Cannot Access Community Features

Oct 8, 2009

I continually receive a message, in Windows Vista Mail, that I cannot post to a newsgroup, using community features, unless I am signed into the community. But then when I press the 'Yes' button to sign in, nothing happens (the same dialog remains). I have included an attachment of the message dialog.............

Update - Microsoft Responds To The Evolution Of Community

May 8, 2010

This message is to inform you that Microsoft will soon begin discontinuing newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft forums. Why? As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now; however, the traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the past several years while customers and participants are increasingly finding solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites. This move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it easier for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies and make the content easier to find by customers and search engines through improved indexing. Additionally, forums offer a better user and spam management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging a healthy discussion in a clean community space. To this end, Microsoft will begin to progressively shift available resources to the forums technology and discontinue support for newsgroups.

In addition to offering a compelling online browser experience, for those users who prefer to use an NNTP (newsgroup) reader to participate in the newsgroups community, we have developed a solution called the NNTP Bridge which allows a user to connect a variety of supported NNTP readers to the forums they would like to participate in and continue having the NTTP reader functionality........

File Sharing In Multi-Operating System Community

Mar 23, 2008

I recently got a new Vista machine - not because of a desire, but because of it becoming necessary. Anyhow, I have taken the steps to establish a network and have assured that the same network ID is on all computers. The several operating systems include Windows 98, XP Home Edition, and Vista Home Premium. The Vista Machine is set to private network status, set to share files and folders, set to share printers, set with Password Protection turned off, and set with Neetwork Discovery turned on. I have also gone to the folders that I have set to share on the computer (the C drive, among others) and have made sure to set the permissions so that "Everyone" has full access and control.

Lastly, I have set-up the system to disable User Account Control. Per Microsoft, everyone who has a computer associated with the network should be able to freely acces, read, and write to the files, printers, etc. that I have shared on this computer, right? On the network maps on all computers, all computers are visible. Furthermore, once a computer on the network is selected, the shared items are usually visible. But, for some reason, no computer can access the shared materials on the vista machine even though from the vista machine, I can access all shared materials on the other computers. When the shared materials on the Vista Machine are attempted to be accessed, a "Access Denied" Error/Alert is displayed. I have restarted all computer AND the router to no success.

Point Of Wimdows Mail Discussion Site "community "?

Feb 21, 2009

Can anyone tell me what the point of this "community " site is? Is it that people ask questiosn or make statements about the problems that they are having with Micorsoft Mail. I am confused. Does any one from Microsoft answer any queries? or is it a matter of the blind leading the blind as we say here in Australia ? For instance I am being bombarded by spam at the moment all with hotmail addresses. I try to block the domain using mail's junk mail filter but they keep coming.

Remove Program Features From Start Up?

Nov 25, 2008

I'm a novice so bear with me. Though I want some programs on my computer, I don't want them to automatically start up and slow down the boot up process. In the bottom right corner, I always have Adobe Downloader, Skype, Kodak Printer Status, Web Cam, etc. that I don't want to start up but want available on my desktop if I ever need them. If I go to Add/Delete programs, that will get rid of the program entirely. I just want to get rid of the automatic start up feature of the program. How can I do this????

Security Suites User Features

Jan 4, 2009

if not, admin is welcome to move it. This is NOT intended to be another "Best Security Suite" discussion. My current McAfee Security subscription is running out in a couple of months, and I am considering my options. Scanning the supplier's homepages, you see all types of claims and functions, marketed under innovative names, but very little about things like logs, firewall settings and user control in general. Though I may get answers by the manufacturers themselves, if I manage to find their email addresses, I thought it perhaps easier to ask the users on the forum. This will also allow others to see the answers.

I am looking for a product keeping good logs, both for AV and firewall, preferably possible to save. I also want the suite to ask me for decisions, but as I am far from an expert, I like it to suggest an answer. I do not want to make the firewall rules myself, and I like to be able to turn off all the questions if I like to, getting notifications instead. Then I want to be able to go back and remove program entries and change the rules myself. I also would like to be able to release or tighten on the protection level.

I am targeting the following (and no else, apart from my current McAfee):ESET Smart Security Avira Premium Security Suite Norton Internet Security 2009 Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 So, what logs and controls are there in these? Please do not make this a discussion of best, but personal experiences of the suites are, of course, much welcome.

Windows Features - Turn On Or Off. Advice Needed.

May 11, 2009

This is my current setup in Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn Windows features on or off.

To be frank, I haven't a clue what most of these features mean or do, and Help and Support has nothing to explain the function of the majority of them.

For example, if I rest my cursor over Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server, it tells me that it 'Manages and Catalogues removable media and operates automated media devices'.

Because I do use SDHC Memory Cards, USB Memory Sticks, Cameras, Card Readers and other sundry media hardware, should I then have this box ticked? If not, then just what does this feature relate to, or do?

Similarly, what the heck is the TFTP Client, and what does that do?

Advice about the other open boxes and their functions, would be appreciated, with the exception of Games, which is self-explanatory, and something I have no interest in anyway. Recommended settings with reasons for activation, will help me understand these features.

Turn Windows Features On Or Off - Blank List

Nov 12, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium SP2 on a desktop, fully updated. When I open "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off" the list is empty. It momentarily says "Please Wait...", then never populates the list.

I read that it may have something to do with Windows Updates errors, so I checked my history. I found 9 failed ones from 10-15 and 10-14. I went to the windows download site and tried to manually install them. Every one I tried ended with a message: "This update does not apply to your machine." I didn't bother to try a couple of them since I do not use Windows mail. Maybe updates had nothing to do with it. The problem persists.

I ran sfc /scannow and after completion it said corrupt files were found but was unable to fix some of them. I don't have a Vista CD but I do have all of the recovery disks I made when it was new, however I'm not sure how to proceed.

APIs And Kernel Features That Really Do Improve System Performance And Make It Easier

Apr 16, 2008

"I think the most disappointing thing for me is that part of me wants to like Vista, because there are a lot of interesting APIs and kernel features that really do improve system performance and make it easier to write for Windows" Many of them even work on older computers, and I doubt these features are why Vista is bloated. That is why I suggested trimming down Vista once.

Sp1 Install: Don't Speak, "pretty" Features

Jul 9, 2008

I have created a stable version that trims a lot of the fat, including 30 languages i don't speak, "pretty" features that i paid extra for, and tons of drivers/features that i haven't ever used. However, after running sfc /scannow i don't get normal error messages (maybe this is obvious to everyone but me ;p). the only errors i get are "cannot verify component..." which include Intel and amd64. however i do not have an Intel chip so this seems odd to me.

my goal is to maintain the sanctity of my slipstream copy as much as possible and to be able to install sp1. i haven't tried using the repair installation yet due to fear of it "fixing" my installation more than just fixing the errors i get. i am posting an attachment text file of my sfcdetails.txt with the above filter because i get none of the member style errors per the tutorials

This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

File Synchronization: Access To Other Files Set Up For Offline Access

Jun 23, 2008

I have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?
