Start Applications On Specific CPU And Priority

Feb 11, 2007

There is a great little utility that has been around for ages in Windows called the start command. This dos command allows you to start any process with advanced settings.  In Windows Vista it is perfect if you want to start an application and tell windows to only run it on one CPU and at a high priority level.  For example, let's say that you want to start Microsoft Paint and have it run on your second CPU core at Above Normal priority. The command below will accomplish this: ...

Any Chance My Monitor Will Work With?

Mar 26, 2009

I went to the Driver Download page at Dell for my monitor and it has a driver listed for download for XP but none for Vista. I guess that means they have no driver for Vista so it won't work, right? So there's NO WAY I can make the thing work with Vista 64bit right? I need to know before I unpack the new computer because if my monitor is yet another thing that won't work with Vista (I already have a list of software that won't) then I may take the dang thing back and buy a new XP computer if I can find one somewhere.

I have spent the past 2 days looking at lists of software and hardware that may or may not work with Vista Premium, and it's going to cost me hundreds of dollars to replace all this stuff... and if I have to get a new monitor, well there's another $200-300 or so. Is it really worth it to add Vista or should I take this computer back before I take it out of the box and buy a new computer with XP and a lot of RAM so everything I have will keep working?

Disconnect From The Work Monitor

Jun 5, 2008

I use dual monitors. My laptop at home and the laptop and a 24" at work. Every time I disconnect from the work monitor my desktop defaults back to the laptop. (as it should) However, when reconnected to the 24" I have to re-configure my desktops. Is their some way in vista to save two separate Desktop profiles? Is there some vista compatible 3rd party.

Second Monitor Setting Doen't Work

Mar 30, 2009

Vista 32 & Nvidia Is there anyway to set "Horizontal Span" across two monitors? Burnout Paradise has the option to run 1,2 or 3 monitors but requires the Horizontal Span feature. The Extending the desktop to a second monitor setting does not work. Basically I need something that will allow me to set a 3300x1050 desktop resolution across both monitors. I've tried creating a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel but that didn't work. For those that will suggest Ultramon there isn't a Horizontal span feature that I could find anyways. Browsing Google for an hour or so just came up with others looking for an answer as well. Just thought I'd come to where the smart people are and ask.

Recycle.bin On Secondary Drive?

Just ran bit defender and got this weird message; first time I've seen it. To check things out I booted into safe mode and took a look at F; there are in fact two recycle bins, both empty. F isn't my boot drive, so why are they there as opposed to C? Safe to delete? Why would my av say they're password protected?

WD Caviar 80gb Secondary IDE Drive

Mar 2, 2009

I had a WD 80gb Caviar HDD in my old Dell, it has alot of important files on it that I am trying to get, so I pulled out the IDE cable that came with my P6T Deluxe, plugged it in to the MB, too the Hard drive, and plugged in the power cable. I also swapped the jumper on the HDD to "Slave" it was on "CS" not sure what that means, but I assumed it made the drive the Master drive.

Anyway, PC boots up fine, but HDD is not detected on bootup, but I can see it in device manager in Vista, but the drive is not showing up in explorer for me to explore through.

Secondary Username Cant Send Or Receive Mail

My primary email account works fine. I have two secondary user names on my windows mail. They use to work but recently wont receive/send mail. I telephoned ISP and they have checked and say that they should work. Username and password is different than primary user. Have clicked accounts/tools and checked that username and password etc are the same as the server. They say there must be something wrong with settings or something on windows mail.

How Dead Secondary Hard Drive Stop From Booting?

Sep 8, 2009

I tried to connect my computer to my HDTV and Vista decided it didn't want to load. It would get the to initial Microsoft Corporation load screen with the scrolling green bar and instantly lock up. Wen't back to my normal 19" monitor and had the same problem. It would boot into safe mode - after hanging on crcdisk.sys for an extended period of time (around 10 minutes). System restore didn't fix the problem. I started playing with components which turned out to be a frustrating game of trial and error. I narrowed the issue down to one of my hard drives (I have 4). When it is unplugged, everything is all good. When I connect it again, Vista locks up on boot. So does Vista point-blank refuse to start if there is a faulty drive in the mix? Keep in mind that all it had on it was movies and games, no crucial system files. And would anybody hazard a guess as to what has happened to the drive, and if it is recoverable. It's a Seagate 500GB.

Added A Second Monitor To The GeForce 7100 GS Using A DVI-VGA Adapter And For The Life Of Me Cannot Get It To Display Anything, The Monitor Is Just In Sleep Mode

Apr 23, 2010

I added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........

64-bit: Specific Advice Should Follow?

Feb 9, 2009

I do support in a smallish/mid-sized business, and for the first time ever we are considering trying out a 64-bit windows client for our 3d cad operator. I've never had any experience with a 64 bit OS before, but I need to try to test it out and make sure it is compatible with our software and systems here. We have a 2000/2003 mixed-mode AD domain with exchange 2007 and terminal servers. A couple of our 2003 servers are already 64-bit.

- What if anything should I be concerned about? Any gotchas?
- Would it be wise to test this in a virtual machine before spending money on the hardware and then finding out it may not be feasible?
- Is there any other specific advice I should follow?

Share Specific Files

May 19, 2008

My Vista Laptop. I enabled Guest, although I heard it is better not to do that. I have a administrative account named "Owner". And I added a user name called "Brandon T". On this last one I assigned a password. Network is set to "private". Password protected sharing is set to "off" to avoid any hassles. Public folder sharing is set to off because I want to share specific files. For the specific folder "music", sharing says "Brandon T" and "Owner". "Brandon T" is "reading" but that's ok because I only want to copy for back up purposes onto my desktop. I have McAfee protection but I disabled firewalls on both sides of the equation.

My XP Desktop. One user account "Brandon T" with same password as laptop. Workgroup is set to same as laptop, "MSHOME". I have NOT downloaded the LLTP .... thing ... because I read it wasn't necessary to share. My Desktop CAN SEE the "music" file, but ... and you know what's coming ... " is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access pemissions."

Turn Off UAC Notification For Specific Programs

Apr 24, 2010

I'm running a number of programs such as skype with special settings (for skype it is Vista SP2 compatability so it doesn't use up my taskbar bar when minimized). If I do that I get a popup asking me if I'm sure I want to run the app (allow it to make changes). I don't want to turn UAC completely off but even on the lowest settings before shutting it off, it has popups for my "special" apps. How do I add exceptions for my special apps as I have quite a few of them I run on a regular basis.

Connecting To Specific Network Dropped Off

Mar 29, 2009

I used to be able to connect to the network in my shared house with no problem via the wireless but at some point it just dropped off and was doing so intermittently, then it refused to connect point blank. The router is in the room next door to mine and the computer can see it is there with 100% 'reception' but it cannot connect to it. It works fine via the ethernet cable that I have but not wirelessly. In addition to this I can connect to an unsecured network wirelessly that occassionally becomes available which has less reception than the one I am trying to access. I don't understand why I can connect to one but not the other. I have not been able to connect wirelessly to this network for months now, and whilst the ethernet is working fine using it defies the point of having a laptop and wanting to move it around.
