my pc is just suddenly switching off just like that and i suspect it could be a virus.but now the problem is if i when to run an antivirus it switches off before the scan is complete. how i can remove the virus that is if it is a virus.

I was considering upgrding to windows 7 anyway. Will the install of a new operating system clean the hard disk of this and any other virus? View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps switching itself to standby on its own after 20-30 minutes. This is a problem as I do alot of DVD back ups so it ends up stopping the software I use meaning I cant do any back ups whatsoever.
I have checked in my power settings and it is supposed to be set to always on, so have no idea why this is happining.
The computer is pretty much brand new from Dell so maybe it is some factory setting.
Everytime I try to switch between a user in XP pro without logging off my computer slows to a crawl. I would have to hit the reset button and restart. It runs pretty quick otherwise. It has a 120 gb harddrive, 256 mb of ram and a atlon processor 3100+. Has anybody experience this before. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway with Windows XP Home Edition.So yesterday I tried to remove a virus and somehow removed some .exe files in C:windows folder.Now when I try to boot up the PC it asks me to start in safe mode or to log in normally. It will show the blue screen of death for half a second and then go back to the options where it asks me to choose Safe mode or Last known configuration. I am also able to hit F8 but anything I choose there will just restart the computer and take me back to those options. It is like a loop, no matter what option I choose, the PC will restart and nothing will happen. None of these options work and I don't think I will be able to fix the PC anymore (besides using the original windows CD and re-install Windows.)

View 8 Replies View RelatedA friend was being bombarded with pop-ups, so I ran two programs which I use on my own computer and have installed on many others; they are "Spybot" and "AdAware." He is running Windows XP Pro. This friend of mine does not go to porn or gaming sites (and I found no evidence that he did), or gambling sites, with the exception of one casino site that has never caused any problems for him
The first time I ran Spybot, it detected 249 problems but couldn't remove some because they were running at the time of the scan, and gave me a choice of running Spybot again the next time the computer was started. I chose yes and it found 197 problems this time and couldn't fix 30 of them. I chose yes again to run Spybot on the next boot, and this time it said that it could not fix 44 problems. I ran RegCleaner and it took out some files but I didn't count them. I then ran Norton WinDoctor which found and fixed eight problems. I followed this with a scan with AdAware, which found 1,083 problems!! It could not fix 235 of them and on the reboot it could not fix 177 of them. The next scan showed 168 problems and could not fix 60 of them on reboot. When I rebooted, a Welcome screen requiring a password for the Username "Owner" came up so I called the guy and asked him if he had ever used a password with this system, and he said no. Now I cannot get into his system at all!
Norton has just told me that my computer has been infected with the trojan.nebuler virus. I have read the various deletion instructions for this specific virus, but all seem to require the recovery console on the XP CD. Seeing as my computer was bought from dell they haven't supplied me with one. Is there anything else I can do. I don't really want to re-install my OS etc...

Got rid of a lot of Trojans & spyware. There is still a suspect, something called DMVLite, cant seem to uninstall this one. Google search only led me to do an HJT log. Maybe most important issue. Ran Belarc, said it is missing 40 critical updates ! There is a Windows Update Shield that says it has a download to install. KB888162,it detects if SP2 is properly installed, it is NOT.Wants me to uninstall SP2. I switched on this morning and after a few minutes the screen went black. I restarted and the screen remained black. I kept swtiching on & off then is started. I did a system restore and now it seems to work OK but the colores have changed, I get a yellow background and my word page is yellow. I have tried altering settings in display to no avail. I am typing this on a yellow page and still get a yellow page in word.

In my bios, when i go to power, the the voltage meter 3.3V is at 4.08 and red. It has not changed since i cleaned it. I have two accounts created on my computer which is running Windows XP Professional. One is the account I've been using for about 3 years, which contains all my personal information, settings, as well as 30 GB of media that is stored in the 'My Documents' folder.

I had a Thrustmaster Dual Power 4 game pad, and bought a Logitech Rumblepad later. I like the Rumblepad better, and want to consider it my "first string" controller. But if I go into say, Nba Live 2005, and go to choose controllers, no matter what I do, the thrustmaster is on the top of the list, and the logitech is on the bottom. All the old posts talk about choosing Preferred device in the control panel. By running DxDiag, I can see that setting something as the Preferred Device assigns it Controller ID 0. But I also see that the order of the Controllers, as recognized by most games, is the same as the order listed in the game controller control panel, and is completely unrelated to which device is "controller id 0" and "preferred device." For example, I set the logitech as preferred device, and plugged in the thrustmaster and also a gamepad pro.
