i dont have a windows disc (one was not supplied when pc purchased) and i had a few problems booting up windows, i managed to sort it but i am paranoid now incase it happens again as i don't have a boot disc so the above sounds perfect, but i don't have a clue where to start.
View 4 RepliesI've been running the PC since new with an adaptor for the monitor cable where this inputs to the PC. The technical side of it is beyond my knowledge but I was advised when I bought the PC that I had to use with adaptor with the secondhand monitor I have. Last year however the PC ceased to output to the monitor and by trial and error I realised that it would now only work without the adaptor.
More recently I began to experience booting problems -the PC sounds as if it is whirring into action as usual but then gets 'stuck' and there is no output whatsoever by way of error messages or anything else. The problem has been intermittent -sometimes it will boot normally other times not at all. I have run just about every HP diagnostic I could find and also the 'start up repair' (latter didn't appear to recognize a problem). The only test which failed was the PCI express status test (code MB152-15W.
Then lo and behold there was no output to my monitor a few nights ago so I used the adaptor I had dispensed with using last year and all was fine again; my suspicious mind lead me to run the PCI test again which now passed. Then tonight, again no output to the monitor -removed aforesaid adaptor again and all was well, ran the PCI test again and it failed. 2 Vista updates were automatically installed when I shut down last night but the content of them does not appear as if it would have any relevance to my problems
I have a Gateway laptop that has (or had ) Windows Vista Home Premium x86 installed. It was a dual core Turion with 2GB RAM. Anyway, here is my problem(s):
When the computer first comes on, right after the Gateway screen it tells me:
System Config Data Read Error.
That is right when it turns on. The BIOS detects the hard drive just fine.
The second problem is:
It tells me that
Windows Failed to start. File: BootBCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot config data.
I tried to do a system repair with the Vista CD. It took about 10 times for it to work. If I turned the computer off, there is a 50/50 chance it would do the same thing and not work. I was chatting with Gateway support yesterday and the tech told me that Windows could be messing with the BIOS. I find that strange because I thought onceWindows took over, the BIOS has nothing to do with how the computer operates.
Well, I tried doing a system repair and it does not detect the Windows install at all. I figured well, I'll do a clean install and get rid of all of the crap that Gateway puts on their computers. I did that. I was able to make a new partition and format the drive. Windows is able to see the drive, but it tells me that it does not meet the criteria for the install. It will not go any further then that.
Gateway is going to replace the hard drive and if that does not work, they are going to service the laptop because I've only had it for a few months now. It worked fine on Tuesday, on Wednesday it did not work at all. Even with the hard drive out, it still tells me System Config Data Read Error on the BIOS screen. Just wanted to see what everyone else thinks.
I'm leaning more towards a drive controller failure or BIOS problem. If that is the case, then the motherboard needs to be replaced,
i insalled vista ultimate and every time i go to restart the PC it will shout down but it won"t restart it stays on a black screen,i have to push the power button and turn it off and then press enter and it starts up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHello, I came accross your forum and decided to give it a try since I saw the helpful people posting in other threads. I've asked this question in many other forums but no one seems to know whats wrong. For a few days now my PC would start and get to a black screen with a blinking "_" in the upper left corner. I would turn it off then turn it on again and it would work. I figured I'd just clean the dust out of it and do a factory restore later on (which I did).
But since yesterday, I've had to do 4 or 5 restores to set it to factory condition. It gets to the point where I get to that screen and I wait 5 or 10 minutes, then the screens says "fail to boot disk, please insert disk" or something. so I place in the disk that my PC promted to make when i first got it (for restoring and repairing it and such) and then everything works again. but eventually with all the automatic updates i have to restart of course, and it starts up again fine, but
after about 2 or 3 restarts it fails again.........
I was wondering if someone might be able to help me. Basically my fiancee's laptop won't boot up anymore. It was playing up and crashed so she held down the power button and then turned it back on. It asked her if she want to boot normally, in safe mode or use the repair environment. We booted normally and nothing happened, nothing loaded up so restarted again and used the RE, went through everything and it still won't boot.
It comes up with an error message referring to external hardware such as a camera or mp3 player, which she hasn't connected, all she has is a bluetooth dongle which has been working fine (she has removed this and done the repair thing again too to no avail). The only thing she has done is log online and updated itunes.
She's run the repair program again and when it prompts to restart it gets to the green bar, does nothing for a while and then goes back asking to run the repair program or boot normally.
Incedently, when she presses F8, there is no option to select safe mode, only the repair program or boot normally.
We don't really want to do a fresh install, and besides I don't think she was given all the discs when she bought it, although I need to double check. The command prompt can be accessed though.
i was on Internet earlier today when i noticed that the videos were already completed buferring, but the videos were lagging; and firefox was performing kind of slow. i decided to re-start my computer. after re-starting the computer the logon process took extremely long, then an error message appeared: logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. failure - security options. i waited for the desktop to appear, then re-started again. but the perofrmance of the logon is still extremely slow. any suggestions?

1.) A week ago Brink said SP1 was not available through Windows Update( WU ), while at the same time .Joe indicated it was available in website and WU. ( I read those threads .)
2.) Someone said something about driver not upgraded and therefore it was not offered in the WU for those users. Does that mean I'm one of those?
3.) .Joe said that there are 2 prequisites for installing SP1 (it's from the same thread I mentioned .)
a) First prerequsite includes updates to the servicing stack, which I never saw it in WU.
b) 2nd includes updates required to reliably install or uninstall the service pack, which I never saw in WU either.
4.) We all saw the " horror stories " posted in this forum regarding problems during installing and after installing SP1. It got me worried.
5.) I still do not see SP1 offered in WU, optional or otherwise.
I got a new computer last year and it has Windows vista. That has Windows mail. My ISP is verizon but I don't have an email aaccount for verizon. The email address I get by defaut on Windows mail is Yahoo.com. I have no idea what the POP3 and SMTP are for my Windows mail account. I tried incoming.verizon.net which is verizon's POP3 and outgoing.verizon.net which is verizon's SMTP but nothing works. Some retarded error always comes up. Last night i saw a movie near my PC and left it open (most of the time i locked it when not in use), when suddenly right in front of my eyes - the PC locked him self! It was like i locked it myself - but alone! So, i run AVG scan, W Defender scan and another anti-spy program scan - nothing.
My UAC is on all the time. My Fire Wall is on all the time. I am the only user on this PC, and no one know my password. I check in the Event Viewer and there was no unusual activity. the locked activity was mentioned but in the normal way, as if I was the one that did it. Is it Vista failure? Or maybe someone broke into my PC?
I have a Studio laptop with Windows Vista 32 bit installed that has recently failed on every attempt for Windows Update. Just does not respond.

Due to the failure of one server, Windows Live ID logins were failing for some customers, and this increased the load on our remaining servers. We took the problematic server offline and brought a new server into rotation. We identified the root cause and fixed it in less than an hour, but it took a while to resolve the logjam that had built up in the meantime, and to redistribute the load to normal levels. As with all incidents like this, we will fully investigate the cause and will take steps to prevent this from happening again. Windows explorer decided not to respond and then said that it required restart, while in the process of restart explorer the laptop crashed with blue stop error screen. Afterwards, new startup screen came on saying the vista is unable to load and to chose either Startup repair or Resume Windows normally
now when I tried to use startup repair it was unable to fix problem and then tried to resume normally but this showed only a blank black screen. What is happening and how can I fix this?! Im trying to do this without formatting if possible since there are still important documents and programs that I need to backup!
went to get a new laptop and founds a nice mew Toshiba laptop (have to check model number) got the laptop home an started up fine worked fine also got thee system online and with all the anti virus set up (used the 90 day Norton trial) worked fine next day I stared the laptop up and the worked fine for a wile then went into a full crash with nothing responding forced a reboot look fine bios came up vista went to load the bar stuck and then restarted then kept doing this and no hard drive activity left the machine
and still stayed like this tried restore and start-up recovery as the pc was loading in safe mode the laptop did start the reload of the hard drive after that said was successful rebooted and did not want to load up ,took the pc back and checked the machine out they could not fix there machine the man told me the machine was not going to work and sated to fill out a Toshiba doa form stating that hard drive failure was the cause, that left me the option to change the laptop or get my money back and chose the get money back to see what i could get else were still looking I am thinking of getting a Sony vairo instead
I'm currently having some serious problems with my main desktop pc Q6600, 4gb Ram, Vista 64 Ultimate where when I turn the machine on I get a message saying: 'Windows failed to start, A recent hardware or software change might be the cause File: WindowsSysWOW64DriversPxHelp20.sys Status 0x0000359 info: Failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.' This problem started after I ran windows update a few days ago. its asked me to try putting the vista dvd in and run a repair, but that failed miserably. other things I would like to point out is that I am running a Raid (Stripe) on my system drive, so I cannot just take the discs out to recover the data. Is there anyway I can solve this issue whilst keeping the operating system intact? finally i'm running the OEM version of vista....I'm feeling pretty fed up as most of my important data is on these drives and ironically I was going to purchase a larger backup disc this month when I get paid.....

I get a Windows Update error message 8007000b. I ran the command prompt as administrator, typed in fsutil resource setautoreset true C:. And I get a message saying “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”
I have tried to download updates 1 at a time, turned off my anti virus And tried manual updates as well. My Error checking is not working “windows can’t check the disk while it’s in use” And schedule disk check does not work. The System File Checker tool gives the message “windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”. The windows memory diagnostic tool runs, reboots and does not display any results

View 9 Replies View RelatedTook out 2G ram as suggested - leaving 2G. Get through black screen with white bar "Windows loading files". Then blue screen with white horizontal bar for 35 minutes +/-. Then Install Now dialog box. Enter key code. Checks off "Copying files" Begins the "Expanding files" and goes to 11%.
Next message box: "Window cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Cord: 0x8007045D. (Reviewing this error in the knowledge base does not seem to speak to a new installation.)
I reviewed my MOBO instructions and I quote: "It is important to remember that before installing the driver CD that is shipped in the kit, you need to load you operating system." So what drivers does the Vista software think it needs? I spent more than 3 phone hours with Microsoft help and they had me putting in my Win 98 disc made a royal mess of my situation. I'm back now to the beginning and yet still no installation.
Since I have a new pc with Windows Vista I I can only send mail after I start or restart my pc. I can receive mail.

I've had no problems in the past, but earlier this evening it would restart itself while loading Vista (the green bar loading stage). I used the Startup Repair option from the Vista install disc, and the log shows it successfully repaired a corrupted system volume (exact wording may have been different). Now it boots as far as loading a black screen and the mouse cursor, but doesn't get to the Aurora (blue-Vista-Windows-logo-loading thing). I have tried subsequent Startup Repairs, CHKDSKs, Memory Diagnostic checks, all with no errors to report. Unfortunately, I disabled System Restore a while back... Something I now regret doing! At least I know what I'll be doing as soon as I get it running again! My system is an ASUS M2N-E motherboard, AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+, Corsair 2x1GB XMS2 RAM, Sapphire ATi Radeon 3850... And so on and so forth. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit as well.

However, it is not working so I was wondering if there was something I am not doing right here. I want to use the 32 bit for internet access and itunes and the 64 bit for gaming. I do not have any discs with the 64 bit OS on it either everything I have here is 32 bit.

I took the PC home and using my keyboard, mouse and monitor did some maintenance, upped the memory etc and took it back. It still froze at the logo. I replaced the keyboard and mouse and monitor one by one to no avail. Took everything home and it worked as a system, but at his house - still freezes. Is this an electrical problem - if so how could I find out? Their other computer works fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter booting up the computer the desktop freezes immediately. If it doesn't freeze up immediately I'll have some functionality, but minimal. I'll no longer have access to the internet (no network adapter present), can't run programs (they fail to open) or can't install programs/updates. I have even gotten a couple of Blue screen error messages such as: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
In safe mode with networking I do have access to the internet. When I try to download updates in safe mode I can't because Install shield will not work, or some other excuse. There are no restore points to restore to. There was a Windows Framework update on August 7th. I tried to uninstall it, but apparently it was never installed properly. No blue screens while in Safe Mode. I've been trying to problem solve this on my own, but with my limited computer repair skills I'm scared to try things.
If I want to boot from the CD drive on ocassions, but otherwise boot

i have a Sony Vaoi VGN-NS11J im not sure if its a 32-bit or 62-bit. one day i was browseing facebook when my computer froze after leaving it for like 30 mins it was still frozen so i had to turn it off by the button and i know that is bad. when i tried to turn it on again it just gave me the options safe mode safe mode with networking and the other safe mode and start windows normally so i just started normally it gets past the vaoi screen and then on the microsoft windows screen it just keeps loading for like 10 minutes then it restarts then it gave me new options start windows normally or launch startup repair so i launch startup repair which takes like 40 minutes just to get to the actually repair place then it gives me no operating system to repair its just blank ive tried all the booting options start from last known good boot or something like that safe mode wont work and when i disable restart when startup fails i get the blue screen of death it gives me this message. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

I have a pc running win xp media centre mp pc is dual core amd 64 bit 5200+ 2gb ram nvidia pcie 256mb graphics my hard disk is partitioned and xp is installed on the first partition I am trying to install Vista ultimate 64 bit on the second partition.
The vista installation will not complete I get an error when it is completing setup, saying that the pc shut down before installation was completed & the installation can not continue. The pc works fine under XP, are there any known installation issues with a Vista XP dual boot system?
