Winnt - System32 - Opens On Login

Jan 3, 2005

I am trying to get rid of a window that loads after users login to the network-win2k AD. Running Kix for the login script. The c:winntsystem32 window opens to the middle of the screen after some people log in. I have checked the machines with adware programs and the virus scan is up to date. I can not figureout why this window is still loading after login. There is no error generated in Event Viewer or problem created when it does this it is just very annoying.

Missing Winnt.sif File

Aug 22, 2008

I have some major problem with XP and repeatedly asked to Activate my Windows files, but it's impossible. I have no access any more to any MS products on my computer. So I want to reinstall XP (Dell Dimension 4700 desktop, with reinstallation XP disk that came with machine). I've tried several times and get message, "missing winnt.sif file." It's nowhere on my computer, on either of my two had drives. I've even tried with an upgrade disk that I bought for a different computer that I didn't use.

WINNT Folder Creat During Installation

Jun 20, 2005

I started my computer up this morning only to find -gasp- that my hard drive is fried. =D Isn't that freakin' wonderful? So I put a new one in, got my good ol' win2k disk out, and went to install it. Okay, so I've reformatted my hard drive, ran set up, and then I get to the "Windows will reboot in 15 seconds" crap.

Windows 2000 installation starts all over! It shows that there is in fact the WINNT folder installed on the hard drive, but it won't seem to get to the next step of setup. I tried chaning my boot order, still nothing. I remember I had this problem before, but I forgot how I resolved it. If I change the boot order priority to Hard Drive first, I get stuck in limbo. Nothing happens... I don't remember how I fixed it the first tim

KB Text Files In Winnt Directory?

Jun 13, 2005

On my windows xp pro machine in the winnt directory, I see about 20 or more KBnnnnnn.txt files (ie kb86783, kb873333, kb86185). They appear to be some kind of log file but I have not clue. Can they be deleted? Anyone know what they are?

I do have a problem with this laptop in that the first time I turn it on, it freezes at the windows splash screen and I have to turn it off and on again before it boots. This used to happen only when I used the modem, but now it's daily.

I'm attaching one of the files so you can see if it makes any sense.

Now that I look more at this directory, there are a bunch of Q files too. Can these be deleted? I'm attaching one of these too.

Admin Login Versus Profile Login

Nov 29, 2008

What happened is I just installed a new Hard Drive and a fresh windows install (XP Pro with Service pack 3). After all was installed it logged into my account (Me) which was my account with Administrator privileges. I did a series of windows updates now when I turn my computer on it goes straight to the Administrator account and not my account (me). So I have to log off or switch accounts from Admin to Me. I just want it to login to Me all the time. So I am not smart enough to figure it out.

Gets To Login Screen But After Login It Slows Down

Nov 21, 2006

I'm using Win XP sp2 and I usually leave my computer on 24/7. This morning I tried to open a file but it never opened. I went into the task manager to see if its even processing and it was there but the ccapp was taking all the cpu. So i tried to shutdown and restart. After that windows boots up to the login screen just fine but when i click on my account it take a long time to show my wallpaper. I can pull up task manager and the cpu isnt being used. the hdd is only accessed in little bursts. After a while the start menu pops up. any keyboard commands like to bring up win explorer takes a long time and all the commands pop up in a big burp of of command executions. I'm trying to reach system restore but cant. I'm not sure how to get into safemode with this system because just after post when f8 is usually used to bring up the menu the system opens a boot drive selection screen. During the RAM tests during post theres text stating press del to enter bios and f8 to enter boot drive selection so im not sure how to get to safemode now.

System32 And Ntdll.dll

Jul 29, 2009

I am trying to copy/paste a clean ntdll.dll into the Windows/System32 folder and to no surprise I cannot as the message I get is another resource is using that file. How can I determine what resource(s) and if so, am I able to disable it in order to replace that file?

I'm doing so as per Windows explorer errors that nobody can seem to resolve and I really dont want to reinstall Windows, I just did it about 7 or 8 months ago.

System32 Folder Is Huge

Aug 11, 2008

I happen to notice the size of the WindowsSystem32 folder to be a surprising 892 MB. Checking the size of the Windows folder showed a 383 GB size on disk. Aren't these numbers a tad on the large side? Is my system failing to purge trash and temp files by attaching some strange extention on files? Are log files ever labled as anything other than .log? Or temp files ever something besides .tmp? Fellow tech freaks, I await thy wisdom. If I'm just being paranoid, and my OS folders aren't bloated, please pass on anything I can do to keep an eye out for commonly overlooked bad habits of windows xp sp2 including file and folder build-up, leading to sluggish start-up and general degrading of simple operations.

16 Bit Subsystem - File To System32

Apr 16, 2005

I've tried to reload a couple pieces of software that used to run fine. I get this error message In top left hand corner of error window it says 16 bit Windows Subsystem Then lower down it says: C:windowssystem32autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "Close" to terminate the application. I have Windows XP and both programs (Microsoft Home Publishing and Canon Zoombrowser) had worked fine for a couple years. For the heck of it I even dragged a copy of the above name file to system32 to see if that would help. It didn't.

Winchat - System32 Directory

Aug 12, 2002

There is an application in XP that allows networked users to to communicate with each other. It is a very simple program located in the Windows System32 directory. A search for "winchat" will also bring it up. This program can be very usefull to users that work in large office complexes and need to deliver a message to another individual quickly and efficiently. This application also has a real time chat screen, so you can see the other person typing. I have tested this program on 2 computers running XP Pro, not XP Home.1 start, search, "winchat" (or find in Windows, System 32 directory)2 right click and select send to desktop (for easy opening)3 run the program4 choose dial button at the top5 choose the computer of the person on the network who you wish to talk to. 6 both users must agree to connect to each other to talk.

Corrupt Or Missing System32 File

Jul 28, 2005

I have been getting Norton (Corporate, installed by someone else) notificatons for a few weeks about a Trojan (cache.cachekit) and Norton could not get rid of it. Now I cant boot up and it tells me my file(System32/system/config) is missing or corrupt. I was thinking it was my Trojan I couldnt get rid of, what do you think? Also, my OS was installed by someone else so I didnt have my own disk, however I have ordered one and it should come in a week. If it is my elusive Trojan, for one, how do I get rid of it for good, and also, when I get my disk I dont know exactly what to do to fix the computer. I cant bring it up in safemode either. I have never installed a OS, but I have installed other software-on a properly functoning computer that is. Do I absolutely have to wipe my hardrive clean, and if so, how do I do it?

Is there any way I can do this without the CD?
