I have added D:Music to the index locations in Indexing Options. It is displaying the message Indexing Complete however when i search for files that I know exist in this folder it doesn't find them. Most of the files are MP3s and I have checked that they are included in the types of files to be indexed.
View 6 RepliesMe and lwbh have been trying to solve a problem where 2 of the options down the bottom of the Picture Position selection menu are missing.We understand that vista ultimate has all 5,but Home Premium only has 3.We were wondering if anyone knows how to enable those extra buttons under vista Home Premium(see the examples if you don't know what I mean).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI face a weird issue with my Vista Enterprise edition. Sometime back suddenly one day all the autorun settings disappeared from my system. When I checked the autorun defaults setting from the control panel I see that that dropdowns have gone blank completely. All the default options like "Open folder..", "Take no action", "Ask me everytime", etc. are simply wiped off... No more there! Later when I installed some software like picasa, winamp, etc. these programs got added to the options list in the autorun defaults, but the above default options are still missing.
Now the autorun works in my system, and automatically launches the applications like picasa or winamp for appropriate disks, but I can't set/select the options like "Take no action" or "Ask me everytime" how I can add those default options back again?
I am thinking of rebuilding the search index. I have noticed that the search
function does not find files I know are there. I think I know how to do it, and I gather it will take a long time.
My spyware - Werbroot - is not working. When computer starts i see message about definition file missing and to go to options page to locate

View 7 Replies View RelatedIm new to vista and have looked over this forum but cant seem to find an answer to my issue...which is: I open "Computer" then press on "Searches" (on the left) and then open "Everywhere" which returns 5,000 results...PLEASE how do i clear this list. I have rebuilt the index after removing ALL folders etc to index...now displays ZERO indexed items.
I have then turned indexing off completely on all drives (right click/properties/untick indexing option and select ALL files and subfolders)...and via admin tools/services/windows search (disabled after stopping service) I have rebooted and still thousands of results come up under: Searches/Everywhere Its driving me nuts
when i start my pc i get a message saying the following windows system 32..dll files are missing ,windows system 32 wrkoankp.dll windows system 32 ofnqlmfh.dll. i may have deleted them using spybot as i've been having spyware problems with internet explorer,can anyone tell me where to download them from or how to get vista to repair this problem

All Ok except for the E:Videos folder, which did not appear in the recycle bin ! It's not a disaster, as I have the folder backed up, but I'm puzzled ?

Where can get the correct files/ a good recovery disk/ a bootable virus cd (tried bit defender - didn't work). I've read soooo many pages about this and nothing works. Startup repair - doesn't work; complete system recovery - doesn't work; formatting during the vista installation - doesn't work.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile dealing with tech support from a peripherals company regarding a mouse problem, they had me check for certain system files, and we determined that several appeared to missing, including input.inf, msmouse.inf, and hidusd.sys. Someone suggested I use System File Checker (sfc / scannow), but this did not restore the files, and give error messages telling me that there were corrupted files but they could not be repaired. what might have happened to these files (and any others that might also be missing) and more importantly, how can I get them back.

I ran MBAM and superantispyware to remove lots of trojans and spywares and then i ran a boot scan from avast and it removed lots of infected system files like msconfig, cmd.exe, notepad, taskmgr.exe, etc. Now the scan is complete and there's no virus left on the computer. But now when i type cmd.exe in RUN, i get an error saying that Windows cannot find RUN & so on. Is there a way to get those missing system files?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe recently had a need to replace a hard disk. Our original files were all backed up with Windows Vista Backup. The backup process produced no errors and appeared to complete successfully. However, when we restored the backup to the new hard drive, we found that there were many missing files. To this point, it appears that the missing files are all .EXE files. In many cases, all the files were restored to a folder, except for the executable (.exe). We know that these files existed when the Windows Vista Backup was performed on the original hard disk. Moreover, we backuped the same files later using a different program and have confirmed the files were there.
Is anyone aware of a problem where Windows Vista Backup is either NOT backing up all the files or is NOT restoring all the files? Furthermore, it is odd that this seems to have affected only certain files which brings us to wonder if our security software could have blocked files somehow without our knowledge
I recently rebuilt my machine (see system specs) and when I went to pop in my old HDD as a secondary drive to pull some files from it, Windows decided it needed to run chkdsk on it. I tried to stop it, as this is a 500GB drive so I knew it would take forever, but I couldn't stop it. So after a few hours, it finished and let me in, but now all of the files are missing. This was my old C: (primary) drive, so it should have Windows, Users, Program Data, etc folders but it doesn't. it just has a few empty folders (Nvidia, Intel...) However when you check the properties of the disk, it shows that several GB's are used, so I know my data is around there somewhere. Changing the folder options to view hidden does not help. The OS on this disk was Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

View 8 Replies View Relatedthis is driving me crazy! I have now experienced this 3-4 times. It happens all of a sudden, and is scary. Some or most of my data suddenly disappears from my user folder (C:/users/username). First time it happened immediately after I installed Spyware Doctor, back in April, when they first released the x64 version. I have since restored all the data, and uninstalled Spyware Doctor. However, it happened again. The last two times, it just happened. I simply noticed that I had much more free space on my C drive (40GB more than the day before).
Last weekend, it mostly affected my photos, but other folders were missing also. I am running x64, on a HP machine with 6GB RAM. Luckaly, I perform multiple backups (TrueImage and Ghost), as well as Mozy. In each case I was able to restore all data, but it takes time, and more importantly, I don't trust my computer. I live in a fear - will my data be there tomorrow??? Or, has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I was adding some files from my laptop to my desktop today, and after I was finished, all of my files disappeared. All the files in the folder I was adding things to, and the parent folder that held that folder, along with all the files in the parent folder. All the disk space is still taken up though, so they must still exist SOMEWHERE. I tried a system restore, and it got some of the files back, but not many of them. I'd say about 20 out of a couple hundred. I also tried this program called Disk Healer, and it said that the folders did not exist anymore.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit with Service Pack 1 and all other updates (as far as I can tell). that is, my Avast! Anti-Virus has classified my kernel32.dll and wsock32.dll files as trojans and locked them in the vault. I approved the transfer a long time ago and only recently realized my mistake. When I attempted to restore the files, however, Avast! says that it was able to complete the action "with errors" (the error being that it couldn't move the files).
However, in addition, I think I am missing other .DLL files, such as the Wireless Extensibility Module. I've already tried re-installing the WLAN driver, updating the driver, using alternate Wireless management software, and doing a system restore. Yet the problem persists. I've even tried doing a complete system restore from boot-up, but it says that none exist.
Another problem is that various other .exe files in the /System32 folder won't execute (I am assuming this is because they are missing associated .DLLs). I have all important documents backed up, so it wouldn't be a problem to a total system restore, but, like I said, I can't.
I am playing CoD4 and I am experiencing some problems with mods and files... When I installed CoD4 I let it install as default. In the program files, Activision, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Directly after the install I downloaded Patch 1.6 and 1.6-1.7 After that I went to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare folder so that I could add my custom maps. But the folders I am looking for are missing. The folders located in my CoD4 MW folder are: Docs, Main, Miles, Mods, pb, Zone. Then there are 2 folders missing: players and usermaps. My game runs fine, but I cant do anything more... I have all my ranks, but I cant find my players folder. I did a search throughout my pc, for the names of those folders but couldnt find anything... I reinstalled CoD4 twice...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software,unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security). These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission.
My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this:Use Internet Explorer, Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation),Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. I'd be happy just to be able to get FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.
This morning my computer started issuing security alerts notifying me that the firewall was off as was the malware. I turn the firewall on but under the malware section it indicates that it is reporting to the security centre in a format that is no longer supported. It also has a little Not Compatible icon to the right of the malware icon on the left. Once the firewall is turned on and the malware turns from red to yellow when we turn it on the shield in the bottom right of the screen goes yellow for a while but eventually it goes red again and I am again notified that the firewall is off and the malware is off as well.
I know my subscription is still in effect and according to the system it expires 10/03/2010.
My gtx 275 on windows experience index shows as graphics 5.9 and gaming graphics 5.8 WTF ARGGH I just bought this card and before i had a 9800gt which score 5.9 in both whatt? iv refreshed the score twice and i think u guys know which card is better a 9800gt or a gtx 275? Iv got the new beta 195.39 nvidia drivers!

Start/Control panel/ Index Options, gives me a dialogue box that says the index is not running and all the other functions are greyed out. I have had this before and found that I had to reinstall Vista (a fix was expected early 08) I believe it is being caused by my external hard drive being removed and the drive no longer is available to the Index?.
I have tried the "0 in SetupCompletedSuccessfully" fix, and copying the
gathrprm.txt and schema.txt files to the configure Folder.I have a Sony VGN-FZ11z fully updated with Vista Home Premium. I really dont want to reinstall again.
at the moment my base score is 4.8 on ram every thing else is 5.9 my question is that if i add 4gb of ram more as that is what my computer can take will it up my score to more than 4.8
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is a known bug according to several Internet sources. So how can I DISABLE indexing of network shares? I have a network share which has like 200 folder/sub-folders, and everytime I access it, it works for a second or two, then it hangs windows explorer, sometimes hanging my whole PC (explorer.exe)!!!
And I know it is doing this because the root folder only has like 20 sub-folders, all of which I can clearly see listed, but when I do a Wireshark capture (tcpdump), I see all the sub-folders and files being listed, so I know it must be spidering the share and indexing everything. The worst part is, this share is on a NetApp, so there are .hourly and .daily and .weekly and .monthly snapshots of all my data.. In all, it is several dozen gigabyes of files, folders, and sub-folders, all of which Vista is "attempting" to index, but cannot/store. how to turn off indexing? Heck, I'd be happy with NO (not even local) indexing just to avoid this damned problem again and again. No known ETA on a fix from MSFT, from what I can find.. Which is a shame!
when I powered up my Vista I noticed that it was unusually slow and all of a sudden, it froze for no apparent reason. I rebooted [by pressing reset on case as keyboard wouldn't respond] and booted into XP and ran chkdsk on the Vista partition. Sure enough, it found two errors but in the index area. Here's the output of DOS window:

I've been surfing the web for ages and tried many fixes I've been reading, including this one, to address my specific problem. Yours is a GREAT tutorial, by the way. But it does not work for me. My problem is that the Vista search box won't find ANY file under my Documents folder. I have selected "index this folder" under the properties of the folder but it won't work. If I go to control panel the only folder that is included is "Users", but does this mean "c:users" or not? I have no clue! if I try to manually add a folder from this control panel / indexing window I can not navigate to "c:usersmy_user_namedocuments" folder because it does not show up as you can see on this screen capture! what the hell is going on? I am already thinking of reinstalling the whole system but I'd like to know how I went into this situation or else I risk doing the same again.
