I assume this Newsgroup mirrors one of the MS support forums? If so,
can anyone point me to the relevant one? There doesn't seem to be a
1-1 correspondence between the newsgroup hirarchy and hte forums I can
see at http://www.microsoft.com/communities/forums/default.mspx

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two laptops and a desktop. The desktop is running Windows XP and the two laptops are running Vista. I have all three on the same network and there is no problem there. I recently had my laptop at a local school and connected to the network there (not sure it is relevant, but I thought I would throw that in there). After I got home, I have been unable to re-connect to my network drives. I tried to remap them, but the other computer, drives, etc, aren't showing up in the My Computer or the Network area, or when I try to map them.
My wife's laptop is having no problems. The drives still show up on hers without a problem and nothing has changed on her computer. So, I know it is the laptop with Vista that is the problem (don't want anyone telling me to download the patch for the XP). I am thinking this is a simple stupid little setting glitch that I am over looking, but I am at my wits end. If memory serves me, it did this before when I had the computer at the same school and I don't remember how I fixed it.

I have an Acer laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1 connected via a wireless network to a Desktop PC running Windows XP Professional SP3.
Attached to the Desktop is a Maxtor USB hard disk which is used for backup of the Desktop. I can read/write from the laptop from/to the Maxtor. When I use the Vista Backup and Control Centre on the laptop to establish backup on the Maxtor, I can browse to the folder on the Maxtor, but when I enter a username and password I get the following:
If I use an administrator username on the desktop pc I get:
‘No mapping between account names and security IDs was done (0x80070534). Please ensure that the username is valid’ … (it is!)
If I use a limited username I get :
You need full control permission for the network share. Make the user a co-owner, with Full Control. The network share cannot be on a computer running Windows XP Home. (0x8100002A)’ As I say above, I am using XP Professional SP3 on the Desktop Computer.
We are having trouble adding new groups in Windows Mail. For some reason, it no longer gives us the option of choosing to add a group instead of a single contact. I've clicked on "File" then "New" but "Contact Group" or "Group" is not an option, nor is there a group button on the toolbar. Is there a problem with our settings? We used to be able to add them and now we can't unless we copy an existing group.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy interest in Vista Speech is limited to finding out why I am having trouble getting _consistent_ speed/accuracy out of it. By accuracy I mean at least 98%, preferably 99%. By speed I mean at least 80 wpm. (plain everyday words, not technical words)
I normally speak at 160 wpm, so if I speak for two minutes, 320 words get changed to text. Of the 320 words, I expect 3 words to need correction, which takes another two minutes for me to do. 320 / 4 = 80 wpm on average...........
Could one of the MVPs send the server and groupnames for the defender application.
I would really like to install my own anti-spyware application to replace defender, but security center does not have the option available to switch monitoring to the
other application, Ad-aware pro, at this time.
It would be easier for users of Vista to refer to discussions on specific topics if all the Forums are listed as Microdsoft Newsgroups. Taking into account the fact that there are already some Newsgroups for Vista, it becomes a duplicate effort to collate all the comments on a given Vista topic from the Forums and the newsgroups. The Forums also make life miserable by giving the time of posting a message as "so many hours or days or weeks in history". The Newsgroup method of giving the exact date and time when the message was posted makes it easy to search for a message. I also find that the Search function works far more efficiently in Newsgroups as compared with the Forums. The forum search draws a blank most of the times, whereas Newsgroup Search is successful most of the times. So why not add all the forums to the Newsgroups with the standard prefix of microsoft.vista? Besides, Outlook Express is far better organized for viewing discussions as conversations than the Forum organization.

I suspect it's due to no moderation on Usenet and because Google is the search engine of choice for Windows problems, even searching through Google's groups.
