How To Get The Features To Be Listed
Apr 15, 2009Vista Ultimate x64. When I go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features, and click on the "Turn Windows features on or off" link, the Windows Features window is empty. how to get the features to be listed.

Im on usage allowance with mobile broadband. Heard about sp1 for release feb/mar? will sp1 incorporate all / most of the available updates so shall i wait til sp1 and forget updates? Also wonder if im downloading updates that have auto downloaded anyway!

Jul 9, 2008It says it has been disabled by the administrator. I am logged onto an account with admin privileges. How can I enable these features and others that seem to be disabled. I have Home Premium 32bit. The computer is running sluggishly and I am trying to remove programs that may be viruses or that are just taking up space.

May 14, 2010First, I added the three programs in the pic to the start up folder, but they get blocked. I have to manually run each one and then accept the UAC. So, I next tried adding to the task scheduler and running at log on, but they still bring up the UAC.
IS there a way to accomplish this for these programs?

64-bit: Specific Advice Should Follow?
Feb 9, 2009I do support in a smallish/mid-sized business, and for the first time ever we are considering trying out a 64-bit windows client for our 3d cad operator. I've never had any experience with a 64 bit OS before, but I need to try to test it out and make sure it is compatible with our software and systems here. We have a 2000/2003 mixed-mode AD domain with exchange 2007 and terminal servers. A couple of our 2003 servers are already 64-bit.
- What if anything should I be concerned about? Any gotchas?
- Would it be wise to test this in a virtual machine before spending money on the hardware and then finding out it may not be feasible?
- Is there any other specific advice I should follow?

May 19, 2008My Vista Laptop. I enabled Guest, although I heard it is better not to do that. I have a administrative account named "Owner". And I added a user name called "Brandon T". On this last one I assigned a password. Network is set to "private". Password protected sharing is set to "off" to avoid any hassles. Public folder sharing is set to off because I want to share specific files. For the specific folder "music", sharing says "Brandon T" and "Owner". "Brandon T" is "reading" but that's ok because I only want to copy for back up purposes onto my desktop. I have McAfee protection but I disabled firewalls on both sides of the equation.
My XP Desktop. One user account "Brandon T" with same password as laptop. Workgroup is set to same as laptop, "MSHOME". I have NOT downloaded the LLTP .... thing ... because I read it wasn't necessary to share. My Desktop CAN SEE the "music" file, but ... and you know what's coming ... " is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access pemissions."
Trying To Block Specific Words
Jan 21, 2010When I had outlook Express, I could block specific words from coming into my Inbox (and messages containing that word would go straight to Junk). I can't seem to find this option with Windows Mail. I have tried adding domain name etc to block senders list, but still keep getting about 40 e mails per day, staight to my Inbox, and all of them with the same subject heading.

Remove Program Features From Start Up?
Nov 25, 2008I'm a novice so bear with me. Though I want some programs on my computer, I don't want them to automatically start up and slow down the boot up process. In the bottom right corner, I always have Adobe Downloader, Skype, Kodak Printer Status, Web Cam, etc. that I don't want to start up but want available on my desktop if I ever need them. If I go to Add/Delete programs, that will get rid of the program entirely. I just want to get rid of the automatic start up feature of the program. How can I do this????

My current McAfee Security subscription is running out in a couple of months, and I am considering my options. Scanning the supplier's homepages, you see all types of claims and functions, marketed under innovative names, but very little about things like logs, firewall settings and user control in general. Though I may get answers by the manufacturers themselves, if I manage to find their email addresses, I thought it perhaps easier to ask the users on the forum. This will also allow others to see the answers.
I am looking for a product keeping good logs, both for AV and firewall, preferably possible to save. I also want the suite to ask me for decisions, but as I am far from an expert, I like it to suggest an answer. I do not want to make the firewall rules myself, and I like to be able to turn off all the questions if I like to, getting notifications instead. Then I want to be able to go back and remove program entries and change the rules myself. I also would like to be able to release or tighten on the protection level.
I am targeting the following (and no else, apart from my current McAfee):ESET Smart Security Avira Premium Security Suite Norton Internet Security 2009 Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 So, what logs and controls are there in these? Turn Off UAC Notification For Specific Programs
Apr 24, 2010I'm running a number of programs such as skype with special settings (for skype it is Vista SP2 compatability so it doesn't use up my taskbar bar when minimized). If I do that I get a popup asking me if I'm sure I want to run the app (allow it to make changes). I don't want to turn UAC completely off but even on the lowest settings before shutting it off, it has popups for my "special" apps. How do I add exceptions for my special apps as I have quite a few of them I run on a regular basis.

Mar 29, 2009I used to be able to connect to the network in my shared house with no problem via the wireless but at some point it just dropped off and was doing so intermittently, then it refused to connect point blank. The router is in the room next door to mine and the computer can see it is there with 100% 'reception' but it cannot connect to it. It works fine via the ethernet cable that I have but not wirelessly. In addition to this I can connect to an unsecured network wirelessly that occassionally becomes available which has less reception than the one I am trying to access. I don't understand why I can connect to one but not the other. I have not been able to connect wirelessly to this network for months now, and whilst the ethernet is working fine using it defies the point of having a laptop and wanting to move it around.

To be frank, I haven't a clue what most of these features mean or do, and Help and Support has nothing to explain the function of the majority of them.
For example, if I rest my cursor over Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server, it tells me that it 'Manages and Catalogues removable media and operates automated media devices'.
Because I do use SDHC Memory Cards, USB Memory Sticks, Cameras, Card Readers and other sundry media hardware, should I then have this box ticked? If not, then just what does this feature relate to, or do?
Similarly, what the heck is the TFTP Client, and what does that do?
Advice about the other open boxes and their functions, would be appreciated, with the exception of Games, which is self-explanatory, and something I have no interest in anyway. Recommended settings with reasons for activation, will help me understand these features.
Turn Windows Features On Or Off - Blank List
Nov 12, 2009I have Vista Home Premium SP2 on a desktop, fully updated. When I open "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off" the list is empty. It momentarily says "Please Wait...", then never populates the list.
I read that it may have something to do with Windows Updates errors, so I checked my history. I found 9 failed ones from 10-15 and 10-14. I went to the windows download site and tried to manually install them. Every one I tried ended with a message: "This update does not apply to your machine." I didn't bother to try a couple of them since I do not use Windows mail. Maybe updates had nothing to do with it. The problem persists.
I ran sfc /scannow and after completion it said corrupt files were found but was unable to fix some of them. I don't have a Vista CD but I do have all of the recovery disks I made when it was new, however I'm not sure how to proceed.
