View 1 RepliesThe my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhich is better?, Norton ghost, or Norton save and restore? also which if either, is compatible with Norton go-back?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm going to try a system restore and I need to close all open programs. Does this mean I need to close Norton Antivirus, Spybot and Ad-Aware too? What about programs that run in the background that you don't see? I've never worried about this when installing software--just left them running--but I don't want to mess up with system restore. I have lots of disc space and plenty of memory, if this makes any difference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was attempting to install Norton System Works 2006, it failed and gave me some instructions to fix the issue which consisted of downloading 3 tools and running them to clean the failed install, and then try the install again. I tried to reboot first (I don't recall if I was instructed to or not!) and now it goes through the motions of starting up...bios screen, Norton Go Back Screen (new), XP loading screen, then I get a screen that says "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK" and it restarts

View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving just updated to the Antispam version of NIS my System Restore now refuses to operate properly. I can open it (sometimes) but as soon as I try to do anything with it it hangs. Most other programs are not affected except as I close IE now, I get an error message "The instruction at "1x127cfb80" referenced memory at"0x0215ad58". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program." This may or may not be related.I tried removing NIS 2005 and System Restore came back to normal but having reinstalled - the problem now re-occurs. Symantec website is useless and I cannot find any telephone numbers.Has anyone else had a similar problem?

View 4 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....
I have Windows XP and have the windows firewall on. I also have Norton 2005 Systemworks. Funny thing happened, I turned off the windows firewall under control panel, windows firewall. But when I open control panel, security center, it says there is a firewall on. I don't beleive I have a firewall with Norton Systemworks

I'm on a home network (cable) with ethernet and using Norton 360 for the protection suite. I also have Webroot SpySweeper and all udpates have been completed. All current scans have been done as well. MS updates were installed via auto update and now IE 7 gives me the error "IE cannot display the webpage" which stops me from getting to any other website (so I can download Mozilla ). I have gone out to the MS site and run through the troubleshooting options there:1) Can't view another webpage2)Network diagnostics reveal no problems3)Reset the modem/routers4)Deleted Browsing History5)Used the No Add-Ons Mode6)Disabled Norton 7)Tested the connected in safe mode, still got the error8)No third party conflicts9)Checked the device manager for issues, and found none10)Finally, reset the IE defaults, rebooted and still got the stupid error
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a quick search and read through the first 2 pages of hits but didn't find anything relating to my problem. If there's a solved thread, please point me to it.I'm running W2K and when my Norton subscription ran out I decided to get Norton Internet Security 2006. After installing it I noticed that it would act funny any time there was a hardware change. If I shut down my PC and swapped the RAM sticks around, or installed/removed a hard drive, when I went to start up the PC again it would reboot. It'll even do it if I forget and leave a USB cable in without anything attached at the other end. At first I couldn't figure out what was causing it, but I didn't mind much because it would just reboot once and that was that. But over the last few months it's gone from once to 2-4 times on average, and longer on occasion. It was through this process that I realized the reboot happens as Norton is loading.
Well, today I was having some issues with my video acting up I suspect it's from a failing memory stick so I opened up the case and removed the offending stick. But when I started it back up it wouldn't stop rebooting. I continued working on my work laptop and it continuously rebooted for about half an hour before I said forget it and booted into safe mode.Unfortunately, I needed to do some printing and of course printing doesn't work in safe mode. So I thought maybe I'd uninstall Norton it gave me an error saying it couldn't uninstall in safe mode. Very funny, I thought. since Norton is what's keeping me from being ABLE to boot into normal mode.

I recently had a problem with NPF 2005 that resulted in my uninstalling the program using the it's uninstall program. When I tried to reinstall the program, I discovered that the installer would not run. I have tried various methods to start the installer from the NPF 2005 install CD but nothing worked. The Symantic knowledge base suggested copying the CD to the hard drive and installing from the hard drive. This did not work either. I thought that perhaps the setup program has been corrupted so I tried the CD in a computer running Windows ME. The installer came to life and was ready to proceed with the installation. I did not attempt to complete the Installation, I only wanted to determine if the setup program had been corrupted. Does anyone have any idea why XP might not allow the program to run

Also Norton Antivirus renewed annually/Norton Personal Firewall (2002), Mozilla Firefox.Up to now, have had no problems with the viruscan or the firewall, but I had to renew annual subscription to Antivirus and unable to download new Subscription from Symantec website (got error report with no explanation after putting in card details) so went and bought a disk of it (2007 version) from PC World. Was prompted to remove Symantec Personal Firewall when I started installation
I did remove it, with reluctance, thinking it might be difficult to reinstall the firewall and it is I have the original Symantec firewall disk, 2002 version, which came with PC. Anyway, I successfully installed the Viruscan 2007, then put in the disk for the Firewall to reinstall it.installation of firewall got message box with a red cross: NORTON INTEGRATOR: FAILED TO REGISTER FILE TYPES No other explanation,I did not know what else to do, I clicked it, it went way, and the installation proceeded. After all the installation tasks completed, I was asked to restart PC. My computer froze at that point. Would not close. Eventually I switched it off at mains, then restarted it in the usual way. The Norton Personal Firewall icon shows up and when I open it, it is not Enabled, neither can I get it to change to being enabled by clicking the button
Can anyone tell me how to remove this trojan horse.
