When I try to open any of the games included with my Vista x64 premium, I get the error message: "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel". When I check the associations, it tells me the games are associated to their respective exe files. Am I missing something here? Is this secret Vista business?

I have went into my control panel and then into programs/default and that brought up a screen with names such Windows email on the left side of the screen and then at the bottom of the screen were two items listed which I have now forgotten what was listed; however, I clicked on both of them and found nothing to indicate what to do or where to go to next so please can you give me step by step instructions. All I am trying to do is open an attachment to an email and I receive the message I need to create an association in set association control panel.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn late February of 2007 I purchased a new computer with Vista Premium x86 preinstalled. The Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD was included with the computer. In late February of 2007 I also purchased the retail Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVDs from OfficeMax and did a clean x86 install from boot using the retail DVD.
I would like to uninstall my Vista Ultimate and reinstall it with SP1 already integrated within the OS. I always like to install an OS with the service pack already included within the install as opposed to downloading and installing the service pack into an existing installed OS. Personally, I feel this is always the best way to go although many people think otherwise. Is there a way for me to do this using the Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD? It has never been used before. Are the different versions of Vista actually on the Anytime Upgrade DVD or does the DVD "phone home" for the correct OS once the license key is provided? I've never had a need to use the Anytime Upgrade DVD so I am ignorant as to how it works. If I am indeed able to install Vista Ultimate SP1 by using the Anytime Upgrade DVD could I do it upon the release of SP1 on 03/18/2008 or would I have to wait until mid-April when it is released for automatic updates?.........
The new Service Pack 1 version of Windows Vista allows end users to purchase the "upgrade edition" and install it on any PC - with no need to purchase the more expensive "full edition."
The same behavior was present when Vista was originally released, but the fact that the trick wasn't removed from SP1 suggests that Microsoft executives approved the back door as a way to make the price of Vista more appealing to sophisticated buyers.
Previous Windows version not needed for upgrade
Just after Vista was first released to consumers on Jan. 30, 2007, an article in the Windows Secrets Newsletter explained that the upgrade edition of the operating system could be installed on a "clean" hard drive. For whatever reason, Vista had been programmed to accept itself as a "qualifying product." This eliminated any need for users to purchase the full edition of Vista or to upgrade Vista only over an older instance of Windows.
I'm having a problem with my system. It randomly freezes, I have no idea why and most times its when I'm doing something differently. Its freezed during 2 different games, during a burning of a cd, and even while trying to get into the favorites menu on internet exlorer.. I tried looking in the event viewer for the system but not sure what I need to look for. I have no viruses according to Nod32. I am open to advice ranging from one of them being superior, to they all are inferior, to which one sucks the least, or even the one easiest to remove without hosing the system before installing a different suite.
I also have available Kaspersky 7.0 (which I know will update when installed) with one more available computer on its license. It is running fine on two Vista Home Premium 32 bit systems.
Am trying to turn OFF Win firewall, yet it's nowhere to be found. (Yes, it is on and running) except for a shortcut link which also does not show up (C:ProgramDataMicrosofWindowsStartMenuPrograms). No folder (hidden included) exists for it anywhere and it has no icon in the control panel either.

(Though that doesn't mean one hasn't been posted; my searching skills may just be crappy.) Regardless, has anyone had this, or a similar issue, occur? Or does anyone know how to add your own "details" to choose from so I can get it back manually? I saw this: Folder Size for Windows Explorer. Just ran Quake4 at full specs and had Nvidia performance control panel turn the fan to 90%... but would like to monitor the temps and frame rates on this and other games. 9800GT 1GB. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Virtual CD installed on my computer and it was handling .iso files and a very useful feature it had, it caused some options to appear in the context menu of the file (i.e. right clicking on the file) to be able to directly insert the .iso file into a virtual drive. But then I installed WinRAR and regretfully (!!!) I chose WinRAR to associate with .iso files ... and I lost those useful options in the context menu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe aftermath of a trojan attack (Vista Guardian) has resulted in the file association of exe files being lost and hence an inability to run exe files. I am quite convinced that the trojan is now dead, but I can't figure out how to fix the damage. If I could get into the registry I could fix it, but of course regedit is an exe file so I can't run it. I've tried tricks like running it from command line or from inside a batch file but with no joy. I have also made a copy and called it regedit.com. This looked romising as Vista asked for user permission to run the program, but then nothing. It gets killed off before it starts. I am not familiar with the particular machine, nor am I very familiar with Vista and I am now at a loss as to how to proceed.

View 8 Replies View RelatedComputer Club member's Windows Vista Home Premium. The message above says it all. No .exe file will run. I have drilled down to winword.exe, and double clicked. I have clicked icons on the desktop. I have clicked programs on the start menu. In safe mode, I have downloaded a new version of Windows Installer, when Run is clicked the subject message appears.
When using Window Explorer, no .exe file has an icon associated with it! When I open Programs & Features in the Control Panel. Programs cannot be removed as the subject message appears.
I have been having problems running my accounts program (QuickBooks Regular 2006.) Having visited the Intuit website, I reinstalled the software again as they advised but the problem still remains so I think it is in fact an issue with Vista instead.
It brings up a dialog box that says "c:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooks RegularComponentsSales TaxSalesTax2523.xml" as the title and "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." I've looked in Control Panel ---> Default Programs on Vista and XML files don't seem to be associated with any program at all.
A friend installed the Powerpoint viewer. He's still having problems with the file association throwing an error when doubling clicking in Windows Mail. I seem to recall that there was a specific Vista Bug/Fix in this area. Any pointers?
