I open Windows Explorer from Start button>Right Click.Sometime, I would like to select multiple folders in the Win Explorer while holding Ctrl or Shift Key.It never worked. While selecting next folder, the first folder always becomes unselected.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning WindowsXP with SP2. Word 2003. OE6. IE6. Have HP 1210 all-in-one and Canon BJC2010. Both work fine. Problem when I wish to print a document, or e-mail text, or whatever, and click on ctrl+P, or use File menu, or whatever, I always get the printer I do not want to use. I use the HP for scanning and copying, particularly in color, and prefer the Canon for regular printing from Word or OE or IE. But somehow each time, I get the HP rather than the Canon. Now on the window for printing they always have a list of options, so this is not a crisis, just a request to lower the nuisance titre a bit. There should be a place to go to select a default printer.

When I go into properties to select a picture, all the options are highlighted and I cannot deselct them. In Windows Explorer, when I right click, set picture as backround, nothing happens.I've tried restarting and setting the theme to default, but even then the default wall paper doesn't show up.However, when I try to restart my computer, or turn it off, right before the screen changes to the logoff display, the old background image I had set shows up, but only for less than a second.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell D610 laptop running WinXP Pro. The screen is an SXGA+ (1400x1050 resolution). I have a docking station at home and use a 19" wide screen LCD monitor (1440x900). My docking station at work has a 23" wide screen LCD monitor (1920x1200). The laptop and home 19" monitor look good at normal size (96 DPI) setting. However, the large 23" monitor needs the Display DPI Setting increased to large size (120 DPI) for my old eyes.
The problem is having to constantly change between normal and large display DPI settings. This change requires a reboot to take effect. Is there a program or script available that will run at startup and allow me to choose the DPI setting? Even better would be a startup script that detects which monitor is in use and sets the display DPI accordingly.
I accidentally turned off the tap to select feature on my lap top, does anyone know how to turn it back on?

I have checked all my connections and tried it every which way. I have went inside and out of the BIOS and still no luck. I literally have to click the minimized window three times before I can get it to come on top.The first time I click it shows the minimized window depressed then highlighted, the 2nd time I click it goes through the motion of minimizing an already minimized window (you actually see it minimizing); and the 3rd time I click brings the window to the front.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI boot my computer up and its fine till it reaches the logon screen. There are no users to select to logon let alone the shutdown button. Now I have changed the logon screen from its default one, however, It worked fine for almost a year... so i really doubt thats the problem.
Due to this problem I Installed XP Home [running as dual boot] so that i may fix the problem. XP Home works fine and i tried to replace the XP Pro Logonui.exe with the XP Home one. I also went into the recovery console and replaced the ntldr and ntdetect files. None of these worked and i still have the same problem. I would like to avoid reformatting simply because I have vital information that i would like to keep.
Turn on my computer, it takes me to a screen which gives me a number of options like safe mode and start windows normally and a time limit of about 27-30 seconds. Whenever I choose something, whether it be safe mode or to start windows normally, my computer decides to just restart and the whole process repeats over and over again. Does anyone know what the problem is? I've tried connecting and reconnecting the computer, checking for loose wires and even keeping the computer off for a couple of days, nothing seems to work.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great. I've looked in alot of websites about how to solve this problem but I can't find any solution to the problem without the cd. I can't bypass it by doing any of the F8 options. It has a single account named Owner that he clicks on which usually allows him to log-on, he never had a password. He clicks the icon, it appears to start logging on then suddendly it will say logging off, saving settings, then returns us back to the main log-on screen.I tried to start in safe mode by pressing F8 while the computer is intially turning on, but all the labtop does is make this loud beeping noise and starts up normally. No screen appears for me to select safe mode or anything.

Whenever i double click a drive (besides the one with windows installed on it) windows asks me what program i want to use to open the file. It does not let me select the box "always use this program to open files like this" so i cannot select explorer and save that setting. I've been through the file associations and it has "open" set as default. Tried to change this to "explore" but that didn't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop. Recently, I cannot select the standby icon from my shutdown menu (i.e. it appears, but is not highlighted). While this does not seem like such a serious issue, I am concerned it may be a sign of a larger problem. I have not had a crash however, so I do not know why the sudden change. I would prefer not to do a system restore, if there is another option. I also could not see any simple solution in the power management settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some unknown reason, I can't change my desktop picture. When I go into the Display Settings, everything in the Desktop tab is grayed out. I can still use the customize desktop button and the position drop-box, but I can't acutally select an image.
I've tried going through the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem , but none of this helped. I had at one stage lost all the tabs, but I managed to retrieve them through the registry. It's not urgent that I get the desktop tab working, it's just really annoying.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen booting up (XP), I get to the screen where I select the user name and enter the password. Then I get my usual wallpaper screen but no icons, start button, task bar, tray etc etc. I can't right click on the screen.
I CAN do Crtl+Alt+Del and get a run prompt up and browse the various drives (and even run software through this, e.g. internet) but the desktop is always completely blank. I have tried Safe Mode and restore last known good etc but neither works both same result, get to wallpaper but no icons.

I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window.

When I turn my computer on this morning, it started to boot, but after few seconds, the long message appears, something like: "We are sorry for inconvenience but Windows can not start... " and it tells me to either boot into Safe mode, use last configuration, or start Windows normally. The last option is highlighted. But after that, blue screen flashes for just a moment (long enough to see there is some text but not long enough to read it), and then it goes back to start... detecting hard drive and stuff. It keeps looping like that forever. I tried to go to safe mode, but the same things happen. It goes back to start and then a "Start Windows normally" is Highlighted again.

Time going by, I have noticed I have installed quite some applications on my computer.I have Win XP SP2, Intel Pentium4 CPU - 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM (SSD), ATI Radeon X300 Series. I notice that booting is taking really long after I select my user account and I hear a lot of hard disk activity. I believe this can be because virtual RAM is activated, but, before going to buy some extra RAM (and SSD memories are not so cheap), I wondered if I could have fixed the issue through some start up software, or some better organisation of the user accounts (e.g. one account for gaming, one for video processing) so that only the requested processes would be loaded each time.
