If my computer is infected with a virus/worm and I system restore it to an infectionless date previous to catching the infection, can I safely say I no longer have an infected computer. In other words can I use my system restore feature to clean out a virus.

Did a regular system scan with Norton Antivirus, and it turned up a file "mmwview_101.dll." It also classified it as a "download.trojan" virus. Of course, as seems to always be the case, Norton was unable to fix, delete, or qurrantine the darn thing. So...I disable system restore, and restarted in safe mode. Did another system scan, exact same result. Depending upon where I look for the information, I get conflicting reports as to how serious this thing is. Nonetheless, I want rid of it. 2 questions, then: 1: what's the best way to go about getting rid of the virus, and 2: would it be completely stupid for me to just try to go in and delete the file manually?

We have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and it won't boot Windows XP, giving me the message system32configsystem is missing or corrupt. I've gone through a number of steps to recover, including using Windows XP startup disk to go into Recovery console, following MS knowledge base articles, running chkdsk, etc. What I've found out is that the "system" file from both windowssystem32config and from windows epair is gone.

As my system is running very slow, I decided to look for the source of the problem. While looking at the system information details I noticed five processes under the name "svchost.exe" with the label "not available for all the information tabs (Path, Min working set, max working set, version, size) The same problem with a process called wmiprvse.exe. Please can you tell what is that and if this is a virus, worm or malware or is only a system process?
I have other for processes "svchost.exe" with the path determined "C:windowssystem 32svchost.exe. Is there any difference? I scaned my computer several time just yesterday.

I have tried to restore my system to the first date available. xp always fails to load and I have to go back to "start windows from the last good configuration" – I started in safe mode, disconnected from the internet- scanned with NAV cleaned a bunch of junk off, scanned with Spybot S&D – cleaned some more junk off tried to restore to day one – same problem - go back to "start windows from the last good configuration"- several hours wasted and I am going crazy. This may be a virus problem

I keep getting this Warning message every time I try to open a folder. Attention, some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP Files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in C: WINDOWS. Download protection software now! Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended). I click No and it directs me to a site that tries to get me to download the software. If I let the page run, the computer becomes disfuctional, and I have to use task manager to close programs and get the computer to respond. I've tried using system restore, adaware SE professional, and Symantec Antivirus to get rid of whatever this may be. Nothing is working. I'm not sure what to do at this point

In March of this year I had the dreaded W32.Klez virus. Although I was able
to destroy it, it not only turned off my system restore, but deleted the tab
from my computer properites.Does anyone know how I can put it back on? Here's the message I get:System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on, contact your domain Administrator.I would appriciate any help, so I don't have to spend money to fix it, if I can avoid it.

I have recently fallen victim to a nasty virus which tried to destroy my entire operating system. It kept sending me pop ups via IE and I guess I downloaded it off a facebook video to which it attached itself.kaboob or something. Anyway, I survived but haven't been able to restore my desktop function ability. First it said'restore my active desktop' but I couldn't. Finally I managed to restore about one eighth of my picture but can't get any further. The rest of my screen is white and that's where it stands now.

I sometimes turn off all my antivirus stuff when I play online games (stupid I know but I need to free up the memory). Anyways today I forgot to turn zonealarm and avg back on, and I got a virus while surfing the net. I cleaned most of it up, but when I right click on the desktop, and go to desktop, the backgrounds box is locked or something, and I can't chang the background.

I have a Dell insiron 530 with recently acquired virus or trojan that has prohibited my computer from running mcafee. I am running Windows XP. I was considering upgrding to windows 7 anyway. Will the install of a new operating system clean the hard disk of this and any other virus? I have already backed up my files onto an external hard drive and ran the Mcafee on the external drive and it is clean.

Microsoft Windows, SpyBot, and Norton all sent a deluge of windows saying they had detected changes. SpyBot sent 7-10 warnings, one of them saying "SpyBot. Search & Destroy has detected an important registry item entry that has been changed. Catagory: System Startup global entry; Change: Value deleted; Entry: elkfqxcj; Old data: c:windowselkfqxcj.exe; [allow change][Deny change].Each of these SpyBot notices had a different entry. Since then my computer is extremely slow, freezes up when left for any time. A window pops us when opening and when changing applications titled "16 bit Windows Subsystem", saying:
C:WindowsSystem32AutoExec.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Window's applications. Choose 'close' to terminate application. [close] [ignore]

I swear, my OS is really a virus. I have a multitude of issues here, of which I am just totally lost on.Issue #1: My folders rename themselves. They do it without me installing any new software or anything else. The folders that appear to re-name are My Computer, Network Neighborhood, My Documents. When this crazy thing hits, then if I name them back to whatever I want, they "magially" rename themselves again, and I do not have to be doing anything. Of course, many times when I reboot this happens. I even went as far as manually editing the registery and still no luck, these puppies rename themself. This is on both my desktop and laptop.Issue #2: My taskbar icons do not always show. A lot of important ones that should be there are not. I do not have the "hide inactive icons" checked, in fact, I did so just to see if those other icons would appear.
