I installed a new HD. When the windows xp screen is on during boot up and the sliding bar is moving across the screen on the 9th/10th pass it seems to hickup/pause for a 1/2 second or so. Since I have had some problems with slow bbot up and excessive disk turning can this be an indication of a problem. Also what is the PC doing while the bar is sliding from left to right?
I am running windows xp and computer is running really slow when first turning it on so i went to start up and system configuration unility and got rid of about 10 programs from start up then rebooted and 5 always come back this has happened every time i go on
I'm running XP on a sony vaio laptop. I accidentally agreed to some prompt while browsing the internet and next thing I knew, popups everywhere and the screen froze. Everytime I restarted, I couldn't do anything but access taskmanager or msconfig. I had excess of 65 processes running. After starting in safemode and uninstalling a bunch of malware (still have command.exe on there that I can't delete and I know nail.exe still present) I can actually do stuff like open IE although I can't use it. At one point I found the app kill32 and ran it because I figured it couldn't get any worse and after that it stopped freezing on startup. Now there is this weird DLL error that comes on when I reboot. Anyways, is there anything specific that I should look for and can eliminate manually? I don't have any anti-virus progs or anything like adaware.
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section or giving too much information at once. I have several issues that I need assistance with so I'll post them and you can take it from there and let me know where to go or post differently. I apologize for all of the questions. If you would like for me to break them up and post differently
Recently, within the past few weeks, I've noticed that my hard drive has been running more than usual. I can hear it running, and I see the activity light flashing when the computer is basically at idle and not doing anything. The weird thing is that if I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and bring up the performance tab, on the top portion of the graph, there is a spike in CPU activity, with the time interval being almost exactly every 60 seconds for about 2 or 3 seconds, along with corresponding hard drive activity. Then it stops and the activity spike repeats about 60 seconds later, over and over.
When I open my Administratives Tools, "Computer Management console" the "disk defragmenter", the "disk management" are VERY SLOW 2Respond and even freeze (not responding) when I clic on a any of the disk task.I run Win XP SP3 very well so far.. and I had since "few days" problems with a VERY LONG black screen before the logon screen.http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?threadID=358991 .first time I resolve it just with a restore back but it begins again.
I began having problems, very slow, not sure what she has installed on it, so I wanted to reinstall windows xp( hope this is what I need to do ,to kinda take junk off and fixes whatever the boot up problem is) I have Windows XP Home addition in the box, I bought for my other computer( but it died), there is no backup disk for this computer, I tried to put the disk in and reboot ( thought this would ,reinstall ) ....I am so lost, I didn't understand the instructions from the reinstall page. Can I put the copy of Windows Xp I have bought new on here? or do I have to take one version off ? I know I cam e to one part asking for administratoer password ( which I have no ideal)...What can I do to start this computer all over?
As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?
I have an ibm think pad with windows 2000 office professinal , it takes approx 12-15 minutes for start up and free space is 78 percent so I know the problem is not space. I am also unable to do a disk cleanup. I have defraged ok and once the computer has started I can surf easily what could be wrong I have a fair knowledge of computers but nothing about configuration Could someone please help?
All of a sudden, my computer is taking about 5 minutes to fully boot up. Before, it took less than a minute to do so. I checked out the Event Viewer and I saw a bunch of disk errors which said, "The deviceDeviceHarddisk 1D has a bad block". D was a partition on my secondary drive. So I performed a chkdsk on it. It found no problems. I used Fix-it Utilities 7 to test it. No problems found. Still taking 5 minutes to boot up and getting the same disk D error events. I swept my system for spyware and malware with Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware. No problems found. Still taking 5 minutes to boot up and getting the same disk D error events
My friend has a gateway computer, little more than a year old with Win XP on it and complains that the entire computer is moving too slow. I suggested to do a disk-clean up, defrag, etc. first and she tried, but she said that the disk-clean up will just hang and if she tries anything else even to cancel it, the system will freeze up.Any ideas? Is it spyware? Or should she just do a whole reformat?
My problem is when I turn on my Dell 5100 I get a floppy disk failure message and it instructs me to hit f-1 which then allows me to boot up. I dont have a floppy disk and this is slowing start up. What can I do to fix this? I went into Bios to try and fix this, nothing has worked. Also when I attempt to start windows media center it crashes.
Running XP sp2.Recnetly,dont know it had anything to do with my kid's download, the pc just failed to respond,if not extremely slow.I did a recovery and it was better but not for long. Now I got the "low disk space message"regularly and i did another disk cleanup;funny thing is no matter how many files I deleted and uninstall, the message is coming back and at time with less space on c:
For a while now, our computer has been running slow. I'm not sure why, anti-virus isn't picking up any viruses, but it's just dragging so bad. So bad that it will just freeze until it catches up on commands. No idea why.. I don't think I'm running low on memory, the computer isn't that old.Another problem I've been having for the longest time is the disk drives aren't opening. When I push the open button, it makes a sound like it's going to come out, but it never does. My sister somehow got it to open this morning, and it does open randomly sometimes after pushing the button a couple hundred times, but it is not at all dependable and half the time I can't use it at all. Today we just bought a replacement that I have to install, but before wasting the $62 I want to make sure that there's nothing that can be fixed easily. For a while I was able to use the emergency eject (you know, with the pin hole) but even that won't work anymore. Just need some help, maybe it's something as simple as new drivers but I have replaced them a few times to no avail
Okay, i have posted thios at heaps of forums and they wont give me any useful info. So now its your turn :P I have windows xp cd. But it will not boot up. The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything. I have tried another version of windows xp pro. Same thing.I want to reformat, i need to reformat. This dialer is costing me money.
I have a Windowa XP laptop by Gateway, when I copy DVD's everything I do on my computer gets very slow.Is there anything that I can do to speed up computer so that I can run other programs at the same time?
My computer is running very slow Since reading some of the other entries I have done some of the quick fixes that were listed such as getting rid of programs not used, disk clean-up and disk defrag but still my computer is lagging.
My computer has been quite slow this past few days and my friend said low disk space can reduce a computer's performance. I installed Windows XP in a 20GB partition and it has 3GB free space left.
I connected a 10GB HDD with Windows 2000 on it to a Windows XP machine using a USB 2.0 external drive enclosure. Apparently, I connected the HDD enclosure to a USB 1.1 port and XP advised me I could get better performance by connecting it to a USB 2.0 port. After some time, XP reported an error indicating it couldn't save E:$Mft (E: is the drive letter assigned to the external enclosure) due to a lazy write problem.I disconnected the external drive enclosure from the system and put it back in the laptop and when I boot the machine, it displays the "starting windows" screen, the progress bar goes to the end, and the machine reboots itself.
i am using XP and my isp is AOL,when using a games site called pogo,my pc just randomly stops,no shut down, and it only happens when playing pogo,it uses java, which i have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version, i've had an error message about dump files and was pointed to this site and told to upload my last dmp errors,
running xp on it. was having problems before so restored to factory settings doing a hard disk format in the process. problem still occuring.could it be ram/overheating?
i seem to be having a problem with my second computer. it keeps turning off and on. it beeps when ever it turns on.i have no idea what the problem is.i was trying to reformat the drive but it would not stay on long enough to read the cd.so i was thinking it might be the harddrive. so i put another harddrive in it that i know is working fine. it does stay on but i get first the safe mode screen. it does not matter what option i pick like start windows normally or start in safe mode after i hit enter i get a blue screen telling me windows has shut down to protect my system from a fatal error. it tells me to check my harddrive for viruses or errors. my problem is i don't know how to get past that blue screen to check my harddrive. i have to turn the computer off. it happens every time i turn it on.i would give you a log report but i can't make one.
I've been having really bad computer troubles recently and really need some help, cause I've wracked my brain trying to think of possible solutions here.To give a bit of background:The computer in question is an AMD Athlon 1800+ that I've had for about 3 years now. It's not the most stellar computer, but I mainly use it to surf the web and play some low-end games nothing spectacular.Recently however it had started to reboot constantly, and eventually just power off and never come back on. I figured it was the power supply, so I purchased a new 400W one, installed it and everything was working great.Fast-forward a couple weeks later, and I started to hear a really odd noise coming from the computer. It sounded almost as if sparks were flying around inside, but I removed the case and checked what the problem was, and it seemed the CPU cooling fan was having some troubles, and eventually stopped working. So just today I went out and bought a new CPU cooling fan, installed it, and again, everything was working fine.
However, just tonight, the computer began to reboot randomly again, and now it is at the point where it will not turn on, and when I do power it on, it just idles and beeps constantly. They are fairly short beeps, but they continue on and on indefinitely. I read up on the beep codes and how they coordinate with the BIOS setting, but problem is I have no idea which BIOS setting I have, so I am not sure what could be the problem. To be safe, I began to unplug the cards one by one, seeing if any of them stopped the beeping, but to no avail. So I am at a total loss here Having just bought those two things recently and STILL having the computer act like a pile of garbage is disheartening to say the least, and I just hope someone may have an idea on what or how I could fix this.
My PC is around 6 years old, maybe older, and for the last couple of months, mostly during the night (which to be honest scares the hell out of me), it will turn on randomly. Sometimes it's when I move the mouse, which I know had something to do with a setting in the BIOS, but sometimes it's for no reason at all. It just...boots. Sometimes straight after I turn it back off. I've had to unplug it at night.I always shut it down properly - no standby or hibernation.
In my Local Area Connection Properties, I turned off the Internet Connection Firewall, but I have symptoms of it being on, like, unable to host Warcraft 3 games, slow download speeds, etc etc, and even an error that say it is on while I'm patching World of Warcraft, is there a way to fix this?
I'm considering turning off System Restore (SR), but I wonder if there are consequences beyond the obvious? For instance, do Microsoft security updates ever need to set a restore point, and if SR is off would these updates fail?
My PC keeps turning on sticky keys. I have turned this off in control panel and in the dialogue box that appears but it just keeps turning on and off randomly.I reset the sytem to an earlier date and that cures it for a day or two then back.I have rune three different virus checkers but they find nothing.
