No Internet - Crazy Malware - Excessive Processes

Aug 29, 2005

I'm running XP on a sony vaio laptop. I accidentally agreed to some prompt while browsing the internet and next thing I knew, popups everywhere and the screen froze. Everytime I restarted, I couldn't do anything but access taskmanager or msconfig. I had excess of 65 processes running. After starting in safemode and uninstalling a bunch of malware (still have command.exe on there that I can't delete and I know nail.exe still present) I can actually do stuff like open IE although I can't use it. At one point I found the app kill32 and ran it because I figured it couldn't get any worse and after that it stopped freezing on startup. Now there is this weird DLL error that comes on when I reboot. Anyways, is there anything specific that I should look for and can eliminate manually? I don't have any anti-virus progs or anything like adaware.

Update And Internet - Malware

Jul 18, 2010

I had a malware infection some time ago, which I hope is gone. Then later I had a firefox update and now all things have gone wonky. For some reason my internet connections reset to using a proxy. Once I unchecked that option in Firefox and also under LAN settings, at least I now have both Firefox and IE working again. But I can't go to Windows Update website, or really most microsoft websites. On either browser. They both give me error messages. I am suspicious that it has something to do with the malware but I don't know what to do.

Malware And Hijacks Cannot Use Internet

May 3, 2005

Pc running 2000 professional which I think has been hijacked and has perhaps other malware problems. I don't know 2000 at all. Programs work and you can hook up to the internet, but as soon as you do, according to the connection status, it is sending out bytes by the thousands rapidly and receiving some bytes and therefore I cannot download anything to fight what I believe are hijacks/malware etc as the line seems jammed and all the programs say unable to download. You cannot also it seems hook up to his home page. Email jams up as well. I managed to copy the "hijack this" program from my laptop to his pc and thus I can post this log of his pc.If we can stop the hijack etc and I can download from the interent, I will update his Norton, download ad-aware and spybot and spyblaster and show him how to use these to prevent this in future.

Malware Infecting Internet Explorer: Getting Popups While Using IE?

Apr 10, 2006

Im currently running a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows Home edition. I recently scanned with ewido and ad-aware, i could not run the ad-aware in smart scan mode (my computer would go to blue screen with fatal system error and would shut down if i did).I accidentally download a winfixer application a few months ago. I quickly uninstalled it after after reaslizing that it was not part of the windows secruity suite.

I recently downloaded ad-aware and scanned comp, the files are now quarantined, but i still get pop ups while using internet explorer. The last scan verified that i had trojans, and data miners all which were quaratined, but i still get pop ups (even with those sites on my blocked list). Is there anything i can do to stop the pop ups, and to over all get rid of the infection i have on my computer?

Multiple Internet Explorer Processes Appearing

Apr 6, 2005

I've been noticing some strange problems with my win2k box recently. If I go to the task manager, I notice I get multiple IEXPLORER.EXE processes appearing, some taking a good quantity of RAM over. If I try and end the process it comes back after a second and grows in file size. I've read some other threads and have HijackerThis 1.9, I can't see anything suscpicious in the log, but I'm a novice at that sort of thing. Also I checked for trojans etc and other files/folders but could see anything obvious.

60 Processes Running At Startup: Removing The Processes?

Sep 30, 2008

At any one time I have approx 60 processes running, even after just booting up my computer. Although I am not a computer expert, this seems like too many to me. I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me if this definitely is too many to run at once, and if there is some way I can post a list of the running processes and have someone with more knowledge help me get rid of some of them.

Also, some of the other running processes i recognize, i.e. firewall, IM, anti-virus, but some of them I don't have a clue what they are. Is there a list somewhere of what should/shouldn't be running necessarily?

Since I have had some problems with slow bbot up and excessive disk turning can this be an indication of a problem. Also what is the PC doing while the bar is sliding from left to right?

Computer Facing Excessive Hard Drive Activity?

Oct 19, 2010

Recently, within the past few weeks, I've noticed that my hard drive has been running more than usual. I can hear it running, and I see the activity light flashing when the computer is basically at idle and not doing anything. The weird thing is that if I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and bring up the performance tab, on the top portion of the graph, there is a spike in CPU activity, with the time interval being almost exactly every 60 seconds for about 2 or 3 seconds, along with corresponding hard drive activity. Then it stops and the activity spike repeats about 60 seconds later, over and over.

Crazy Pro - System Freezes - Sticks Of RAM

Mar 6, 2010

I got a message about my DIMM configuration being arranged in a way that was not optimal, that it needed to be installed in a parallel way to work the best.
I called the guy who gave it to me and he came to look at it, he removed one of the 3 sticks of RAM, and left. And that fixed NOTHING. So I booted the computer from Last Known Good, I uninstalled SP3, then reinstalled it. And that seemed to fix it. Except now, the computer shows that I'm running SP2, NOT 3, and I can no longer open Internet Explorer. It won't open at all.

Crazy Computer Will Just Freeze - Video Camera Program

Jan 16, 2006

there, there is this pc at work, I just re-loaded windows xp service pac 2 on it, and this computer will just freeze up. Seriously it can be sitting there doing nothing or I will have the video camera program turned on, and for no apparent reason, it will just freeze up, and the only way to get it to work again is to reboot it. I have tried updating the mouse, sound, video drivers - the mouse was acting kinda wierd one day - it just seemed sluggish so I updated the driver for it. The sound driver needed to be updated so I could get rid of the yellow question mark in the hardware profile and that is gone and I thought that fixed it but later that same day, it just froze again. Now there is no set time or anything like that, there are days that it will work perfectly all day and then the next day it will freeze after being on for 20 minutes or less, and there are days that it will work for 4 hours and then freeze

Dual Screen Setup Works Fine During System Bootup; TV Goes Crazy When Windows

Jul 17, 2008

In the past, I have used the S-video port (with RCA adapter) in a dual view setup with my TV. I recently reinstalled Windows XP and now I can't get the secondary display (the TV) to work correctly. I just get a bunch of black & white lines moving up the screen (looks like bad reception/static on a TV). The weird thing is that the TV displays everything fine during the bootup process, including the loading screen with the Windows XP logo. Full color and everything. It's when Windows actually starts that the TV freaks out. Another weird thing is if I use nVidia's TV setup Wizard and select "Span," the image on the TV actually stabilizes. But I am forced to keep a low resolution on the monitor (which wasn't the case before I reinstalled XP), and as soon as I make any other changes the TV goes back to freaking out.
