View 14 RepliesI am trying to update up my Compaq HP WinXP laptop using Detective driver program that I purchase. It downloads the file, say, Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated F etc then opens up in free winRar program, which opens up about 50 files. Totally lost. I have no idea how to unzip and use winrar or how to make it download to 7zip which I see people seem to like. It doesnt give me a option. Tired of being afraid of programs that arent self installing. So decided its time to learn how.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP. In the past few days, all of my jpg files in My Pictures have suddenly shown up on Display Properties-Desktop (in other words, instead of just the desktop background pictures that came with my Dell pc, suddenly all my personal pics are in the desktop backgrounds scroll list as well). How do I keep my jpgs, but eliminate them from the desktop backgrounds scroll list? (Display Properties-Desktop takes a looong tme to open now, because there are so many files in it). The same thing has happened recently on my wife's pc, also running XP.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have some problems with my computer while updating Winrar archive. For example, I have a file named Report.rar consists of 3 files. When I try to add 4th file to the archive, the problem occurs. The process of updating archive is shown for a second, then my computer restart. The problem also occurs when I try to install Avast Home Edition. The progress bar of installation continues but at the same percent, my computer restart. I've tried for another version of Avast, installing Malware Byte, but my computer restart too. After restarting, it shows a dialog says "Microsoft has recovered from a serious error." I simply click OK and my computer works fine, except for updating Winrar archive again or installing Avira and Malware Byte.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWas using a trial version of WinRaR to access a file I required from a download, now all compressed files on my HD have been converted to WinRaR from XPs Compressed(zip)Folder format. Would like to convert back but cant find the program when browsing for it in properties. When I click on the zipped files then go to "open with", the XPs Compressed(zip)Folders option isn't there. Even going to "chose program" I cant find it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy parents have a gateway home computer upgraded to Vista with SP1. Yesterday, my dad downloaded jzip and winrar and a free video editing software from AVS, I believe it is AVS 4 Editor. Soon after that whenever I did a right click, the response seemed to lag and slow to come up. Any selection I clicked from the right click selection would seem to hang there on the screen even though the computer processed it. It goes away after I right click again but not select. It only happens when I right click on the desktop, start menu, taskbar. When I right click in my browser firefox, it is alright. I unistalled AVS4 but the problem persists. All my programs are running fine. The rick click slowness is just nagging.
View 1 Replies View Relatedis there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files)
I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden.
Any ideas?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been having really bad computer troubles recently and really need some help, cause I've wracked my brain trying to think of possible solutions here.To give a bit of background:The computer in question is an AMD Athlon 1800+ that I've had for about 3 years now. It's not the most stellar computer, but I mainly use it to surf the web and play some low-end games nothing spectacular.Recently however it had started to reboot constantly, and eventually just power off and never come back on. I figured it was the power supply, so I purchased a new 400W one, installed it and everything was working great.Fast-forward a couple weeks later, and I started to hear a really odd noise coming from the computer. It sounded almost as if sparks were flying around inside, but I removed the case and checked what the problem was, and it seemed the CPU cooling fan was having some troubles, and eventually stopped working. So just today I went out and bought a new CPU cooling fan, installed it, and again, everything was working fine.
However, just tonight, the computer began to reboot randomly again, and now it is at the point where it will not turn on, and when I do power it on, it just idles and beeps constantly. They are fairly short beeps, but they continue on and on indefinitely. I read up on the beep codes and how they coordinate with the BIOS setting, but problem is I have no idea which BIOS setting I have, so I am not sure what could be the problem. To be safe, I began to unplug the cards one by one, seeing if any of them stopped the beeping, but to no avail. So I am at a total loss here Having just bought those two things recently and STILL having the computer act like a pile of garbage is disheartening to say the least, and I just hope someone may have an idea on what or how I could fix this.
My PC is around 6 years old, maybe older, and for the last couple of months, mostly during the night (which to be honest scares the hell out of me), it will turn on randomly. Sometimes it's when I move the mouse, which I know had something to do with a setting in the BIOS, but sometimes it's for no reason at all. It just...boots. Sometimes straight after I turn it back off. I've had to unplug it at night.I always shut it down properly - no standby or hibernation.

View 7 Replies View Relatedhere's the deal my vista kept getting blue screens so I reinstalled it. I was unhappy with it and tried to install XP. The computer keeps turning off on install while its loading files. I've formatted several times to try and get this working so now I don't even have an os to get on the computer with. I'm running an acer aspire 5100. I tried to get back on by installing vista again but the expanding files part of the install stops at 90% and I get an error. Repairs from both xp and vista install discs don't do anything.

I use Mozilla Firefox .... and when I had installed the Java, I would come to TSG and check it out on Chat. 99.9 % of the time - all worked great with no problems. I don't know why now? I tried the java on a test page/ which said it was working, yet I can not access chat and I get timed out trying? I will add 2 pictures as reference. as I am getting dizzy going around in circles.

I have a 7 year old Compaq Presario Desktop. 3 times now (Thurs night, Fri night, Sat morning) while it's being used the screen goes black, and the fans shut off inside the tower. But the green power light stays on. I turned off the PC last night to let it cool down but this AM the same thing happened again. Is this problem due to the computer over heating? I just cleaned the whole thing up 2 months ago for the first time in a long time, but maybe something got in there causing the fan not to spin correctly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed anti-virus on my other computer. I turned it off last night and this morning I turned it on to find the mouse and KB don't work. I noticed the optical light is on until the windows loading screen shows up and then it immediately shuts off. I have looked in the bios everything is enabled, I tried to boot into safe mode and that doesn't work either, as soon as windows starts loading the mouse shuts off. I tried repairing windows and when it reboots to re-install, the mouse light goes off again. Later, an error pops up looking for a file iaStor.sys, which i cannot locate because my mouse does not work.
It comes up in the middle of turning on with a message "Enter CURRENT Password". I tried taking it off in the setup boot menu, but think, by selecting "Clear startup password," I reset it to some default password, which I dont know. Now i cant get my computer to turn on, cause dont know the turning on password

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure whether this is a hardware or software problemBasically at random times my computer just seems to lose power and shuts itself off. Ive have taken it too computer shops and had it looked at, they have done various things like change motherboard etc and none of that has helped. The last piece of advice I had was that it was probably software related and the best way to fix it would be to simply wipe the system and start from scratch but if possible id like to avoid that.Sometimes the PC will stay on for 4/5/6hours at a time and run fine, other times after just 5 minutes it will shut itself off. Then when I try to turn it back on it won't switch on unless it is left for a while.
