View 5 Replies View RelatedI was enjoying a glass of wine the other evening, and I spilled a full glass of wine onto the keyboard of my Toshiba Satellite which had Windows XP. I killed it DEAD. Anyway, I went to town (I live in the bush) and bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop. When I got home I found it had Vista in it. No matter how much I tried, I cannot get it to perform like any of the other Toshiba sattelites that I have had over the years with XP in them. (this is my own personal observation). "happy days" I found XP software on Ebay for only au$60 so I bought it. I am not really computer "savvy" but I struggle through. I cannot get the computer to download the new XP program, it keeps telling me that I cannot download something old onto something new.

I can't figure out how to turn the computer off using only the key board. In previous windows, it was Windows/U/S , or maybe Windows/U/U. With Vista, I seem to have to use the mouse, or the infernal laptop touch pad, to get to, then click on, an arrow which displays a list, which requires the use of the touch pad again, because the list has no accelerator keys. 4 steps, each more complicated than one letter, where one keyboard letter used to do.
Also, I don't have them side by side, but it seems that when playing Solitaire, it took longer to turn over each set of 3 cards, than it did for me on WinXP or Win98, and I'm sure the Vista CPU is faster than the others I've used. (It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop, which came with Vista installed, but I don't know the speed.
Is there a way to get new post just from a particular forum? Say, if I wanted to only see the new posts in Tutorials or Software or whatever?

I attempted to reboot and could not. 95 errors posted in the event log. Most these where WMI (source) and the event ID was 24. I cannot find a solution, and I am not that well knowing a lot. I can probably make the corrections if I have a solution given to me.

I run nicely if I populate two of the slots with 1GB matched memory but the minute I populate the other two slots with the same brand of matched 1GB memory boards, I get a BSOD. Is this a Vista problem? If I use either of the mobo slots to test the memory (provided its not more than 1 GB each) they both work. The mobo is GA-EP35C-DS3R.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a beta version (build 7000) of this O.S. The installation went very well and on a previously formatted disc, completed in 20 minutes. All of my Vista software was installed without problems. I realise that this a beta version, and as such may be subject to quite a number of improvements and bug fixes during the next few months. My initial impression though is that this a good system, but not very much better than Vista. There is an on board defragmentation tool, which operates automatically, in addition to spectacular new desktops, but overall it looks more like the result of a Vista service pack. Being quite satisfied with my currentVista ultimate, I am at this stage definitely not prepared to spend money again on this "new" operating system as soon as it appears in the shops.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI "upgraded" from 32bit XP, to Vista x64. Now, my system is plagued with a mainboard that auto-throttles when its chipset hits 45C temps. As a result, until I can figure out how to get a little more cooling into it, I've temporarily underclocked my CPU to 2600mhz(x2) from 3000mhz. Or, at least, I -was- doing that, before Vista SP1.
Now, no matter what I set, or how I set it, it seems to get reset to 100% If I use Vista's own power scheme settings, I can make it run at 85% max 5% min, and it saves, goes a while, maybe 10 to 15 minutes, then I notice the system is auto-throttling again. I check, and sure enough, it's set back to 100% max, 100%min.
If I use AMD OverDrive, the same thing happens.. I set to 13x multiplier, and drop the voltage a bit. 10-15 minutes later, It shows my "Desired Settings" still, and they have to be re-applied.
Since I have moved from Outlook Express to VISTA Windows Mail whenever I try to past from the clipboard into an e-mail I am composing it automatically changes any foriegn language fonts characters to all English characters. I would then have to highlight each foriegn language phrase and then select the language font from the font menu. I should not have to do this if Window Mail would retain the original fonts from the clipboard or other document program I am pasting from. How can I
resolve this problem.
Nvidia losing money over defective GPUs. by Justin Mann on August 13, 2008, 12:00 PM Nvidia’s recent struggles with GPU manufacturing are definitely taking its toll on the company. As a result of manufacturing defects and the inevitable fallout from it, it seems that Nvidia has gone from enjoying a few beautiful years on top to actually losing money recently. In particular, Nvidia saw a decrease in revenue for the second quarter of this year, resulting in a financial loss for the company.
In total, they lost over $120 million, and recent cuts in sales haven’t helped them out either. They outright admitted that they underestimated AMD, but nobody can really blame them for that. Yesterday, it was speculated that there were manufacturing defects in the G92 and G94 chipsets, on top of the already known bad parts in the G84 and G86 series. Nvidia may have tried to avoid blame here and there, but ultimately it is coming down on them and they have been stuck with warranty replacements galore. Even if the newer chipsets are fine, it doesn't do anything to remedy the mass amounts of defective ones already sold..........
I m looking to buy a new desktop as i m now fed up with my compaq laptop. I was wondering which combination would be better? 1: Intel Motherboard and Processor with Nvidia Graphics Card? 2: AMD Motherboard and Processor with ATI Graphics Card?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAny instructions for overclocking an Intel Q6600 Quad CPU. Want increase to at least 2.9mhz from 2.4mhz. Or suggestions for a different CPU, Quad preferred
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat is overclocking? Firstly, it is currently the mostly widely used word that does not appear in the English dictionary...... Secondly, it is operating hardware (particularly CPU, RAM, motherboard, and video card) above and beyond rated specs. Rated specs are the level to which a particular piece of hardware is expected to, has been tested to, and is warranted to perform. What this equates to in the real world is a certain price tag for a certain level of expected performance.... Overclockers strive to determine not what hardware should do, but what can do.
Overclocking is more of an art than a science. There is no combination of settings that will yield the best results for every system...... Greater experience does make the overclocking process less cumbersome, but it is and always will be a trial and error process..... Don't be afraid to experiment, but always take things slow and be aware of temperature and voltage limits. Overclocking Basics (particular to Intel systems, though many of the concepts apply to AMD systems as well)
1) Limitations - Each hardware component has physical limitations that, at a minimum, meet the rated (stock) specifications..... In the process of thoroughly overclocking a system, the actual limitations of various components will be found. In general, the CPU, RAM, and motherboard will control the overclock, but other components such as the PSU and cooling will have a major impact on overclocking abilities..... Depending on which of the three primary components (CPU, RAM, and mobo) is the first to reach its limits, different steps can be taken to squeeze more out of the other components. Video card overclocking is generally independent of overclocking the components previously listed.
2) Overclocking in the BIOS vs. overclocking software - Whenever the option exists, manipulating BIOS settings is the best way to accomplish overclocking..... BIOSes on value/low end motherboards and on proprietary systems such as Dells and HPs generally have few to no options available for overclocking....... On such systems, there is the potential to overclock through software, though there is not a single piece of software to overclock every board............
I am running Windows Vista Business on a Vaio VGN-TZ21WN and I loathe the entire experience. The notable changes in SP1 list gives me some hope, however SP2 won't come up in Windows Update. Before I use the standalone install, I have read all the possible reasons why this might happen and it appears the only driver issue left is the Intel video chip: I am stuck with 7.14.10.1387
The update from Intel won't install - asking me to get an update from Vaio. Vaio are not offering anything new yet. Longshot time: Has anyone else here forced an install SP1 in a similar situation? I am keen to at least try and fix this nasty, nasty OS before I am just forced into buying a Macbook instead.
I built a computer for a friend of mine running Vista Ultimate 32bit OS, with SP1 installed. Everything's been working great, except one annoying issue that I can't get to the bottom of!! When the machine is shutdown from the operating system, it powers all the way down and then it turns right back on...I've checked all of the wake-on settings in the BIOS and Device Manager, checked the powerconfg -devicequery wake_armed from the command line and disabled all of the devices that showed up, clearing all of the entries...I've updated the BIOS and Chipset drivers too. I have the Intel DG33FB Motherboard with Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor installed.

After that screen passes by, i got a different new screen that i never got before. it was a phoenix awardbios screen. and below that it said, floppy disk(s) fail (40).
never seen that before. when i try to start my computer up, i can either go to start up repair or start normally. when i do the start up repair( ive done it 9 times already) it says my computer cant fix the problem, and then i can either send or not the error report. and when i start it up normally, it goes to a blank screen. and then my computer goes into power save mode. anyone know whats up with it and how i can fix it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIt looks like since i updated Vista with SP1, i'm experiencing paquet loss. The motherboard is a Tyan 5400xt. (bios Updated to 1.01 - Latest stable) My cable modem box (ISP one) is on 192.168.1.1. When i ping -t 192.168.1.1 i have about 30% paquet loss !I changed the cable, the port on which the cable is plugged. Disabled IPv6 etc ..
It still happens.
When i do the same test with another computer @home (running vista 32, 3Com chip Lan) No probelm ! Prior installing this 5400xt, i was running a K8we, vista Ultimate x64 SP1 same cable, same switch port : No problems at all. So i suspect some bug / incompatibily with this Lan chipset and Vista. I'm running MS drivers because i cannot install the latest Intel Lan drivers. When I want to install them, it stops with a "software not compatible with this version of windows".
Here are my plans:
Boot a linux live Ubuntu : ping -t and see if it'shardware related or soft. Then (i suspect soft) Reinstall Vista from Scratch. Update just before SP1. Install Latest Intel drivers ( i was able to install them prior applying SP1, but after SP1 it starts to behave strangely and when i wanted to uninstall these drivers to test with MS drivers i was not able to uninstall - software incompatible with this version of windows).
Following a report Monday on the Inquirer, the New York Times reported Wednesday that Intel's IT department "found no compelling case" for upgrading.
And that's despite the fact that it's been nearly seven years since XP debuted. It's not a good thing, if your customers are electing to stick with 7-year-old technology. (In fairness, XP did get a fairly big update with Windows XP Service Pack 2, but even that is four years old at this point.)
Microsoft, which once predicted businesses would adopt Vista at twice the rate they moved to XP, has scaled back its ambitions and these days talks a lot about how long the adoption curve is for businesses when it comes to new operating systems.
My computer performed an automatic update Saturday night. This was deemed "important" by the Windows Update program. It completely blew up the graphics on my computer, a 4 month old Dell Insperion 530S running Vista Home Premium. It turned my 19 inch monitor into a 12 inch monitor. Some web pages were squeezed into the middle of the screen, with blank spaces on each side. Some were spread way out. Some were all the way to the left, some all the way to the right. Neither Word nor Excel displayed properly. Only Quicken seemed okay, but not QuickBooks. I restored the system to the previous settings, and fixed the problem, but automatic update did the same thing last night and I had to restore it again.
I have disabled the automatic update feature, at least for now. I don't want to be subjected to this every morning when I wake up! I don't know if this is an Intel problem or a Microsoft problem, but the lack of testing on a update like this is just inexcusable......
vista is not supporting my drivers...i searched a lot at intels website and google but could not find any solution.. Need the required Graphic drivers or steps to solve this problem..i really cant go for a new PC right now...i heard we can overcome with this problem.
