Vista Ultimate x64. When I go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features, and click on the "Turn Windows features on or off" link, the Windows Features window is empty. how to get the features to be listed.
When i go to "default programs" and "set your default programs" Windows Media Player (The program in which id like to restore defaults) does not show. I have also gone to a video file, right clicked, went to properties and "open with". I clicked "browse" to find media player. When i find it, and double click it, it returns to the screen, but does not show Media Player listed. I know for a fact that Media Player is installed, i can open it. Another thing i have noticed that "Windows Media Player" is not listed in "Programs and Features" in Control Panel.
I have never seen this before. Is it correct or is there something wrong? I bought a new computer with Vista Home Premium. The USB ports are showing on the bottom Task Bar (the way it usually shows a Flash Drive when plugged in), with a little computer and a green check. I have not seen this before for USB drives not in use. If you right click it you get the message "Safely Remove Hardware" and if you go further it is called USB Mass Storage Data at Port_#0005.Hub_#0008. This relates to my Drives G,H,I,J. Can someone clarify this?

I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (64 bit). When I run Windows Update, there is no SP2 to install! I downloaded and installed microsoft Readiness tool (KB947821) also I did reset my windows update components but still problem is stable as a rock!!
Anyone got the time to explain what the heck Vista "compatibility files" are all about? In my case I installed a older piece of software (maybe a couple of years old) on my laptop runnibg Vista Basic Home, the program installed and runs ok, but when I went take a look in the program's folder , there were files that should have been that are not listed, then I noticed listed on the menu where Organize, Views, Burn options are located another option called Compatibility Files, so being the seek and ye shall find kind of guy I clicked on the "compatibility files" folder and there were the missing files.
There are also various spelling mistakes (e.g. "center" for centre, "color" for colour) in the user interfaces. This appears to be a fault also in MS Office, which claims to take its UI language from the Windows locale but in the case of English this doesn't work. The interface language appears to be American.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and it has been running great until this morning when I tried to turn on my computer. It took forever just to get me to a random blue screen where it then stalled and about ten minutes later a box came up and asked me which language I would like to use. Since Wookie was not listed I settled for English. Then another few minutes went by until my computer painfully popped up another box asking which driver I would like to select so that I could run Startup Repair.
However, there aren't any drivers listed! What do I do from here? I have a tendency to push the big button that says launch so I just clicked next without selecting any drivers (mostly because there weren't any to choose from). It then began Startup Repair, hooray! But hours went by and finnaly I came home from work and it was finally done repairing. It said it repaired everything and all I needed to do was restart and everything would be just fine and dandy. But was it? Well, that's where you fit in oh great computer gods. Will you answer my prayers? What should I do? Possibly a mouse sacrafice? A computer mouse that is...
Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP2. In Computer Management > Display adapters , I have NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT listed twice.
Does deleting a shortcut delete the program? For example: I went to All Programs, HP, Deskjet 4200 series, Smart Web Printing, and under Type was listed Shortcut. If I delete it, does that delete the program?
It says it has been disabled by the administrator. I am logged onto an account with admin privileges. How can I enable these features and others that seem to be disabled. I have Home Premium 32bit. The computer is running sluggishly and I am trying to remove programs that may be viruses or that are just taking up space.
I was wondering if I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate will it just add the missing features, or do a complete reinstall? When I went from XP to Vista I had to redo everything from scratch. Vista runs great on my XPS M1730 but would like to add the features missing.
I have looked in options section but cannot find a hotkey assignment section for Windows Vista (Ultimate) Snipper Tool. Does it even exist? I also don't see the option to print a hard copy - only save as and send to features.
I continually receive a message, in Windows Vista Mail, that I cannot post to a newsgroup, using community features, unless I am signed into the community. But then when I press the 'Yes' button to sign in, nothing happens (the same dialog remains). I have included an attachment of the message dialog.............
When I go to control panel and try loading Program and Features, nothing happens. In other words, I can't uninstall or repair anything because I can't even get passed loading this page.
The new printers are only compatible with Outlook Express. I have Vista with windows mail and can't use some features because of this. Can Outlook be installed in Vista?
I am connecting an external hard drive (Acomdata 250G drive - pretty standard) via USB to my HP laptop running Vista. I am able to see the device listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Drilling into Properties, I see that the device is running properly and, having re-loaded the device drivers, I have the most recent drivers. The issue: I am unable to see the device listed in Window Explorer, and thus I can't drill into the folders to get at the content.
Is there any tool that can list particular key/entry (i.e firefox) from everywhere in the registry ??? I have install DU Meter to monitor network traffic/usage...which installs gadget for the sidebar as well. For some reason i uninstall and re-install the application and i cannot get the gadget listed when i try to add .
I'm a novice so bear with me. Though I want some programs on my computer, I don't want them to automatically start up and slow down the boot up process. In the bottom right corner, I always have Adobe Downloader, Skype, Kodak Printer Status, Web Cam, etc. that I don't want to start up but want available on my desktop if I ever need them. If I go to Add/Delete programs, that will get rid of the program entirely. I just want to get rid of the automatic start up feature of the program. How can I do this????
if not, admin is welcome to move it. This is NOT intended to be another "Best Security Suite" discussion. My current McAfee Security subscription is running out in a couple of months, and I am considering my options. Scanning the supplier's homepages, you see all types of claims and functions, marketed under innovative names, but very little about things like logs, firewall settings and user control in general. Though I may get answers by the manufacturers themselves, if I manage to find their email addresses, I thought it perhaps easier to ask the users on the forum. This will also allow others to see the answers.
I am looking for a product keeping good logs, both for AV and firewall, preferably possible to save. I also want the suite to ask me for decisions, but as I am far from an expert, I like it to suggest an answer. I do not want to make the firewall rules myself, and I like to be able to turn off all the questions if I like to, getting notifications instead. Then I want to be able to go back and remove program entries and change the rules myself. I also would like to be able to release or tighten on the protection level.
I am targeting the following (and no else, apart from my current McAfee):ESET Smart Security Avira Premium Security Suite Norton Internet Security 2009 Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 So, what logs and controls are there in these? Please do not make this a discussion of best, but personal experiences of the suites are, of course, much welcome.
There are many new features in Windows Vista that are installed by default that you may not need. These extra and unneeded features can slow down your computer and take up more storage space. If you would like to uninstall, or turn off, these extra features, this tip is for you.
Windows Features can be uninstalled using the Windows Features utility. Follow these steps to uninstall applications such as the Windows Fax and Scan and many more:.... Â
This is my current setup in Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn Windows features on or off.
To be frank, I haven't a clue what most of these features mean or do, and Help and Support has nothing to explain the function of the majority of them.
For example, if I rest my cursor over Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server, it tells me that it 'Manages and Catalogues removable media and operates automated media devices'.
Because I do use SDHC Memory Cards, USB Memory Sticks, Cameras, Card Readers and other sundry media hardware, should I then have this box ticked? If not, then just what does this feature relate to, or do?
Similarly, what the heck is the TFTP Client, and what does that do?
Advice about the other open boxes and their functions, would be appreciated, with the exception of Games, which is self-explanatory, and something I have no interest in anyway. Recommended settings with reasons for activation, will help me understand these features.
I have Vista Home Premium SP2 on a desktop, fully updated. When I open "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off" the list is empty. It momentarily says "Please Wait...", then never populates the list.
I read that it may have something to do with Windows Updates errors, so I checked my history. I found 9 failed ones from 10-15 and 10-14. I went to the windows download site and tried to manually install them. Every one I tried ended with a message: "This update does not apply to your machine." I didn't bother to try a couple of them since I do not use Windows mail. Maybe updates had nothing to do with it. The problem persists.
I ran sfc /scannow and after completion it said corrupt files were found but was unable to fix some of them. I don't have a Vista CD but I do have all of the recovery disks I made when it was new, however I'm not sure how to proceed.
when a virus or I do something stupid or an interruption occurs. If this results in a partial installation but no unstall file existing.. It is impossible to re-install that application, or to remove the entry from programs and features.
