I am having a problem /annoyance with Folder redirection Vista. It is working great in my mixed environment except for on the Vista clients. The folder do not combine and therefore there is a local documents folder and a redirected documents folder. I can not have this confusion for my users.
View 5 RepliesIn XP the backup feature was very extensive, highly configurable and trustworthy. It was the only OS in each I had to do disaster recovery and I can prove from experience that it works (Windows Server versions use the same). You could schedule several types of backup (Normal, Differential, incremental, etc) and could get NT backup to compress the catalogue, which if you have lots of highly compressible documents (DOCs, etc) can reduce the size of the catalogue quite considerably.
Yesterday I asked Vista to do a full backup on the new HD. It only gave me 1 option, which was to choose the destination (the new HD). I did not find options for scheduling, types of backup and compression. This morning after the backup has finished the backup folder that Vista created was 138 MB.
Now please tell me, how come Vista creates a 138 MB backup folder if I now only have 110 GB of data in the disk? Where did it get the extra 28 GB from? If you are going to justify saying I now need to buy a backup application, don't bother. It was there in XP and it worked. It would have cost MS absolutely nothing to leave it there. I don't even trust the backup that Vista did, so I am left with the feeling that I ended up wasting 138 GB of space for nothing.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAs you can see, there are two "Pictures" folders, and two "Music" folders. They do not contain the same contents; only one Pictures folder contains all my pictures and only one Music folder contains all my music. The "new" Music folder contains the "Sample Music" folder, and the "new Pictures folder contains all of what is in my original Pictures folder, in addition to same strange things which are shown in screen shot 2. These folders are not deletable, and probably related to the ntuser.dat.LOG2 file you can see at the bottom of the user folder. I think this is probably the cause of something going wrong in the registry, which I haven't a clue of how to edit.
Upon opening the new Pictures folder, this is shown (unrelated folders/files are blurred):
For some reason, the same default Music folder as well as an entirely new (third) Pictures folder is also present here.
If I open the third Pictures folder here, this is shown:
The new Music folders in all cases (except for the original in my user folder) only contain the default Sample Music folder, so I didn't post a screen shot of that.
Deleting any of these unneeded folders is impossible, as Vista will either prevent me from doing so or just creating a new one immediately after it is deleted.
I have two user accounts, one is an administrator. I don't want the standard account to be able to view the data in my account. I tried to "un-share folders but I keep getting this error message 'You could not stop sharing the selected folder.' Further info says that this folder is in a shared folder, huh? It shouldn't be.
View 9 Replies View RelatedBeen using Vista (Ultimate, 64bit, SP1) for about three months now (only because I wanted to get acclimated to Windows' new look and feel for the eventual switch to Win7), and one of the first things I noticed was that a) it kept forgetting my folder views and b) it kept sticking my new files at the top of folders instead of the bottom. I just figured it was a "feature" and I looked around the net for a way to work around it, but never found one. I just tried to live with it until the other day a friend directed me to the tutorial Brink posted to make Vista remember (I don't even know how I missed it; I'm usually pretty proud of my Google Fu), and it made me incredibly happy. So I thought "Hey, there might be a fix of some sort for my other problem." The problem is, I can't remember the search query I used to get info for problem (b) the first time around and I couldn't get any decent results with the ones I was trying. So I decided for the direct approach and ask here.
So here's exactly what my problem is. Whenever I drop a file into a folder, or save a new file, Vista is always sticking it at the top of the folder. And not even as the first file, usually as the second. Now, if I happen to have that folder open when I save the file, sometimes it will put it at the bottom, sometimes not. I never had this problem with XP, and its pretty annoying since that's how I process and sort my files. Is there something I can do about this?
Emails are sent and arrive in my Windows Mailbox fine. I then create a folder and drag them to that folder no problems. When I create a subfolder however, and start dragging emails into the subfolder I find that the 1st email is fine but every subsequent one has been corrupted. That is to say that in each case the email content is erased and replaced with a duplication of the 1st email in that subfolder. Go figure. The email titles don't change so if you open the subfolder you
wouldn't realise what has happened.
It is only when you open each successive email that it becomes apparent that the content of every email has become identical. *Windows Mail folders: 1 email duplicates itself over all others in a folder, thereby erasing email content of all others* This was previously posted by two others and I have exactly the same problem.
I have what appears to be an odd issue, and I can't find reference to it on the web anywhere. Under the Public folder on my Vista machine, I can see the folders Public Downloads, Public Music etc. BUT Public Documents is missing.
If I use the cmd shell, I get the same effect:

HOWEVER the documents folder does exist. I can CD into it and see my files. From within explorer, I can enter C:UsersPublicDocuments explicitly and get to the folder, but is does not show up under C:usersPublic.....
I just configured Vista's Windows mail to hook up with my gmail account via IMAP. I have my emails stored in a folder structure (gmail calls them "labels"), which was recreated and all the emails downloaded. So far, so good. But then WinMail downloaded all 1700 emails again in the All Mail folder. I bought a small SDD drive for my new machine and do not want all the emails stored locally twice. How do I configure WinMail to synchronize my folders, but not the All Mail folder, and then I can delete the All Mail folder? Or are there any other options I can use?

In the program files, Activision, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Directly after the install I downloaded Patch 1.6 and 1.6-1.7 After that I went to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare folder so that I could add my custom maps. But the folders I am looking for are missing. The folders located in my CoD4 MW folder are: Docs, Main, Miles, Mods, pb, Zone. Then there are 2 folders missing: players and usermaps. My game runs fine, but I cant do anything more... I have all my ranks, but I cant find my players folder. I did a search throughout my pc, for the names of those folders but couldnt find anything... I reinstalled CoD4 twice...

I hope some one from Microsoft see this and they reconsider putting a update to re add this feature. I just got this computer and already I want to send it back. I really need folders to keep my contacts sorted. Either add the option or let me download the old Outlook to install. And buying Office outlook is not a option.

I have had these accounts for 5 years. I bought this computer 2 years ago. No changes have been made and all the sudden I am receiving each email 2x's in the inbox and junk mail folders. It is not just from a few people, and not them sending twice. IT is from EVERYONE for the last few weeks. I have 2 emails accounts. I can't open Word *.doc files by double-clicking on them, either on the desktop or when they are attachments in emails (the most common way I get them.) All I get is an error saying the file I'm trying to open is "not a valid Win32 application." When I right-click the .doc file icon and go to "Open With" there is an option that reads "Microsoft Office 2007 component" and it has the Office 2007 Word icon next to it. I again get the "not a valid Win32 application." I can open one of these documents when I have Word already running and just Open File, but its just annoying and time consuming over and over again.

Stuff i found out:
Doesnt happen when i start the computer (and while startup programs are loading)
Doesnt happen in Safe Mode
Doesnt happen always... but happens more than 95% times....
Microsoft Office Document Imaging is running perfectly with one exception! I cannot open .mdi files by double clicking them. Although if I open the Office Tool first, then I can quite happily do a File Open sequence and use the .mdi file normally. The .mdi file extension refuses to allow itself to be associated with mspview.exe (the correct executable file) even when I try to do it via Default Progams using the built-in administrator account. No helpful error message just no response (I AM able to associate .mdi with other (incorrect) exe files so it seems to be mspview.exe that Vista has taken a dislike to for some reason. It was working ok until I uninstalled MS Office 2003.
I DID have both Office 2003 & 2007 installed but the older version was redundant. I see no reason why Vista should block this file association unless I have a Registry issue potentially? (And yes I have done several restarts) I can of course do a System Restore (hopefully) but I wondered if anyone had any ideas why I'm having problems? Alternatively, I can re-install Office 2007 completely but that seems to be a bit of a sledgehammer approach.
The subject says "on desktop" only because I haven't looked for signs of this problem elsewhere yet. The problem seems to manifest itself in different ways. I'll describe the most obvious way, and if there's no response, I'll try to describe other symptoms as best I can; although the more I experiment, the more it's starting to look as though I'm zeroing in on something -- I know not what.
After a Restart, a single-click on one of my desktop icons will highlight that icon, but it will also highlight the bottom-rightmost (BR) icon. This was discovered because the typical double-click was causing execution of the BR icon, and not the selected one. If I moved the BR icon up higher on the desktop and tried again, the new BR icon would behave the same way. This happens regardless of which icon I select. It seems that the problem goes away as soon as I successfully call a program and I leave the desktop. The problem returns after a restart.
1. Do you have Print Preview that allows you to select which pages are printed and cancel the pages you do not want printed?
2. Do you have the ability to select double sided printing -- print all the odd pages and then print all the even pages?
3. Select the print quality, no matter what is selected in the Control Panel?
I have a Epson CX6400 and had the features listed above with Windows XP, but lost them with Vista, so I'm thinking about buying a new CX8400, because Epson is not going to write code for a new Print Preferences Window for my CX6400.
