FDisk Command Doesn't Work From A Command Line Start

Mar 12, 2009

I am writing to this Forum in desperation because I cannot find any way to get in touch by email with Windows Live OneCare even though I am a paid subscriber. I have NOT had a good experience of MS tech support. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.

As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

Command Line Ren (Rename) Command Broken?

May 17, 2008

I'm having trouble with the REN command with wild cards as used from the command prompt. For example, in the REN command help, it says: "For example, if you had files that are named smitha.doc, smithb.doc, and smithc.doc, you could use the ren smith*.doc smythe*.doc command. All file names automatically show the new spelling, and are renamed smythea.doc, smytheb.doc, and smythec.doc.".........

Domain Authentication Fails On To RDP Attempt

Mar 23, 2008

Here is a Vista Remote Desktop problem we are having. It affects every Vista machine I have seen on our network. I believe this is going to be a tough one? Remote machine? Vista Enterprise on Windows 2003 AD network. Local machine? Vista, any version, domain member or not, connecting from within the network. When trying to complete the Remote Desktop connection using a domain account, the user gets the following error:???No authority could be contacted for authentication. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support.??? If the local (client) machine is running XP, no problem. If you use an account local to the remote Vista machine, no problem (not surprisingly). Strangest of all, if I try to make the connection from a machine outside of our network, no problem.(Normally the firewall would block that, but I temporarily allowed RDP from anywhere.)

Cannot Send Email: The Authentication Setting Might Not Be Correct For Your Outgoing

May 25, 2009

About a week ago, I realized I could no longer send email. Same goes for my laptop on my home wireless network. Everything has been working fine for years and I don't recall making any changes that might affect the email. I have changed to port 587 and checked the authenticity required box but it didn't do any good. I went through Comcasts instructions for setting up email using Windows Vista, but it's still a no go. Another suggestion I read about is email scanning software. I turned of Norton 360 email scanner but it didn't fix the problem.

Here is the error I'm getting on my desktop box when I try to send a test msg to me (or anyone else for that matter). "The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. The Authentication Setting Might Not Be Correct For Your Outgoing E-mail [SMTP] Server

I have 2 computers, one has Outook (xp) and one has Windows mail (vista) both set up for the same email address. When I receive an email on Windows and open it, it doesn't appear on the Outlook computer. Anything received on Outlook always comes through on Windows.

How can I get my email to always appear on both computers?

Also, the Windows Vista computer will only receive email, I get an error message when I try to send:

I need to know what is already installed, ie 1 * 2Gb module, or 2 * 1Gb modules. Vista Control Panel (System) confirms that I have 2Gb, but not how it is arranged.

If someone steals my USB hard drive or DVD that contain my backups can they access all the data on them? If there is no security in vista backup, what do you recommend I do to secure my backups?

Additional Logon Information Required?

Mar 23, 2008

I am having difficulty connecting to the wireless network that my apartment building provides. I just purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. On my old computer, which had Windows XP, I had no problems. All XP required of me was to enter the password that my landlord provided to me in order to access the secured wireless network. However, now that I have Vista, I try to connect and it asks me for: 1. Username, 2. Password and 3. Log on Domain. The only information I have is the password which worked on XP before. When I enter only that, I get a message saying "Additional Log on Information Required" or something to that effect. I don't have any more information than that.

Vista64 Ultimate SP1: Validation Required

Apr 2, 2008

I'm running Vista64 ultimate SP1 and had to reactive a month or two ago because of hardware changes. Tonight I flashed my bios (only thing I did) and I was notified I had to activate Vista again! It took about 20min last time... what a pain in the arse.

I decided to attempt an online reactivation and low and behold Vista reactivated? How could this be? I installed once with the key. The second time I had to call Microsoft (in India I think) and the third validation was OK online? I don't know if this has happed to others but I thought I'd share my weird experience with the latest and greatest Micro$oft product.

USB Thumb Drives & Required Drive

I have noticed that even after being told it is "safe to remove hardware" the light on the thumb drive doesn't go off and the next time I put it into the USB drive of my Vista machine, it always says that the drive needs to be scanned and fixed. If it was just one thumb drive, I would think it was the drive, but I get this with all of them, I have three Dane Elec drives, two Sony, a Memorex and a SanDisk Cruzer. Is this a bug that hasn't been worked out yet, or is there something I am missing?

Windows Mail Required Password

Feb 23, 2009

I tried to respond to an extremely old thread, and couldn't because of that. So I am reposting here as others may have the same concern.dannygallo;756753 Wrote: I agree with Danny. One shouldn't have to create a separate user account for Windows just to keep prying eyes from checking out email. That would be analogous to giving each person who lives in the same household a separate room with a lock and key with his/her own phone in it. It's generally accepted courtesy not to eavesdrop on others' conversations.

However, when spouses wish to share their user account and profile, but simply wish to keep their email exchanges a bit more confidential (yes, even from each other), this is no longer possible. It seems very unloving to mandate that two people in a relationship must completely isolate their home computer work spaces with usernames and private passwords, simply because they want to keep their email a bit private. So once again, I agree with Danny. Microsoft has a longstanding history of adding useless bells and whistles to programs, so I commend them for making Windows Mail more simple to use, but in this case, it would have been wonderful had they given the user an option to password protect program usage and entry WITHIN the same user profile
