Diagnostic Policy Service Not Working
Mar 23, 2008I have the Diagnostic Policy Service (DPS) set to automatically start, but it never shows that it's running. When I try to start it manually, it starts and then stops with a message that says that some services just stop when they are not in use by other programs. There are no error messages on the Event Viewer that are related to this. (Just informational messages showing that it started and another showing that it stopped). This service used to work, but for some unknown reason just decided to quit functioning. Does anyone have a clue as to what's happening? I've Goggled it and have found others that have the same problem, but no solutions were located.

The Group Policy Client Service Failed The Logon
Feb 28, 2010I stupidly deleted C:UsersMyName tuser.dat. Now when I try to log on to my account, I get the message "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon." I am now logged on to my Administrator account to post this message. All of my files that I use daily are in the MyName account. I deperately need to be able to access the MyName account. How can I restore the ntuser.dat file?
After posting this, I checked C:UsersMyName tuser.dat and saw that it is now listed after I rebooted the computer, but I still cannot login to my account.
Service That Fails To Start (Bonjour Service)
Apr 16, 2008I use Vista Ultimate 64.
For the past few weeks I've been having an issue with an Apple made service called "Bonjour Service". That service is used in several pieces of software including iTunes (which I do not use) but also some Adobe applications (Version Cue for example) and the font management utility I use which is Extensis Suitcase 11.0.1 for Windows.
Both Version Cue and Suitcase depend on the Bonjour Service to work and I have had no issues with it for months but recently, the Bonjour Service stopped working and would not start anymore. It now gives this error message when trying to start it:
"('Bonjour Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
My user account is an admin account so privileges is not an issue. I had made no changes to my system myself before the Bonjour service began to "refuse" starting but I remember that I installed a few Windows updates a couple days prior. My machine is always on and I don't re-boot everyday.
So I was wondering if anyone has heard of the issue and knows how I might fix it or if anyone can give me pointers on how I my start trouble shooting this and find what started preventing the Bonjour Service from starting. FWIW, the Windows Firewall is already off and turning off my anti-virus doesn't help (Eset NOD32).
Cannot Start BITS Service In XP

Nov 21, 2009We have a Vista Ultimate installation with all service packs installed. Both the local security policy and the domain policy after joining a domain have the reserved accounts NETWORK SERVICE and LOCAL SERVICE configured to start as a service. If we disconnect the notebook from the domain and restart it, the Windows Firewall service refuses to start. All attempts to manage the firewall fail because the service reports it has not started. If you manually attempt to start the firewall service it fails. As soon as we put the notebook back on the domain network and reboot it works. Does anyone have any insight on why this happens and how we can get the firewall to start? Any sequence that effectively prevents the firewall from starting strikes me as a pretty serious misfeature. often used to configure devices by cross connecting straight to the device, so we cannot count on being on the domain network, but clearly we want a working firewall at all times.
Software Licensing Service Not Start
Mar 23, 2008my Software Licensing service will not start because I keep getting access denied error messages, and as some people might know, this means windows won't can't be verified and it runs in limited functionality. I've run it in administrator and it will let me start, but as soon as I log off (which I need to do to get out of the reduced functionality), I get the access denied message again. how to get it to start and stay started?

After a blue screen crash, the system recover itself, but has since then been unable to connect to the internet or to my network. I get the red X in the lower right side corner of the screen. When I point to it says "Connection status: unknown the dependency service or group fail to start." When I click Diagnose and repair, a window comes up saying "network diagnostics cannot run because the diagnostics Policy service is not running." Then, I opened the service control Manager and try to start the DPS manually, but i get Windows could not start the service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied.

Aug 5, 2007I just built a Vista Ultimate x64 box, after a lot of effort I finally have most of my old Win2K Pro applications workings except for Real VNC. I have three machines in the work group, unfortunately one is Win2K Pro, XP Home and now the Vista x64. I think due to the Vista firewall or something else it will NOT let other machines access the Vista box, but I can access the other machines just fine from the Vista box. The work group seems to work fine. I am able to see/edit files on each computer Hdd.
The main problem as I have narrowed it down to, is that Vista box does NOT start in the VNC Server (service) mode. And I dont know how to get it to start. When I goto Start>Real VNC>Start VNC Server Service. It says the service is already running but I don't see the icon with the IP address in the task bar.

May 1, 2009I have a HP laptop with Windows vista home edition, and this has never happened to me. It started today, in which I thought it was nothing. I'm a little worried to be honest and I don't know what's wrong with my connection. I can access the internet on my mother computer which is a desktop, yet I can't on my HP laptop. it says "The Dependency Service or Group Failed to Start"?

at the System Diagnostic Report, I get a warning advising that the scan failed to detect running anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. protection, here and yet at Start>Control Panel>Security Centre, all protection requirements are shown as up and running, here
is there any way that I can get the scan to recognise the Security protection setup, and so include it in the System Diagnostic Report? I've had no problems with viruses, malware or spyware. This is purely an administrative issue to try and get the System Diagnostic Report to give a true account of the system.

Apr 4, 2009Okay, so I've had this HP Pavilion with Vista 64 bit less than a week (see specs below) and it's much much faster than my old Dell model [with XP] BUT today I was running a scheduled Hardware Diagnostic and it took like 30-40 min. and towards the end of it I tried to change the Power management so it would not go to Screen Saver mode (as it already had) and when I tried to do so, it took like 3 min. for it to open the Control Panel, 3 more minutes to open the Power Options dialogue, 2-3 more minutes to open the sub-menu there, and so forth - altogether about 8-9 minutes to do this simple task of changing Power Options while running hardware diagnostics.
I can understand that Hardware Diagnostics might take a lot of the computer's resources, but THIS is ridiculous! It was like going back to Windows 98 with 256MB RAM. Problem is, I have this*, so it shouldn't be this slow! Should it??? :

a. Should I have this item ticked to run?
b. If so what has caused it to become unticked and now apparently is not running?
c. What are the consequences of placing a tick back beside it to enable it to run?

Windows Could Not Start The Windows Audio Service On Local Computer
Jan 3, 2009My speaker icon in the taskbar has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running", if I right click it I get 3 options
1. Playback devices
2. Recording devices
3. Sounds
I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."
I tried to restore my computer but my restore point is past the point when this issue originated. Also, Conexant Driver is installed and working properly. If I right click on the volume icon with a little red X through it... I can click on Open Volume Mixer, and It says "No Audio Device Installed" Yet, my audio devices are installed.
Memory Diagnostic Results: Completed Rebooted Back Windows
May 8, 2008I ran the Memory Diagnostics tool and after it completed and rebooted back into Windows, I didnt see any results. Where do you see the results of the test? I'm trying to diagnose this problem where my PC is rebooting at random, but I can't determine if it's a memory problem or not. So where can I find the results of this test?

Local Security Policy
Sep 19, 2008Under Administrative tools, I don't see " Local Security Policy" to set some of the advanced Security UAC policies. I have 1 Laptop running Basic, 1 Running Premium and neither have the Policies Im looking for.
I have Business Vista loaded in Virtual PC to play around with settings and such, and this does have it. Does Local Security Policy only come on business and above versions of Vista? To map this out: Start=>Control Panel=>System and Maintance=> Admin Tools. Off of Admin Tools I should see "Local Security Policy" But I dont. Any Ideas why?
Domain Security Policy?
Oct 8, 2009We are running at my work 2 workgroups. My CoWorker and I are on a domain and need to connect to one of the servers on the workgroup using a simulation program. We get access denied error messages in the simulator program. Windows Explorer connects just fine to the workgroup server though.
We think there is a problem with the password security policy on the workgroup not being up to standard of my domain's security policy. The password to log into the server causes an error message saying the password is "too long, too short, or not complex enough." when we try to create a user account.

Jan 24, 2010I have the following error message when trying to login to vista on my laptop:
The User Profile Service service failed the login.
User profile cannot be loaded.
Just before the problem happened I was working to remove the Anti Virus Live virus from my laptop via the techsupportforum.com forum.
Two things I did within the hour of the problem happening are:
1. I ran the malware removal program OTL

2. I cleared and set system restore's cash-

Further details-I can and am able to login to Safe Mode I do not have a program called System Restore in the System Tools folder In Safe Mode I was able to change my password, but in normal mode I get the same error message I did windows updates and then tried to remove some of those updates, with only a few files that wouldn't allow me to delete them. Thank you for visiting my thread. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix my problem it would be great to hear about them.
Windows Search Service And Indexing Service Do Not Work
Jul 23, 2007Also my Windows Search service does not start. When I try to start it, I get these errors in the event log:
1. "The Windows Search Service cannot open the Jet property store.
The content index server cannot update or access information because of a database error. Stop and restart the search service. If the problem persists, reset and recrawl the content index. In some cases it may be necessary to delete and recreate the content index. (0x8004117f)"
2. "The Windows Search Service has failed to created the new system catalog. Internal error <4,0x8004117f>."
I'm totally lost as how to solve this problem. I spent hours on the web trying to find a solution, with no luck sofar. Anyone here who has a clue how to solve this one?
Screen Saver, Cannot Get Group Policy
Apr 20, 2010I cannot get group policy to initiate the screensaver on one of our vista business sp1 machines. I've done extensive research and found only solutions that revolve around updating the HID-compliant mouse driver[COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important][/COLOR][/COLOR]. Now, the machines we have do not use wireless mice and all of them are nearly identical. I've looked through the event viewer but cannot find any sort of task that comes from group policy that locks the machine. I did find eventID 124 "Task triggered by locking the workstation" but its not clear that this is coming from group policy. Regardless, the machine in question never has a log in the event viewer about this task.
