New install of OS, all MS security & crit updates. Nothing extra. Few apps installed.
When I right click on file(s) in a folder the screen blinks, and I hear the sound of a USB PnP device being added to the system. Of course no evidence of a PnP being installed. No USB devices are attached. All USB ports have been tested and are good. And worst off all - This is intermintant.
When i turn on,first Windows screen appears,then a blue screen blinks,then hp screen,then a blank page with cursor on the top left,then a screen with the message"we apologise for the inconvinience but Windows did not start successfully.there was a hardware or software problem.I tried to run it in Safe mode, Windows normally,last known configuration but no luck......Then someone suggested to Get into the Recovery Console by making a Recovery CD with ISO image but the machine is not responding to any of it.Is it with CD/DVD ROM drive or any major hardware problem???...I ran a self hard drive test and it seemed fine
View 3 Replies View RelatedRight clicking on any video file causes the screen to blank/black for a portion of a second, but when it comes back the correct menu is open from the right click. Everything works perfect on the PC, but this bugs me to no end.

Come to think of it, the blank/black screen I'm talking about looks exactly like when I switch between PC's using the KVM. But only one of the PCs has this quirk.
PC hangs in any one of the following ways;screen blinks black for a second of so, then returns but is frozen (no mouse movement or anything)screen blinks black and returns but all garbled & corrupted and frozen screen blinks black and monitor says "no input" and promptly turns itself off this usually occurs between half an hour and an hour of turning the PC on.. but the duration is by no means fixed, and it will sometimes only last a few minutes. the same applies after a restart.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got this inspiron 1100 off ebay it didn't come with a hard drive so I put the hard drive from my inspiron 9300 into it and when you turn it on the the power light is on and the hard drive light blinks once and stays off. The screen remains black and when i tried to hook it to a montior still nothing black screen. was wondering if i used the wrong kindof hard drive?or am I looking in the wrong direction.

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel, WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.

Can anyone tell me how to change my setting for clicking to open a folder for my home computer. When I dbl click with left mouse button It goes to the search screen. I have to right click and choose "open". On my computer at work when I left click a folder it will open and right click a folder the "open option is on top of the list and on my home computer the "search " option is on top.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently use Adobe Photoshop for much of my work, I require various specialized fonts, such as the ones done specifically for films, TV and Bands alike.
Whenever I click to go into my fonts folder, you know c:windowsfonts, it freezes,it just gets stuck there, an I need access.When this was working, downloaded fonts only worked at the time i placed them in.The .ttf file stayed in the fonts folder, but when I came logged on at another time after logging off/shuting down, the font was no longer in the drop down lists in the Microsoft programs/photoshop, and like i said was still in the fonts folder.
I have never realised my current winXP has problems opening .bat file. When I click on such file, all it shows was a new window (something that look like DOS window) but as soon as it opens, it closes fast too. In effect, nothing is being run or activated (if that the correct words to use). I have downloaded some programs that required .bat file and because of this I can't run them. Is there anything wrong with my system? It is currently Windows Xp home edition version 2002, SP2.

After doing it once, it is fast to do so to the next file (doing a few rar's or something), but as soon as I don't touch any files for about a minute or two, it goes back to the huge delay to perform anything. I've tried defragging and unchecking 'Automatically search for network folders and printers'.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery time I right click on a file or shortcut, the Windows installer dialogue pops up with "preparing to install". I've spend hours cleaning off redundant files, running scans and generally cleaning up. I've reinstalled the Windows Installer, and run a repair install of XP home SP2, only to arrive at the conclusion that the installer was damaged by spyware at a point when it tried to uninstall a program which placed an entry on the right-click properties menu, and didn't uninstall it correctly. Now every time I right-click, the menu is referencing a registry value which prompts the Windows installer to start because it can't find the now-uninstalled program. Or that's my take on it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy prob is a bit of a saga I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall managed to find a freephone number and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.
After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.
Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.
So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.
I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup
Which all sound hunky dorey but I don't have any original bootable CD (the PC doesn't have a floppy drive), so I can't type 'r' to repair!!!!
In my possesion I do have an XP Pro CD, a Win2000 CD and a Win98 CD - my question is can I use these other CD's to try a 'repair' and get into the 'manual' area to try the methods above (the OS is Win Media Edition on the PC)?
I was told a new hard drive would fix this error, but it didnt. My computer very rarely boots up successfully.After about 1 and 25 tries, it beeps and turns on successfully, continuing to all of the steps of the boot process.But the other 24 times, i turn it on, and it just sits there, without a beep, or the monitorpowering on all the way to a screen. All that happens is the "read" light on my cd rom blinks.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP Pro. When turn my computer on, it goes to the "Welcome Screen" that has a picture icon with my name next to it. I click on my name, and the computer starts. I want to bypass this. I just want to turn the computer on and have it go right to the desktop and be ready to use without the Welcome screen. I am the only user of this computer, so the logon or Welcome screen is not necessary.
I did locate a web site that supposedly told how to do this, but when I followed the advice, the computer booted to a generic desktop with all of my icons and shortcuts gone, and it asked me if I wanted to take a tour of Windows as if I never used it before. I am the only user, I am the administrator, I want to start my system with no Welcome screen or password prompt, just right to my desktop.
I am trying to copy my Quicken files and it states it automatically copies them in the Windows XP's temporary CD burning folder. How do I find this folder to copy these files onto a CD or DVD.

I do not know how I have change the Window operating system setting that when I double click on most of the folders in my computer it goes to a searh menu. Only "My Document" folder is working correctly (when I double click on it, it opens the folder rather than going to search mode). The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. was getting a blue screen 07A was told by computer techs without looking it was either my hard drive or my operating system. Checked my hard drive several different ways and no problems. So I went to do a Windows XP repair instead of complete reinstall as they are a pain. After a long time it came back that couldn't do this because SPCMDCOM>SYS file was missing and couldn't repair from recovery console without it. My hard drive was replaced by Dell in July of 05 I think. What can I do without going to extremes? Secondly can I install my cd/dvd rom on my other Dell PC with discs I already have? I am very aggravated. I want to try to save at least 1 computer. On the 1st PC about 2 months ago I had my 17 inch flat panel go out it starts but then go black, I am using the 2nd computers screen!

i then bolded "enqueue in winamp" and clicked "set default" then clicked ok.
every file folder i click on, the default action is enqueue in winamp.i was having a problem with my right click context menu and winamp wasnt an option(i uninstalled winamp,reinstalled,went into options,everything to no avail).SO i thought this may do the trick in adding it to my right click options.
How i can change this back to the default norm of clicking on the file folder and entering to see its contents
