It doesn't seem like any of the posts that I've seen have the same detailed characteristics as my situation. Whenever my computer is started and logged on, a few minutes go by, then the message "unable to launch restart.exe" pops up. Once we hit the OK button, everything seems to be fine. So it's not a big problem, but it's kind of a nuisance.
As I said previously, I have read MANY other posts regarding this error, but it seems everyone was having much more serious problems regarding this message. This computer seems to run just fine after we hit the OK button on the error message. FYI... this is an HP computer, running XP Home Edition, P4 2.93 Ghz, 1 Gig ram, Ad-aware is installed, and Norton Internet Security 2006, both of which are fully up-to-date and scans have been performed. All standard windows disk utilities have also been run. I don't know what else is appropriate to tell you. I do have Hijack This installed and have run it once... but at the time I wasn't registered for any of these help forums. If needed I can run it again and save the log file for someone to assist me.
I am working on a friends computer running XP PRO. When shutting down ie, clicking the Turn Off button, Windows always reboots as if Restart was selected.
I restored my laptop after a crash and re-installed everything.About the only new program I added was the beta version of MS Anti-Spyware.Whether it's that, or some setting I'm missing either in XP or Outlook, I can no longer open my browser from within Outlook including not only links, but online help, etc.
Sometimes this computer will start, sometimes it wont When it doesnt, the On button just flashes orange, when it should be solid green. Sometimes it will start up and get to the log on screen and then just shut down and flash orange. It works fine when it does turn on. Iv been through the dell help and support stuff and that doesnt help
Have XP Home Edition with all current updates. Do not have toolbars locked. By mistake, moved the whole Quick Launch Taskbar and lost it. When I went to Start > Properties > and enabled Show Quick Launch, I got it back with all my icons. The problem is that they are no longer displayed in the order that I want and I can not drag them to change the order. Sometime in the past, I was able to drag them to change their rder. Again, I do not have the toolbars lock set. I went to my application dataMicrosoftIEQuick Launch and changed the sort order of the folder but it did not change the display order when I rebooted the system.
All of a sudden, in the last couple of days, I find that I have to go through my Start>Turn off Computer > Restart twice in order for the computer to restart. Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.

I downloaded some drivers from Canon for my scanner, which included the software. But when I tried to install them, the drivers installed fine, but the software didn't.Now in my system icon tray I have an icon saying "LaunchPad Shell",just sitting there doing nothing. And in device manager,it says I have a scanner that is working properly, but without the other stuff,I can't use the scanner.I un-installed everything and tried from scratch
when i go to Start,Run,type msconfig, i get the error message:Windows cannot find msconfig.Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file click the Start button and then click Search; same thing happens ,I do have msconfig in the computer and the path is: C:/WINDOWS/pchealth/helpctr/binaries. Same path for the Help & Support. I `m aware that there is not reference(or key)for the above subjects(msconfig-Help & Support) in the registry and i`m not confident enough to alter it, so
EXTREMELY ANNOYING problem I'm encountering... I'll turn on my PC and 1/3 times nothing will launch. What I mean is, I'll click on a shortcut and the little cursor will display the thinking symbol as if it's aunching, my HD (or cpu?) will click, then nothing. Nothing happens. Every single application is like this, including a Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I can't even launch task manager, or My Computer... NOTHING. Everything that is open currently works fine though, I can browse places in firefox, change songs in winamp etc. I just can't launch new applications or shutdown my computer. I'll go to start -> turn off computer -> shut down, and nothing happens. I have to manually force restart my PC everytime this happens and it's really getting bothersome. I don't know what to do guys or what could be causing this, I really don't want to format
I've had this problem for a couple of days. Every time I start a game like portal or team fortress 2 svchost.exe starts eating cpu. This goes on for a couple of minutes and suddenly svchost goes back to normal cpu usage.
I have 7 different svchost.exe processes in my task manager, 3 system, 2 local service and 2 network service.
I've downloaded process explorer and the svchost that takes all the cpu has the PID 1412, dunno if that info makes any difference but sounds important.
I've searched for svchost.exe to see if there are any more that could be possible viruses but i only found the one in /windows/system32/ I have no idea what could be causing this problem... Also, I apologize if there already is a solution for this in another topic. Didn't find any when I searched.
i tried to move firefox (safemode) to my quick launch bar and 2 things were created, a shortcut and something else. i deleted the shortcut but i can delete the other one. heres what it says.
cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk
Microsoft wouldn't give me any kind of answer. They just blamed it on the manufacturer. So, here goes: I've been trying for 2 days now to get the windows xp activation wizard to launch. I've tried the "accessories>system tools" shortcut, as well as the "run> oobe/msoobe /a" method countless times. Neither work. The pointer becomes an hourglass for 2 seconds like it's going to open the wizard, but nothing happens. I've opened the task manager, and sometimes the "msoobe.exe" process will appear for no more than half a second before disappearing
explorer kept hanging and crashing so I decided to uninstall Explorer 7, when I did, it never completed the uninstall. Said some files weren't found and couldn't complete it. NOW I cant get it to load at all the only browser I can get to work is the one on my real player. When it tries to launch I get this box that comes up and says c:WINDOWS/system32cmdexe I cant get the sytem restore to work either. Tho every scan I've run syas the system is fine. IT is not obviously. I am running XP home edition service pack2, with all the latest updates
I have windows xp and it has a hibernate mode. Well someone put it in that mode and when I wanted to launch windows the cursor is frozen and I can't get out of the hibernate mode. What can I do to get rid of hibernate and launch windows?
Someone at work deleted my Quick Launch Button which is located at the bottom of the taskbar (also called Show Desktop button).. My quick launch tab is checked so it's not that. How do I get my Quick Launch Button back? I don't know how anyone can function without that Button.. I love that button! I Right Mouse the taskbar.. go to Toolbars and yes that Quick Launch Tab is checked.. they actually removed it and deleted it..
I have just got another computer running XP home. I am not able to drag and drop a shortcut to the quicklaunch bar. And yes I have the bar unlocked and quicklaunch checked. I can't imagine why I don't have this function. When I drag to the quicklaunch bar I don't see the usual black line on the left of the icon.I can drag and drop on the desktop all day. Any suggestion as to what the problem might be? I have never had this problem in eight years I have had a computer.
I was hijacked, cleaned everything out and got my browser up and running again. Now, in a bizarre twist, every single app i have automatically opens with Notepad. Everything--even RUN--opens with notepad. Yahoo, Run, Norton, all antispy programs, turbo tax, you name it.When I boot up, instead of having a bunch of programs load and sit on my toolbar, i just get 10 Notepad windows of spaghetti. Hence, even run commands are not going to cut it.
My quick launch toolbar is showing only 3 programmes. If I want to see more programmes of quick lauch bar. I have to click the small arrow on quick launch bar( see the first and second attachements with my post). I want to know is there some way that I can see more than just 3 progeammes on this bar without clicking the arrow? Secondly can I choose which programmes to appear all the time on quick launch bar( see first attachement) and which programmes should be hidden and will only appear when I click the small arrow( see second attachement).
Just reinstalled XP Pro on my laptop (ATI graphics), and have set the taskbar settings to small icons. The quicklaunch buttons, for some reason, are disproportionately large, though.I know that before they were nice and tidy (before I had to reinstall), so know that it IS possible to have something that takes less space than these do. Is there some separate setting somewhere else for quicklaunch button size that I am missing?
I normally use a single-height taskbar. But everytime I add the Quick Launch toolbar to the taskbar, the taskbar doubles in height. I tried grabbing the dividers and sliding them, but they don't move.
Previously I had my computer setup so that the QUICK LAUNCH toolbar would display program icons when my computer was started. Now, whenever I reboot, the toolbar disappears and I have to right click on the task bar, select toolbars, and select Quick Launch. Any ideas why this may be happening or how to prevent this from being removed each time. I tried locking the taskbar, but that didn't help.
I think all of this started after I downloaded some windows updates, and it stopped making anything on my quick launch menu to work. So I deleted most of them, but kept show desktop and outlook express. I fiddled with the toolbar settings (address, links, windows media player etc.)and now I've lost my quick launch option entirely! everytime I try to check that toolbar, it closes the menu and nothing happens. How do I get quick launch back?
My PC Specs, Dual Core, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 9600GT. Whenever most of the games I try to play, they crash at their launch. Its not with games like GTA Episodes from LC or PoP:Forgotten Sands, games such as NFS:Carbon also has these problems. I remember that games such as NFS:Carbon used to run even on my old pc which didn't even had any graphic card.
i just installed windows xp and my quick launch buttons are about 4 times the size they should be is this new in sp2? can i change it? because it's really annoying
I did do the online scan with TrendMicro and Panda and found alot of adware and trojans which I deleted. The Windows Update site will launch but I get the 80070424 error everytime until I run the "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll"!. Then the updates will DL but not install, The problem is I have to run this "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" after every reboot. The Security Center also reports that Automatic Live Update is off when in fact it is enabled. The above string fixes this but next reboot it goes back I downloaded the file and tried to run but NOTHING happens. The same with AVG or adaware. These just do not launch Other programs like Word and Excel launch fine. What is this! I am now at a breaking point
I have quite a bit of initial background information that really now only boils down to a fairly small problem, but It is all relevant information. A few days ago my computer started getting stop error messages, usually while browsing internet explorer. Sometimes they would just shut down IE, other times completley crash windows, causing an immediate re-boot, rather than the blue screen of death. Anyways, it would boot back up, saying it recovered from a serious error, cause by a device driver, or stop error. One of the remedies it listed was trying to do a repair of windows XP, which I ended up doing. It was only after I did this repair that I realized remembered what was causing the errors
