Jun 25, 2010
i brought windows XP home SP2 oem and i recently tired to reformat but I broke my cd.... now my friends have windows XP home SP3 & Windows XP Pro could I use theres to install on my pc then and use my cd key or does it have to be the same version?
My dad's computer, which has had SP2 installed since it was released to public will no longer browse the net with IE since a recent update.I decided to reformat and reinstall XP for him. All was going well until I got to the point where I installed SP2.After I installed SP2, the problem came back where he was no longer able to browse the internet.I uninstalled SP2 and the browsing is fine again. He tells me this happened after the last Auto Update. Anyone here of a similar problem happening to anyone else?I would like to get SP2 installed again on his computer.

I have a problem with my pc. Can anybody help me? I normally save my all works and files in my documents folder in my windows xp OS. I have a username to log in to my pc.underthis user name I had made my documents private. One day to do some work I logged in to the PC as an administrator. Here I delete my user account and created with same name again. But now I have lost all my documents. I can see it's there in my documents and settings but access denied because of the folder made PRIVATE. Can you help me to get my documents back?
I switched from Windows98 to Windows XP SP2 about 7 months ago using an "upgrade" version without any problems. Two weeks ago my motherboard overheated and failed after a fan broke down. I have therefore just installed a new motherboard and newer processor. All drives and other bits and pieces are the same. The BIOS recognises everything but Windows won't start. I get a message suggesting that this might be due to new hardware or software and gives me a number of options to pick from - Safe Mode; Safe Mode with Network; Safe Mode with promt; Last Known Good Configuration; Start Normally.
None of these seem to work. The system either reboots immediately and goes back to the message or else I get a long list of files flashed up momentarily starting: multi(0)disk(0)rdiskpartition1windowssystem32xxxxxxxxx The list appears too briefly to read and then the system reboots before taking me back to the message.
In the past, I have used the S-video port (with RCA adapter) in a dual view setup with my TV. I recently reinstalled Windows XP and now I can't get the secondary display (the TV) to work correctly. I just get a bunch of black & white lines moving up the screen (looks like bad reception/static on a TV). The weird thing is that the TV displays everything fine during the bootup process, including the loading screen with the Windows XP logo. Full color and everything. It's when Windows actually starts that the TV freaks out. Another weird thing is if I use nVidia's TV setup Wizard and select "Span," the image on the TV actually stabilizes. But I am forced to keep a low resolution on the monitor (which wasn't the case before I reinstalled XP), and as soon as I make any other changes the TV goes back to freaking out.
A friend of mine in a craft site created a document in WORKS. There were problems for others on that site opening it that have WORD and not WORKS. Is it necassay to have WORKS to receive WORKS files??
dvd rom is not showing up in my computer with xp. if I go to add hardware its there but shows as drivers are missing or corrupt. I've uninstalled and let windows reinstall but to no avail. I can boot from the rom so i know it works
Computer is in Standby, I click enter, then Internet Explorer but I can't get the cursor to appear, then I get the Internet Explorer is not responding message.
This is not a hardware problem as it just seems to have happened to both my home and work pc's. The exact same issue, the F5 key no longer "refreshes". The only thing I can think of that has been installed recently on both PC's is XP SP3.
No matter what flashdrive I plug into my PC , it does not work. Mp3 players or any usb drive does not work. I can see the device in device manager and it does not show any conflicts or problems . I cannot access the drive either through my computer or windows explrer. It is as if the drive is there but it is not able to work because of some problem.
I have problems setting up RD on a computer running Windows XP professional over the internet while everything works fine over lan. This is the same for VNC. On Windows 2000 computers vnc works fine I have gone through the page http://theillustratednetwork.mvps. [...] oting.html with the following results:1) Firewall is turned off (windows and other software firewalls, on my router NAT is turned on).2) In NAT on the router de ports TCP 3389 (RD) and TCP 5900 (VNC) areforwarded.3) My ISP has assigned a static IP.4) Logging Remote Desktop Connection information > only local logons asrefound (lan), remote (internet) logons are not found in the log. 5) Port reporter >
I am about to get rid of norton system works and would like to knowabout some alternatives.I have been using norton systemworks for years and also use AVG as asecondary virus checker.I have sourced some alternatives for most of the utilities i.e zone alarm, may try avast (instead of AVG), regclean. But what I will miss is the 'one button checkup' from norton that scans your system and detects any probs before fixing them. Is there any other free program that do this?If anyone has any other suggestions as to what alternatives to use (preferably free!) instead of Norton System works.
having just installed xp pro sp2 on a new hard disc and while in the proccess of installing my usual programs i somehow managed to get a bug in ie, and i now find that i cant open ie, i use opera, avant, & firefox which all work fine but i would like to be able to use ie when/if nessary. I dont know if i can repair or reinstall ie
I've installed Windows XP SP2 Fresh after I had some other hardware problems. Everything seemed to work fine until I managed to get into Windows. The OS refuses to read ANY dvd/cd that I put inside. If instead, I boot to Safe-Mode, the DVD-RW works fine. Of course I tried to switch the DVD-RW with another one but the results were the same.
I changed the computer which is running Windows 2000 server from a domain to a work group and then rebooted. When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized. Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.
I am running a computer with Windows XP SP2. When I put a card in my card reader it used to automatically open the picture download wizard. When I put in a DVD it automatically opened Power DVD. When I plugged in my MP3 player it automatically opened its associated software. Now, nothing seems to auto start.
since i got XP, my microphone no longer works. It says that it doesn't detect it and that I should plug it in but I'm 100% sure its plugged in, Ive checked. For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.
I'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google
So I can't update windows or anything. I can't gt automatic updates to start. When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.
About 5 hours ago my pc crashed, since rebooting my usb keyboard no longer works when it reaches windows login. I'm completely lost with this and it's infuriating me. - I'm running windows xp - Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago - There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine - There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports. - The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine - I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system. - The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly. - The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
My Inspiron 8100 laptop had a hard drive failure - click of death. After replacing the HD (installed with XP and one I know works) the system boots up but very slowly. I should say that it did the same thing before replacing the HD when I was trying to run a disc recovery CD.It's slow right from the BIOS POST - which took about 15mins, and right on throught the WIN XP startup. Took 1hr to get to login and over 2 hours to load system programs. It seems to freeze for 20secs then work for a brief moment. EG I have to hold down a key for 20secs, then 1 character will appear. This brief period of activity coincides with a flicker of the HD activity LED. This was the same pattern even when I checked the BIOS setup on first booting up - so I don't think this is a Windows issue.Running a dignostic is going to be difficult as it would take days to install and run at this rate.
Pc crashes the internet all the time, he is working on a ACER Laptop, everyone else gets internet just fine, it is his laptop that won't get it all the time, and when he does get it, it sometimes only lasts for up most to about 3 to 4 hours. if he is that lucky.could this be an internal problem? or could a file have been corrupted somewhere in the system?right now he is running a disk scan to see if it picks up anything but i don't think it will.
turn on my computer, nothing loads. internet explorer will not open any internet pages despite me being connected to the internet. all programs seem to freeze. ive tried everything, ive cleaned history cookies etc. and ran norton, ran anti spy. ive done it all. the only way i can get things going back to normal is if i system restore. something is obviously going wrong.
I use my PC mainly for e-mail, interent, and Microsoft Office no serious gaming or video usage. Someone recommended a registry cleaner to boost performance. Do they work? The particular one mentioned to me was Advanced Registry Optimized 5.
i made a resume using ms works and every time i try 2 send it it comes up the host smtp could not b found port 25 then under that it seys the host pop3 cannot b found port 110 socket error 11001 error #0x800ccc0d
computer constructed by a computer company Comtex, windows xp, 512 ram, 40 gb. It has been running slow and freezing up some, today while trying to run spyware, it is slower than molasses, over 7 hours and still not done. In addition, I can not open any internet windows or access it at all from my user id , and yes I am over loaded with programs and photos on my poor harddrive. So after restarting it about 30 times, I try my son's identity and I can access the internet, last night IE was almost impossible, but firefox was better. I did download a file from photobucket, which I did not install and then I uninstalled it. I also have uninstalled and reinstalled yahoo messenger a couple times, thinking that was freezing it up, I added the google toolbar just recently and the ym, seems to conflict anytime I download a new program, so as of now It is uninstalled.
I updated my Windows XP to the newest version and now my mouse and keyboard don't work.Booting into the BIOS is the only place where my mouse and Keyboard will work. Any thoughts to what Happened and how do I get access to my Windows XP and more importantly----my files!!?
XP started behaving strangely-nothing in Explorer would work. I tried to do a system restore but the computer crashed whilst trying to do this. I had to reset the computer and after log-in there were no icons and you couldn't open anything. Decided to do a repair install using original XP CD. This was okay until it got to 'installing devices' (about 35 mins left), it started asking for files such as 'sunbelt counterspy.msi' (which I don't even want it to install) and won't complete the installation as I can't locate the files it wants
