Service Pack 2 Downloaded - Lost Task Bar And Icons
Aug 12, 2005
Every time I download service pack 2 I lose my task bar and icons. Internet explorer will not start. I tried to download off the computer and finally sent for disk. Nothing seems to work. I have a 64 bit computer but my XP home is a 32 bit. I tried to turn off all firewalls and Norton and nothing seems to work. Thinking of saving all files and starting over(re download XP). The only way I get everything back is to restore to the earlier time

I recently took the liberty of downloading a trojan. Having been gifted with the ability of NOT knowing that much about computers, I decided to just format the harddrive and start over. Seemed simple enough. Apparently when I reloaded XP from the cd that came with the laptop (Pavilion zd8000) I screwed the pooch. I think I went through the repair console. It never asked me to punch in the registration code. Now, everytime I boot, it goes to a black screen with white lines across the bottom the fill in slowly as though it is running a scan disc on bootup. It literally takes about twenty minutes to boot! I went out and did the microsoft updates, and it grabbed everything but service pack 3.

I had Windows Live Update on, and it was downloading and installing Service Pack 3.
But almost at the end, the download got cut off on its own, even though my internet connection was still on, and the laptop froze. So i restarted it, and although now it says i have service pack 3, i seem to be having problems.
It doesn't install itself on startup, it only tries to installs, then it says i have an error somewhere.
I tried downloading it manually from both microsoft.com and from another website, it's a 316MB file, using Download Accelerator Plus. Both time it would reach to the end, tells me its 100%, but keeps downloading as if nothing happened. I end up reading: "325MB of 316MB" and stuff like that.

I installed XP SP3 and after the installation and a reboot I had lost my sound card + my VPN connection to the office no longer worked.
I could live without sound or could reinstall my sound card but the VPN connection to the office is critical to my daily work.

Initially while on XP Home 1Service Pack I was able to cancel any task running shown in the Task Manager window (alt-ctrl-del). About three weeks ago I started getting "unable to terminate process" message when trying to cancel a SYSTEM task (i.e. javaw). This is still the case. I have since installed the SP2 on my PC.My logon is as an administrator and has been all along. I did not change any settings that could have caused this problem. Is there a setting that I am overlooking that controls this ability?

Once I installed sp3, I could not get past the windows loading screen, so I started in safemode and uninstalled sp3 that way. My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.

I have had Windows XP on my computer for 3 years, during that time I have had no problems with updates. A couple of days ago updates were running when I got the following message box. Service pack 3 setup. Access denied1! Microsoft will now un-install the current updates. At this point I was in a hurry to leave and shut off my computer thinking that when I started up again, the updates would resume their activity.......

For Some odd reason, After I downloaded an AVG free update I lost my desktop. All the profiles on my computer only show the background when you open them. All programs still operate correctly. I can open the task manager and run programs from it, but all the icons and the start bar are gone. I am not able to open any display controls, nor can I right click and get any options. I am not even able to pull up the control panel.

I have a retail version of Windows XP Pro without any service packs. Where can I download SP3? I looked at Microsoft's website but it is way to confusing. I think I downloaded SP3 but it said it was meant for IT professionals to be used on a network.

I normally remove the updates/SPs from my Windows folder after a few days of running with the SP installed. All those packs can take up a ton of space. I move them to a separate folder for safe keeping for about a week, then, if all is well, I delete them. I don't think I've deleted the IE7 SP, but I don't know what the SP number is.

I am unable to install windows xp service pack 2. I have downloaded it and it gets to final stages of instalation (performing cleaning) and then I get an error message saying that it could not complete installation. I have a proper copy of win xp and have used it for ages and registered it. The problems came when I got a new motherboard and it asked me to register windows which I did successfully. When I went to download SP2 it told me I had to register windows and to follow certain steps in the control panel.
