Boot Up - Microsoft Auto Updates - Restore To Already Installed OS?
Mar 23, 2005Ive only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
System Restore - Bold Date Available - Microsoft's System
May 27, 2008I am having a problem using system restore.The only "bold" date available, as an earlier date, is today's date.I have tried all 5 methods from Microsoft's system restore help and suppport page for WindowsXP, to no avail.Each tells me that System restore is working.I used the one date (today) that was avaialable and it "restored" without a problem.How can I get the calendar to show an earlier date?

Jan 6, 2005Aside from Paint lagging, the rest of my computer is kinda slow lately, and there are a bunch of SVCHOST.exe's that seem to be running when i look at the task manager. I killed the one that was taking up the most memory usage and the computer was slightly better... in Paint, I could actually use the Pencil tool without lagging, but the scrolling and paintbucket was laggy still.

Paint/calculator/games All Gone

Screen Shots Using Paint
Jul 3, 2009I key ctrl/alt/and prtscn to cache screen shots. I can no longer save to Paint. The pencil icon is on first instead of the select. It will not show the paste button on the drop down menu only the select all.

I typed "C:WINDOWS/system32/calc.exe" into the "Run" command. The message box that opened read like this: "Windows cannot find C:WINDOWS/system32/calc.exe." The message box then suggests to "....click the Start button, and then click Search." "Search" could not find the file. But it was accessible before from the Start-> Menu->All Programs->Accessories.

Aug 7, 2005The problems we're having don't sound very similar, but they all happened around the same time.
Internet explorer only works if we put in the full address, with the "http://www." and everything. If we try to leave any part of the address out, it takes several minutes and then normally tells us that the page could not be found.
Accessing the "My Computer" for the first time takes several minutes. We've had to add direct links to all of our drives in order to get any work done.
When we open up pictures, they show up in "Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album" just fine. Then we get a window that says "Server Busy. This action could not be completed because the other program is busy." It doesn't matter whether we chose "Switch to" or "Retry," the window just keeps popping up again.
In addition, our computer is no longer able to communicate with our printer, but if I remember correctly, that problem occured before the ones I've listed above. I only include it here for completeness.
I've run McAfee, at least one on-line virus scanner, and Ad-aware on this system. None have turned up any problems. I've been suspicious of the "CT*" programs, but besides some coincidental evidence, I don't really know anything.

All Desktop Icons Have Paint Logo And Won't Work
Apr 26, 2010I'm trying to clean up a friend's PC that had Antivirus XP on it. All his desktop icons got changed to the paint logo and the links for them are broken. Also, when I try to create a new desktop icon for an application such as McAfee virus scan, it gets the paint icon and when lauched I get the message: "C:Documents and SettingsCompaq_AdministratorDesktopmcvsshld.exe.lnk. Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

Sep 28, 2008My Paint file disappeared. It use to be listed under ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES but now it is nowhere to be found. It is useful to construct attachments. Can someone help me find it and place it in the START menu again.
