/9-2_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_75977/setup.exe
all that happens is that catalyst install manager stopped working error messages pop up and also i get problems and solutions icon appear after each uninstall failure regarding "solve a problem with microsoft visual studio".It's about this....

I cannot play some games. The only thing what was changed is my new LCD 24'' monitor. But I think, this is not a problem, because I tried to connect my old 19'' CRT monitor and these games are not playable. I tried reinstall catalyst, but nothing has changed

The problems still there but i found something out. as i did a fresh install of windows 7 my video driver was wiped. I installed CCC thinking that the driver came with it like ATI said but that did not work. I am back to the standard vga adapter. then my Control Center started working... but i cant use it cuz i did not have the driver installed. WTF man??? So i got another ATI driver from the website and then installed it. but it went back to the error code B3X64.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOk this is not the same problem as the security centre cant be started issue. I can start thee service by going into services setting it to automatic stat up and clicking start service.
My problem is it after i click ok and go out of the properties box the security center start up gets set to disabled again. No matter what i do i cant set it to automatic/automatic(delayed start) and every time i start the pc i have to go into services and enable it manually. its highly irritating.
I have had a few dramas, have had a factory reset, warranty issues you name it. have loaded all back in again, have had some Malware issues, all has been solved. Finally I think my computer is working properly again, happy days.Wanted to whack on some random tunes from Media Centre and found that it no longer exists on computer. I have looked at Microsoft site and can't sem to find a download for Windows Vista Media Player.

I'm tired of looking at various buttons and banners from assorted software apps, visited websites etc and maps of europe from my tomtom backup. I tried changing the stetting in the Library option to no avail - even with no directories set to watch, it still pulls in picture files from random locations - is there any way of controlling where media centre gets it's pictures from. I have a single directory with all my photos - how can i get it just to use this directory?

Whereas AVG reports "All security features are working correctly and are up to date" although I have inward and outward email checking turned off. View 4 Replies View RelatedI m running Windows Vista Home Basice Off of a Compaq presario CQ40 Notebook PC 32-bit OS. I was using my comp on wireless internet, turned it off and when i came back to it my firewall all of a sudden was busted. I have gone into Windows Security Centre and it comes up with the four options, Firewall, Automatic Updating, Malware Protection and Other Security Options. Now Firewall says Off. Automatic updating says Off. Malware protection says Check Settings, and Other is OK!. Now I click on the option under firewall to turn it on and it comes up saying Security Centre can't turn on windows firewall. Now underneath that it says turn it on manually, so i click that and i get another screen with a warning box saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recomended settings to protect your computer.
To the right of that there is an update settings now button, i click that and im sent to a Windows needs your permission to continue screen where i select continue. Now i get a screen saying Windows firewall was unable to make the requested updates. Also since this has happened my Optus wireless internet wont connect which means no internet access on that notebook, and now my iphone is not detected by itunes............
New computer.Keyboard not typing properly.DELL disabled background programs, side bar and upper horizontal icons on monday. 1 mth free Mcafee came with computer. Today I checked SECURITY CENTRE and it says: Warning,the security centre has not recorded an antivirus product.Cause: either its not installed or not recognized. solution: verify that its installed. Disabling programs DOESNT delete them does it? i'm sure i saw Mcafee in the files somewhere. How do i confirm for myself its still installed? and how do i verify to security centre that its installed. there were no options to click on.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an 10/100 wired connection through a linksys router to an XBOX 360 and am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I've had ZERO succuss in playing MCE content - ie MP3s and viewing JPGs - on the XBox.
The Media Center menus on the Xbox are intolerably slow, taking 5-30 seconds to respond. Eventually if I have the patience to wait until the XBOX Media center accesses the files located on the Vista machine it takes upwards of 2 minutes just to load one jpg. When I run the tune network tool in WMC I get a message saying that:
"Your network may not have enough bandwidth for consistent performance on your extender device."
When I view the performance graph in the tool my bandwith barely registers on the graph.
Other things I have tried to no avail:
- turned off all firewalls
- unitstalled anti-virus software
- port forwarded the following ports in the router, TCP2869, TCP10243,
UDP1900, UDP10280 to UDP10284
- played with the flow control settings
- tried selecting all possible "speed & duplex" settings
Support from Microsoft sucks:mad:. The XBox people have pawned me off on the Vista support people. I wouldn't let the Vista support people hand me back to the XBox people...although they tried pretty hard. The Vista support people are saying they need to recreate the problem in their lab and get back to me.
I have had this new HP vista media centre computer for 2 weeks, and can't get Media Centre to play 1/2 the 500 gb worth of movies that my old XP media Centre played without any trouble at all! Some are MPEG-4, others are div-x, some are Dvd format. I have seen others with similar posts in other forums and I have loaded up all the lates codecs (safe one) from Divx, and ffdshow etc... I have to play all my movies with Nero or Media Player, which both have no issues with. I feel like this is a dud, and can't believe that a full hard recovery is worth the trouble.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOriginally my intention was to go the whole nine yards with WMC, ie, the dual digital TV tuners/PVR thing etc etc. However, I ended up getting a deal on a Sky+ box, so, long story short, I really just use it to play music and movies. I don't have an extensive picture library and so on, so I just get it to watch the Music and Movie directories. All the others have been removed from the watch-list and now I would like these other folders to die with dignity as far as the main interface is concerned. I don't want to have to go up (to Pictures) then across to Videos. I know this may seem as if I would be interested in hiring someone to do my breathing for me, and maybe I won't lose any sleep over it, but I would like to slim down the primary interface if it can be done.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Window Vista Home Premium SP1 and have been unable to start WMC using the remote control, shortcuts or by running the ehshell.exe both normally and as administrator. When I try to start WMC using any of the above it looks like the programme trys to start (blue circle appears for a few seconds) then nothing happens.
The last time I tried to open MCE I recieved the following error message: - C:WINDOWSehomeehshell.exe "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Every few days after restarting the PC an icon appears on the system tray informing me that WMC is downloading guide information from the net for the TV channel listing. When I right click on the icon and select open WMC I get the following error message: - "Unable to start Windows Media Centre"
I have tried setting up a new shortcut, uninstalled and reinstalled SP1 and have installed the latest driver for my video card NVIDIA GeForce 7650 GS driver 7.15.11.7490 and have still been unable to resolve the problem. i have avg free antivirus on my computer and it updates and checks every time i turn my computer on but windows security centre is saying i don't have an anti virus. also is says windows defender is turned off but i can't work out how to turn it on.
View 6 Replies View RelatedTuesday I finally had my system running like I wanted it to. I run Home Premium 64 bit SP1. So I thought I should make a full backup of of all my documents on the internal harddisk and the external harddisk as well. I did this with the built-in backup centre. The backup was made to DVD's. The first attempt failed. My wife was working on her account, while backup was running on my account. It just stopped for an unknown reason.
I started another full backup and got a blue screen when changing DVD's. The Problems and Solutions function did'nt come up with a solution. This happened three times in total. Today I finally finished this backup (it picks up where it left of). My system is running fine otherwise. My harddisk is fine. HDTune doesnt show any bad sectors. I suspect it's a driver problem of sorts, but i'd like to have a definitive answer...........
I've used Windows all the way from Windows 95 up to the latest incarnation, none of the previous versions have been so buggy, unreliable or slow as Vista. I have a brand new PC with 2 gigs of ram and Vista is just out of its depth. Start up takes for ever, it often hangs on shut down, Explorer is constantly re starting, media centre is slow and crashes, side bar is constantly crashing, blocked start up programmes keep restarting even though they've been blocked, the latest problem, after a windows update, my Vista ready printer is now incompatible, the printer support know its a problem and they're rushing to update their drivers. Each time Windows updates I lose my optical drive and have to alter the registry, a known problem with half a fix. System restore won't restore, just like the problem they had in ME.
The people I bought the PC from, a big well known company, said yes they know the issues and are as frustrated as it customers. All in all its a disgrace and I feel I have been taken as a mug by Bill Gates, now to add insult to injury Gates is talking about the next new OS with in the next year or two, as things stand now a PC with a Windows OS is just going to b a liability to any one buying one, the future to me looks PC free. For the record I'm not a Linux freak, I've been down that road, its as bad as the rocky Microsoft road.

Every time I turn on my computer it tells me that the Windows Security Centre is at risk. I have Nortons IS installed as my Anti Virus program, and I know this overrides the WSC, but how do I stop the Windows icon from showing my computer is at risk when I start up. I read that the Windows SC is only a warning, it does not save you from viruses, is that correct?
