I'm having a problem with my system. It randomly freezes, I have no idea why and most times its when I'm doing something differently. Its freezed during 2 different games, during a burning of a cd, and even while trying to get into the favorites menu on internet exlorer.. I tried looking in the event viewer for the system but not sure what I need to look for. I have no viruses according to Nod32. I have Vista Ultimate running on amd 3700, 1 gb ram, 75gb hard drive, geforce 8800 gts graphics card, ecs motherboard and a dvd burner. Here is a HiJackThis log................

I have an issue wherein Vista (Ultimate 64-bit) Will freeze up completely forcing me to reset / reboot. This has occurred a few days after I put the computer together and installed all the software. It does not happen reliably. The first two times it happened, I was using Firefox in a window, in front of a video game (in windowed mode). This does not happen every time I do that, and has not happened from doing that in about a week.
The problem recently resurfaced in a more reliable fashion while using the Play-On media server software to stream Hulu to my Xbox. The computer froze after about 5 minutes of doing this, and then after about 8 minutes of doing this. I re-installed the most recent network driver, and tried switching ethernet ports. Next time it happened after about 10 minutes, twice in a row. So this is a very reliable circumstance to cause the freeze..........

I know this is not new but after some time using vista the system just freezes, no sound, no UI, then all of a sudden it tries to generate a report with the blue screen of death... fails and then restarts. At the moment the machine restarts.
BAM! The system says there is no hard drive and no booteable devices. I unplug everything. power off the system and then on again and then vista loads normally WTH!?

It's weird, my mouse randomly freezes for about half a second to about 5 seconds from time to time. Sometimes it get stuck permanently, but will work if I unplug it from the USB port and plug it back in. Everything continues to function normally, so it doesn't appear as if other things are freezing up in any way. I have unplugged most of my peripherals in hopes of finding a cure, but it hasn't happened yet. I've tried a different mouse (both optical.) I've tried different USB ports. The problem only started a couple of months ago...I don't know if it started after an update or something.

I have a problem with my PC (vista). It just freezes randomly while I am working on it. It also freezes during the Antivirus scanning (avast), windows defender scanning and windows update. I cannot do anything except turn it of manually (ON/OFF). It also freezes when I insert a usb drive, and recently is making strange sounds (beebs, toot) as some creatures are living inside it. (It also freezes in safe mood). Moreover, a blue screen appeared morethan once and I don't know if the problem is due to a virus or an error in the system.

I have a Toshiba satellite A135-S2346. It's always worked fine. One day it when I plugged my ipod charger into it, it froze. Now the laptop wont start at all it has a 1 in 3 chance of starting, if it does. It freezes at the Toshiba logo, and makes a static, popping noise from the speakers. Anything I can do? Or began to figure the issue out?

I have a brand new PC, with quad core Intel 3.2Ghz chip, 4 GB nVidia DDR3 Ram, twin Raid 300GB HD and a 500Gb HD. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. I have a linksys n-Wireless PCI card, and a 1 Gb nVidia GeForce 9800 Ultra.
The problem is that for no reason my computer has started freezing. Once during boot up. Several times whilst in Windows (with no programs running). Other times when running programs. The Freeze requires a reboot. All the device drivers are up to date and I have Vista SP1. I have also checked that all cards are correctly seated, and all cables properly pushed home.

Whenever i am not running a program that takes up face time on my dell inspiron 531, my desktop has a sort of laggy/chunkyness to it, but not so extreme that it makes using the desktop impossible. But, if i run music through winamp, or sometimes firefox will stop it, or in the newest case, turning on Aero, it stops. I have had this problems for as long as i can remember, possibly appeared around december or november. Got my comp in
august, i think.
I have run check disc, defragged every day(especially after moving files), searched all over google, updated all drivers, updated vista, bought a new power supply, am going to add another gig of ram(have 2), run memtest86, regularly use the following: (Ccleaner, spybot search and destroy, ad-aware free, a-squared free, AVG free, windows defender, regsupreme pro, registryboost 2), i have eliminated every service and startup program in
nearly every fashion possible, and can verify every single bit of hardware is running perfectly, leading me to believe it is rooted in software, likely a microsoft error.

After a fresh installation of Vista Home Premium, my pc freezes randomly. If i decide to wait it out it magically unfreezes but this is a constant habit. It leaves the pc clock frozen at the time of the freeze. Suprisingly it lets me play full screen games but nothing else. Reinstalled multiple times, downloaded all updates with no change. Perhaps my motherboard isnt compatible? or my graphics card is just dumb?

So I was trying to watch "Heartbreak Ridge" in avi format and it will run fine for a bit but then all of a sudden vista locks up so tight that I can't even do a ctrl + alt + Del. I have to manually reboot the pc for it to work, and then when I try to play a movie again it will just freeze. I have noticed it is not limited to movies as I have seen it happen when it goes to screensaver, you will see half of the image being drawn and then it freezes. My System Temp atm is 42C, I will list my spec below so you can see what i'm working with.

In late February of 2007 I purchased a new computer with Vista Premium x86 preinstalled. The Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD was included with the computer. In late February of 2007 I also purchased the retail Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVDs from OfficeMax and did a clean x86 install from boot using the retail DVD.
I would like to uninstall my Vista Ultimate and reinstall it with SP1 already integrated within the OS. I always like to install an OS with the service pack already included within the install as opposed to downloading and installing the service pack into an existing installed OS. Personally, I feel this is always the best way to go although many people think otherwise. Is there a way for me to do this using the Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD? It has never been used before. Are the different versions of Vista actually on the Anytime Upgrade DVD or does the DVD "phone home" for the correct OS once the license key is provided? I've never had a need to use the Anytime Upgrade DVD so I am ignorant as to how it works. If I am indeed able to install Vista Ultimate SP1 by using the Anytime Upgrade DVD could I do it upon the release of SP1 on 03/18/2008 or would I have to wait until mid-April when it is released for automatic updates?.........

The new Service Pack 1 version of Windows Vista allows end users to purchase the "upgrade edition" and install it on any PC - with no need to purchase the more expensive "full edition."
The same behavior was present when Vista was originally released, but the fact that the trick wasn't removed from SP1 suggests that Microsoft executives approved the back door as a way to make the price of Vista more appealing to sophisticated buyers.
Previous Windows version not needed for upgrade
Just after Vista was first released to consumers on Jan. 30, 2007, an article in the Windows Secrets Newsletter explained that the upgrade edition of the operating system could be installed on a "clean" hard drive. For whatever reason, Vista had been programmed to accept itself as a "qualifying product." This eliminated any need for users to purchase the full edition of Vista or to upgrade Vista only over an older instance of Windows.

When I try to open any of the games included with my Vista x64 premium, I get the error message: "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel". When I check the associations, it tells me the games are associated to their respective exe files. Am I missing something here? Is this secret Vista business?

I am ordering a new computer (Vista Home Premium 64 bit) that offers an Internet.
Security Suite from Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro in the purchase price.I am seeking recommendations on which of the three to get.
I am open to advice ranging from one of them being superior, to they all are inferior, to which one sucks the least, or even the one easiest to remove without hosing the system before installing a different suite.
I also have available Kaspersky 7.0 (which I know will update when installed) with one more available computer on its license. It is running fine on two Vista Home Premium 32 bit systems.

Am trying to turn OFF Win firewall, yet it's nowhere to be found. (Yes, it is on and running) except for a shortcut link which also does not show up (C:ProgramDataMicrosofWindowsStartMenuPrograms). No folder (hidden included) exists for it anywhere and it has no icon in the control panel either.
Any link found with: "Open Windows Firewall", meets with stoic non-compliance. After some digging I came up with the following error message: " MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly. Name: Windows Firewall with Advanced Security CLSID: FX:{b0556ac-fe9c-4368-be02-7a4cbb7cbe11} "

My "size" option appears to have gone missing, and I'm not sure why. I searched with google, as well as these forums, though I could find no answer to my problem. (Though that doesn't mean one hasn't been posted; my searching skills may just be crappy.) Regardless, has anyone had this, or a similar issue, occur? Or does anyone know how to add your own "details" to choose from so I can get it back manually? I saw this: Folder Size for Windows Explorer. I probably need something along those lines, but for the size option instead... Also, if I'm somehow just staring at the list and missing it even after scanning through each item, (Picture included to rule out/verify idiocy on my part.)

I've an Asus f5sl laptop with Vista Home Premium (32bit) but it's been freezing on me lately. When I boot up, it gets to the black screen with the green bar but after a few seconds, the green bar freezes and I can't log in. Occasionally it boots up after around half an hour but then Vista periodically freezes for a few seconds before resuming (which is annoying when trying to write out something etc)
I don't see any problems in Safe Mode so is possibly a driver? I've updated all my drivers, completely updated using WIndows Update, ran antispyware, used System Restore etc. Only problem is; I've moved to a new country, and like a fool, I left my Vista start up disk back home. Which I would otherwise have tried.

My computer has started shutting off randomly within 5 mins of startup. By shutting off, I mean it just turns off...no BSOD, no errors, just turns off...at random intervals that are usually within five mins. I updated my display drivers a few days ago, and they're currently at the highest version, but it's been a few days, and this just started this morning. It seems to be fine in safe mode (which I'm in now to post this)...which leads me to think it is, in fact, display drivers...but they're up to date, I have no solution there...now what?

I have a computer running Vista Ultimate w/ all the latest updates (including SP1) and latest drivers/bios from the manufacturer and my computer looks like it is rebooting randomly in the middle of the night. I noticed I leave it on all the time and my apps are closed. When I look in the event log, it says: The previous system shutdown at 4:02:19 AM on 5/13/2008 was unexpected. I also checked if there are any memory dumps and there aren't any. I'm stumpted why this is happening if this is due to a hardware failure or a software/driver crash related issue.

It keeps knocking of at random times every few minutes. I have tried everything I know to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. He can connect to his neighbours internet and it stays connected but when he connects to his own it goes offline after a few mins.

I was sitting there and my computer just shut off randomly. I got a message saying something like windows needs to be repaired or something so I clicked the button to repair it. I go downstairs and watch a movie, and then I come back up and I see a black screen with the mouse pointer doing the loading animation. So I leave it for about 2 more hours and still nothing happens, I turn it off manually.
Now I have to create a new user account, but I cant because it shuts off after about 1 or 2 minutes of running. I finally got that done and when I click on my user account to start up it shuts off after about 30 seconds on the desktop. The only way it will run is if it is in safe mode. I am even on it now writing this message. It runs great in safe mode... what do I do? I don't have a Vista disk anymore...

My Vista x64 PC is randomly powering off. MSI Neo4 Diamond MB, AMD athlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU, 2G ddr2-800 ram, 1TB and 500GB SATA drives, ATI Radeon HD4350 video card. started a couple months ago. either you get into Vista and are working and suddenly pow... it goes off like pulling the power cord. sometimes it will do it right before the screen gives you the login to Vista..Thought it was a power issue and upgraded a 500W supply to a 750W modular unit. No change... have completely disassembled the unit, cleaned everything, cleaned the CPU/heatsink and put new Arctic silver in.
I can sit in bios all day watching the hardware monitor and the CPU never get's over about 30-31 Degrees C. Voltages are good and steady. as soon as it's booted to Vista, it starts... even sitting idle it will do it. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 RC on the 500G drive. if I boot to either of those OS's, it will run for days without ANY issues... it is ONLY vista that has the issue. I thought it may have been the drive, so I made an image and restored it to the 500GB drive, then removed the 1TB drive from the system... Same issues.

I have Vista Business x64 SP1. I'm having a problem where programs will suddenly be gone from my system. I used to think this only happened when booting up, but I have noticed that the programs can disappear even when Vista's been running for a while. Here are some of the programs that disappear: SQL Server Management Studio, Java, Logitech SetPoint x64, Firefox, SQLNCLI, Lexmark printer drivers, Visual SVN (A Visual Studio 2008 plugin). The weird thing is, not all of the program's files will be gone. For instance, the folders will still be there and some of the files will be too, but some of the files necessary for the program to run will be gone.
Some times, but not all, when I boot my computer the ethernet port will not work. If I plug the cable into my other ethernet port, I will get internet, but not through the first one. If I reboot the system, I'll get a connection through the port. If I try to Disable and re-enable the port, windows will run up one of the processors and the system will be unresponsive for a while. After 5-10 minutes, it will finish, but it is then not possible to re-enable the port. I've had a problem with SetPoint disappearing before SP1, but only noticed the other programs disappearing recently.
