Autorun Dropdown Options Missing

Oct 28, 2009

I face a weird issue with my Vista Enterprise edition. Sometime back suddenly one day all the autorun settings disappeared from my system. When I checked the autorun defaults setting from the control panel I see that that dropdowns have gone blank completely. All the default options like "Open folder..", "Take no action", "Ask me everytime", etc. are simply wiped off... No more there! Later when I installed some software like picasa, winamp, etc. these programs got added to the options list in the autorun defaults, but the above default options are still missing.

Now the autorun works in my system, and automatically launches the applications like picasa or winamp for appropriate disks, but I can't set/select the options like "Take no action" or "Ask me everytime" how I can add those default options back again?

IE7 Favorites Dropdown Menu

May 9, 2008

I have reinstalled my OS. Since then, my IE7 Favorites list (the dropdown menu that expands when clicking Favorites on the Menu Bar) opens in full length. The "Enable personalized favorites menu" option in Internet Explorer 7 does not hide my less frequently used favorites as expected any more. Is it a question of time until the list collapses and expands (I mean Vista learns my habits) or is it an issue that can be resolved?

Right/left-expanding & Dropdown Menus Suddenly Open In Random Directions.

Dec 12, 2009

A typical Windows multiple-choice menu, e..g. right/left-expanding or dropdown; for example try right-click on empty desktop area and select View or SortBy, which in turn also leads to other menus. Or in Internet Explorer click View-->Textsize, zoom, etc. Or any other expanding type of menu. Well, upto today it was predictable - next menu subwindow would popup on the right side if there's space between it and display's rightmost edge (or on left if there's more space on the left). But now they all open at random sides, one menu opens on left from the mouse pointer, next opens on right - unpredictable, no logic. There's enough space on the right but menu pops up on the left, and it's like alternating. One menu from the tip opens next menu on right, next menu from top (2nd) opens its submenu on left, despite rhaving enough space on
the right. This you might say is cosmetic. But there're many things we get accustomed in using our tools, including computers, that when behave erratically are not making me happy...

I have kaspersky antivirus 2010. When i scan vulnerabilities it shows:

'Autorun from network drives is allowed'
'Autorun from hard drives is allowed'
'Removeable Media autorun is allowed'
'CD/DVD autorun is allowed'

i fixed it, but when i tried to rollback settings, it didn't work. I know it's unsafe to enable autorun, but what should i do to enable it? I tried to enable autoplay by changing default settings for media or devices, but nothing changed.

Fallout 3 Autorun Never Works

Mar 3, 2009

I have had this problem for a long time, but i'm beginning to get really sick and tired of it.

First and foremost, let me quickly explain the issue:

- Autorun NEVER works
- When i insert a disc or USB device, nothing happens
- When i go to My Computer and double click on the drive, Vista asks me if i want to format the CD/DVD
- Vista thinks that every CD/DVD i insert is blank... This includes mounting an ISO via Daemon tools........

Lost Autorun Windows Explorer Stopped Working

Nov 10, 2009

I bought an HP Pavillion a6750f in May. Its OS is Vista 64bit. This machine ran fine for the first month, then I started having issues. I cannot pinpoint the start of the problems to any one event. I first "lost" autorun. I was trying to install PhotoImpact. The first disk worked fine, but when I put the second one in, I got an error message telling me something about autorun (seems to me it was something else, but I cannot remember what at this time). Any way, if I put any disks in, the computer would not automatically open them, or run them. After a few days of struggling with this, I finally got things working again. But, about a week after that, I began getting the Windows Explorer has stopped working error. That still is not fixed! I am a college student who takes most of my courses online. I needed Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Dreamweaver CS4, so when I tried installing them, I got a bunch of errors, issues, and problems. I uninstalled just about every program I had, and tried installing one at a time to see if any of the programs were causing problems. Vista, as you know, does not support many older programs, which is a PAIN! But, I did find a few "upgrades" for some of my programs so they would work with Vista. Unfortunately, after installing those "upgrades", my computer still did not work properly......

Fifa 2008: "Autorun Program Has Stopped Working"

Dec 11, 2008

I have come across this problem in vista a few times before and every time I just ended up giving up the idea of installing a software. But this time I don't wish to. I have recently got a copy of Fifa 2008 iso. I used virtual clone drive to mount the image. Following this, the iso is getting mounted but autorun crashes.

I get the following error - "Autorun program has stopped working". Because of this I can't even install the game. It's a cracked iso and it works perfectly fine on XP machines. So, I presume that this is a problem with vista only.

Best Backup Options

Mar 23, 2008

I'm in the process of transferring my Hi8 video tapes to my PC for safe keeping. The one drawback I see with the Hi8 tapes is that if the camcorder dies, so does my playback mechanism. To get the highest quality I'm creating AVI files, and each tape is approximately 13 GB of data. I'm capturing in segments around 3.3 GB each. Needless to say, I've filled most my PC drive space, including my 300 GB external USB drive. I'd like to back these files up to DVD as 'raw files' for future editing (as opposed to actually creating a DVD that can be viewed on a DVD player). I have Vista Home Premium, and XP Pro as OS options. I started just dragging the files to the DVD drive on my Vista and had some success, but for some reason it doesn't always work. how best to back these files up? I've looked at a couple backup packages but haven't seen anything that strikes me as what I'm looking for..

System Restore Options

May 4, 2009

First off, when I go to Create a Restore Point, it always takes the system about 20-40 seconds before it gives me what I want which is C drive checked in the list to create a restore point on. It shows me all my USB hard drives and other partitions, none of which I ever want to choose to create a restore point on. Is there a way to choose to have only the C drive come up on this list of possible drives for restore points? (I assume this would be quicker, since it would not have to find all those other drives/partitions before showing me the C drive.)

Secondly, since I only have an 83gig partition for C drive with Vista (64-bit Home Premium) and programs using 43 gigs of that; so how much space do I really need for System Restore points? I know there is a page here on this forum somewhere for going into the system via Command and changing the amount of space allotted for System Restore. Should I leave the Default allotted space or should I change it to a smaller amount? (My computer came shipped with a 700+ gig C drive but I shrank it to 83gigs and the rest is for just archiving, with a special partition for ripping and burning and decoding files.) Third: Where are the System Restore point files or whatever they are stored?

Fourth: Aside from manually creating a Restore Point via System Protection, is there a way I can make it create a Restore Point once a day at a particular time? I think it creates one at startup every day (I'm not sure, but I seem to recall that it does this), but is there a way to tell it, say, to create one every day at 5pm, or something like that in addition to creating one at start up? Or would that require too much disk space alloted to it? (I have a big hard drive, but I'd just as soon not junk it up with an excessive amount of System Restore space.)

Three Options For Upgrading From To Windows 7

Dec 26, 2008

Back in November, I explored the number of editions of Windows 7 that Microsoft was working on. While the company has not officially given a list yet, it was clear that Windows 7 Enterprise Edition and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition were definitely coming. Furthermore, there was an obvious avoidance of naming a Windows 7 Business Edition, though there was a mention of a Windows 7 Small Business Edition. While doing a little more digging, I stumbled on the following upgrade paths for Windows Vista to Windows 7. These are not confirmed, but I am told they are what Microsoft is currently considering: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition => Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Windows Vista Business Edition => Windows 7 Professional Edition Windows Vista Ultimate Edition => Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Full Story: Rumor: three options for upgrading from Vista to Windows 7
