Upgrade Hack Included In SP1

The new Service Pack 1 version of Windows Vista allows end users to purchase the "upgrade edition" and install it on any PC - with no need to purchase the more expensive "full edition."
The same behavior was present when Vista was originally released, but the fact that the trick wasn't removed from SP1 suggests that Microsoft executives approved the back door as a way to make the price of Vista more appealing to sophisticated buyers.
Previous Windows version not needed for upgrade
Just after Vista was first released to consumers on Jan. 30, 2007, an article in the Windows Secrets Newsletter explained that the upgrade edition of the operating system could be installed on a "clean" hard drive. For whatever reason, Vista had been programmed to accept itself as a "qualifying product." This eliminated any need for users to purchase the full edition of Vista or to upgrade Vista only over an older instance of Windows.

Vista Home Basic 32Bit Recently I downloaded a visual style Black by ~dimage on deviantART which I later removed as I didn't quite like it. The one thing I liked about the visual style is it had smaller taskbar button height. I have reverted back to the vista default visual style but wanted to know if its possible to reduce the button height using some advanced appearane setting or registry hack. I googled a lot and found this Change taskbar program button size which allows to change the button width not height. I have a screenshot of the buttons here, the left one is vista default visual style and the right with the custom visual style.

In late February of 2007 I purchased a new computer with Vista Premium x86 preinstalled. The Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD was included with the computer. In late February of 2007 I also purchased the retail Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVDs from OfficeMax and did a clean x86 install from boot using the retail DVD.
I would like to uninstall my Vista Ultimate and reinstall it with SP1 already integrated within the OS. I always like to install an OS with the service pack already included within the install as opposed to downloading and installing the service pack into an existing installed OS. Personally, I feel this is always the best way to go although many people think otherwise. Is there a way for me to do this using the Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD? It has never been used before. Are the different versions of Vista actually on the Anytime Upgrade DVD or does the DVD "phone home" for the correct OS once the license key is provided? I've never had a need to use the Anytime Upgrade DVD so I am ignorant as to how it works. If I am indeed able to install Vista Ultimate SP1 by using the Anytime Upgrade DVD could I do it upon the release of SP1 on 03/18/2008 or would I have to wait until mid-April when it is released for automatic updates?.........

I'm having a problem with my system. It randomly freezes, I have no idea why and most times its when I'm doing something differently. Its freezed during 2 different games, during a burning of a cd, and even while trying to get into the favorites menu on internet exlorer.. I tried looking in the event viewer for the system but not sure what I need to look for. I have no viruses according to Nod32. I have Vista Ultimate running on amd 3700, 1 gb ram, 75gb hard drive, geforce 8800 gts graphics card, ecs motherboard and a dvd burner. Here is a HiJackThis log................

When I try to open any of the games included with my Vista x64 premium, I get the error message: "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel". When I check the associations, it tells me the games are associated to their respective exe files. Am I missing something here? Is this secret Vista business?

I have just bought a new pc with vista home edition premium, included in the package were 2 dvds with blank recovery dvd written on them ,on inquireing I was told that I would have to make my own recovery dvds and that instructions on how to do it would be found on my pc I then found out that windows complete pc backup and restore is not included with vista home premium Can anyone tell me how I can reinstall vista should I ever need to without some sort of recovery disk,as one wasn't included in the package

I am ordering a new computer (Vista Home Premium 64 bit) that offers an Internet.
Security Suite from Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro in the purchase price.I am seeking recommendations on which of the three to get.
I am open to advice ranging from one of them being superior, to they all are inferior, to which one sucks the least, or even the one easiest to remove without hosing the system before installing a different suite.
I also have available Kaspersky 7.0 (which I know will update when installed) with one more available computer on its license. It is running fine on two Vista Home Premium 32 bit systems.

Am trying to turn OFF Win firewall, yet it's nowhere to be found. (Yes, it is on and running) except for a shortcut link which also does not show up (C:ProgramDataMicrosofWindowsStartMenuPrograms). No folder (hidden included) exists for it anywhere and it has no icon in the control panel either.
Any link found with: "Open Windows Firewall", meets with stoic non-compliance. After some digging I came up with the following error message: " MMC could not create the snap-in. My "size" option appears to have gone missing, and I'm not sure why. I searched with google, as well as these forums, though I could find no answer to my problem. (Though that doesn't mean one hasn't been posted; my searching skills may just be crappy.) Regardless, has anyone had this, or a similar issue, occur? Or does anyone know how to add your own "details" to choose from so I can get it back manually? I saw this: Folder Size for Windows Explorer. I probably need something along those lines, but for the size option instead... Also, if I'm somehow just staring at the list and missing it even after scanning through each item, (Picture included to rule out/verify idiocy on my part.)

I have a Aspire AM5620-E5301A Acer computer. On Acer it has Windows Vista Premium Home. I bought Windows Ultimate software to put on my Acer computer. It starts to load up OK, put in the key number in than next step is. To pick custom install or upgrade install, but upgrade choice is grey out. It is disable from using the upgrade choice, I want to choose to pick. I did not purchase Windows Ultimate through Acer anytime upgrade option. It was a store bought software it was cheaper than Acer price they offer. What is the problem with installing Ultimate with Acer computer?

I have a laptop with 64-bit Home Premium. The warranty expires in June. I want to upgrade to Ultimate. I haven't checked out the Anytime Upgrade yet. Will I be able to get the 64-bit upgrade to Ultimate or is a 32-bit upgrade to Ultimate the only upgrade path?

I have XP Pro, its quite good a little slow here and there despite the high end output of my computer( 2.6ghz core 2 duo E6600, 2GB Ram 2x 250gb HDD 512 pci-e card more fans than you can count ) I get along fine, apart from a sata issue i have been fighting with ASUS, but thats nothing really. but is it worth upgrading to Vista, one thing i noticed is that it takes 40GB on install thats a large jump from XP, i guess ill have to get a bigger main drive? 500gb or something. Also my G/card is directx 9 do i have to get 10?? or will vista work with the 9 card (ATI x1950xtx pro 512mb MSI Build) i run the full adobe suite cs3, word 2007, a few other industry video and imaging programes, divx and a load of games (mainly titles within the last 5/6 years)

I have 2 problems which may or may not be Vista-related:
Free AVG users have to upgrade to Ver. 8. I have tried twice yesterday.
1st time received 17.4MB
2nd time received 23.8MB
Same message for both: Some of the files are corrupted. Please download a
new copy. What is going on. Must I first remove the existing Ver. 7.5?

I am looking for a new PC for my wife and in order to get the most bang for the buck there seem to be an abundance of vista PCs out there that can be upgraded to windows 7. Unfortunately is seems that her 2 most expensive programs, Painter 9.5 and Photo shop CS2 won't run on a 64 bit O.S., or at least not without a lot of trouble. All of the PCs that I am looking at have 64 bit vista installed. My question is can I buy one of these and when I get my free upgrade disk for windows 7 can I install win 7 32 bit? I don't mind doing a clean install.

I tried to use my Vista Ultimate and bypassed the numbers and it would not let me into the OS, says I have to have an OS to upgrade. Microsoft techies said yes I have to install Win2000 then XP upgrade then Vista. Now I have to wipe my partition clean using a third party software and install 3 OS's, does that suck or what.

Can I do a upgrade from a XP 32bit Machine to Windows Vista 64bit by just adding the disk, hitting intall and all that, or do I need to do a clean install when changing to 64bit.
Also, if it's just your average HP machine with a AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ with 2GB ram and a 200GB HD.. is 64bit even really needed, or should I just do 32bit. As I'm installing vista and then selling the machine to someone locally.

With the release of Windows Vista comes a surprising change to the way the upgrade version works.
Unlike previous version of Windows, you can no longer wipe out your existing Windows installation and install a fresh install of Vista with the upgrade DVD. Instead, your upgrade version on top of the previous version of Windows you have.
This change will help cut down on the number of people buying the wrong version of Windows Vista but creates a huge annoyance for any power user that wants to start fresh with a new Windows operating system. Users that already wiped their previous Windows installation with the Windows Vista install disk while installing the upgrade version are in for a surprise when they try to active Windows. It won’t activate! Why? Windows is looking for a full version product key because the user did not install the upgrade version of Windows Vista from within a previous version of Windows.
Users that want to perform a fresh Windows Vista install the traditional method are not going to be able to active their upgrade copy. If you still want to do a clean install with Windows Vista so that your XP settings and junk does not get ported over, there is a new method that will allow you to do a clean install and activate your upgrade version.
Fresh Windows install with the upgrade version of Windows Vista
Use your Windows Vista DVD to wipe out your previous Windows installation and install Vista without a product key as shown here.
After you have Vista installed, use your Windows Vista DVD again and perform an upgrade using your upgrade product key. Yes, upgrading Windows Vista to Vista works.
Your upgrade key will now activate Windows and you will have a clean install of Windows Vista.
