in the last few days it's hanging for 20-40 seconds and i see 'connecting to js.forrestersurveys.com' at the bottom of the browser (firefox 1.0.4) window -if it was just for the initial logon, i wouldn't mind, but every link is the same.
View 6 RepliesI just recently replaced my 200 gig ide harddrive with a 1 TB SATA hardrive, as my old one kicked the bucket. I have reinstalled windows xp and all drivers and got everything working. It is working better than ever ,as my old harddrive was sluggish for some time before it died. But now i am unable to play any 3d games. They boot up fine ,but whenever anything is rendererd in 3d it hangs at random intervals for a good 10-15 seconds then continues for a few seconds and hangs again. I have tried half life 2, swat 4 and ceaser 4. Swat 4 even hangs in the menu screen.

As I look at the Task Manager Performance graph, the CPU usage goes from 0 to 22 every 4 seconds, creating a long line of spikes. The System Idle Process, which really measures the amount of CPU not being used, is always at 99 when no programs are running. So, it seems like there is something "polling" every 4 seconds and it's hanging me up. I have spybot, adaware, hijackthis, Mcafee firewall and AVG anti-virus. Please let me know what you would like to see.

The system has 256k RAM.It is running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301_1519). It also has Norton Internet Security 2004 (v7.0.6.17) and Norton Antivirus (10.0.1.13) with current virus definitions.Sometime in mid-September, my husband (who uses this machine, not me) complained that the machine was hanging on a regular basis. He bought and installed System Mechanic 5 from ioio. (No other new software or hardware was installed immediately prior to the appearance of the problem.)He found a number of problems, cleaned them up, defragged the disk, but the hanging problem remained..
He asked me for my help several days ago, and using the information gleaned from this site, we've downloaded and run the Ewido 3.5 scan (and fix - both free), and then Xoftspy v4.16. I purchased a registration key for Xoftspy, and we've run the fix utility from that, cleaning up the threats, but the hanging problem remains.I'm attaching a log that was created tonight from Hijackthis v1.99.1 in the hopes that you can save us from this problem! I have better things to do than struggle with this.
When I right click on dead shortcuts, my system freezes for about 30 seconds or so. Closest thing I could find that describes this is this KB article, but that applies to right clicking files/folders and not shortcuts, so its solution doesn't work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from ME to XP Home with SP2. After I rebuilt my address list I have notice 2 problems that are likely related. If I right-click on the desktop the system hangs and then refreshes itself almost like I logged off and logged back on. A second problem is that if I am in Windows Explorer and select File it does the same thing. I can install a new folder in an MS Office "save as" screen, but not from the File command. I have already reinstalled XP once - first time Outlook Express displayed messages but you could not open them. I hate to reinstall.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed SP3 and IE8 along with all updates. All went well except now Hibernate and Standby often kill the system including the cursor. If I boot and try Hibernate or Standby it usually works, but if I run for a while and try them they hang the system. The problem did not exist before I installed SP3 and IE8.

I experienced a problem with my system randomly shutting off and after methodically checking all components, I determined the problem was with the CPU fan. I completed all the repairs and tried to fire the system up only to find out I didn't remember what my newly changed system password was. I'd be interested in any other options available to find or restore my password other than rebuilding my hard drive. And yes, I will write it down somewhere next time.

Sometimes it will freeze for no reason, yesterday it froze twice (Once I was just on MSN and the internet. The other I was splitting a file in winrar)I've thought it was overheating as my fan is quite noisy, but it doesnt restart, just freezes. I've scanned for viruses and found none.

Looks normal, fans are running in the PC, but is it frozen. I have to shut it off and restart. Then it works fine until it randomly locks up again. I've done some searching around and its seems like there is no one solution for every computer. It could be the PSU, RAM or cooling. This problem happened 3-4 months ago and then went away until yesterday. It is very random and sometimes when it is just on but idle, and others when it is running a program I.E. Ad-aware. When it comes back on it usually goes tru the motions slower, and stops at a screen that say (amongst others) boot from CD twice afterwhich it says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. After doing that it will run again untilit again randomly repeats. Sometimes in minutes, sometime hours, many times days

I then had my brother look at it, people told me I had a virus from Limewire or nVidia.com and that I should do a full reformat right away, it would only do a quick one and it still didn't help it and when I tried to do a full one I would get an error that says I should put it in safe mode and disable components or something along those lines.I got a new hard drive, but then I had no mouse or internet. I installed my mother board CD. I restarted it thinking it would say new hardware found. I have reinstalled Windows and reinstalled my mother board CD, I tried my mouse on another PC and it worked fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAbout a week back I seem to have gotten a virus that tried to act like a windows firewall popup in an attempt to get me to download bogus software that would do bad things to my computer, well I didn't fall for it, but AVG didn't pikc the virus up right away. But after a day or two it did, and stoped it, but it also found a few other viruses hiding out in windows restore files. I'm actually not sure if this is related to my main problem, but it happened around the same time so I'm reporting it. Ok shortly after I got rid of those viruses my computer started freezing. I noticed it in a game (Vampire bloodlines) But it does it also when i am at the desktop. It is accompanied by a slight crackle from the speakers. I updated and reistalled my soundcard Drivers. It is consistent as if it is polling for something. Even the hard drive crunching stops for that second. I have tried installling all MS updates but it did not help.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI log into my account, windows loads up and during start up, explorer.exe just crashes, it completly removes itself from the task manager every 20 seconds, desktop icons then dissapear with only the wallpaper/background showing. This is a real problem, I've used Spy Doctor and Kaspersky, it found a few malware and trojans and my system appears to be clean however my explorer.exe continues to crash every 20 seconds, forcing me to launch programs through task manager in order for me to function on the Computer. I've read up this problem throughout google and tried some of the advice thats been given to others with a similar problem as the one im facing with however it still crashes.
