Repair Installation : Files Needed .'asms'
Mar 28, 2010First time poster; having an issue with a Windows XP repair installation. More specifically, during the repair installation process I am presented with this error message:"Files Needed The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. Copy files from: D: . . . " Note that the Windows XP DVD includes Service Pack 2. Also note that when the error message presents, the CD-ROM essentially goes dead.

Jul 4, 2006I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

I have over 50GB of files/program's and it would be a pain to lose any of them(I dont have the discs). I have the XP installation disc that came with the computer. Is there any way to wipe all the personal files and programs without deleting XP and the drivers? I already have a dell dimension 8250 with an xp home disc but it won't install over pro.

Do not select this option - it will only take you to the Recovery Console which is not what we want to do. Instead, choose to continue the installation When you see the license agreement, press F8 to agree On the next screen make sure your current XP installation is selected and then press "R" to repair XP At this point XP will begin to install on top of itself, replacing damaged, missing or altered system files. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to complete the Repair Install. It will look very much like a normal (new) OS installation. If all goes well your repaired XP installation will remain iintact, keeping your personalized settings and installed programs as they originally were. Remember, choose the second repair option, not the first.

Jul 18, 2005I am losing only picture and video files my computer. I save a file off the internet it usually lasts a few days on my hard drive and then disappears. I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.

May 17, 2009On yahoo home page was holding mouse over an ad. The computer suddenly crashed and restarted. My husband then got a sudden error message on his computer.
"One of the files containing the System's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful" You could not get it to go away if you clicked ok. We restarted in manually because you were not able to get into start or any programs at all. I did get it to go away at one point but still could not get into any programs or start menu. I was trying to run an anti virus and also a clean up and fix of registry, but could not.
SP3 Installation Repair Failure
Sep 28, 2010I purchased the Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop about 2 years ago. It shipped with Vista at the time, but I installed XP on the partition Vista was installed on and have been using it happily ever since. There is a common problem as it turns out, after having read through other forums, that used to exist with Dell laptops, including mine and that is that they would come shipped with the Mediadirect button. When pressed, it supposedly boots the laptop to another partition, which would start up a multimedia software that can playback CDs, DVDs and/or other media files on the accessible storage. The critical and serious issue is that once this button is pressed and you try to turn on the laptop normally again (boot into Windows), it would not boot up, producing the Invalid partition table error at boot-up, suggesting that the former process messes up the boot record somehow.
The same thing happened to me before. A quick suggested fix was to press the button again. While it didn't solve the issue, it at least booted in the right partition, but complained about an ntfs sys file not being there. I solved this myself by repairing the existing Win XP Pro SP3 installation via an XP SP2 CD, which reverted back SP3 to SP2 without much hassle, surprisingly, and Windows booted up normally. I just had to manually update the system to SP3 again using Windows update and that was all. Other software like IE and WMP were also reverted, but reinstalled to the latest version manually.
Failed Repair Installation
Apr 23, 2010Everything was running fine with my desktop PC till I turned it on this morning. It booted fine, Windows XP started and I entered my password. My desktop background appeared as standard but i had no taskbar, no start button and i was geting no response from either my right or left mouse buttons from clicking on the screen. I tried to get into task manager by using CTRL+ALT+DEL hoping I could get my explorer processes running again, but nothing happened other than a brief appearance of an egg timer. I powered down and started again hoping it was just a glitch. I was too optimistic. So I tried again, again and again achieving the same results. I had no luck getting into task manager or accessing any functions at all. I assumed that if explorer wasnt providing me with rudimentary functionality and if task manager was refusing to work either my only option was to attempt a repair installation of XP using my Windows setup disk to fix the problems.

Does it only replace the whole hive? Does it do more than replacing damaged hives through recovery console? What system files are affected? I ask because I did a repair installation last week and to my surprise it didn't even touch a windows application data folder which held a .pst file. Which led me to wonder what folders are "repaired", and to what extent. Links are okay. Just so you know I am not looking how to do it. Only what it does.

Dec 7, 2008Every music folder in My Music after C (cameo!) has disapeared although I know they are still there - i can still play them in itunes and even open the song folder but if I copy it and drop it back into My Music it vanishes. Windows doesn't even recognise the memory that the missing files use and thinks the folder holds 3 gigs when its more like 30. Pro Setup-Registering Components - Repair Installation
May 21, 2005I read somewhere that I could do a repair installation to see if I could fix it. Well I go through the usual steps until I get to registering components where it goes for about a minute and then restarts. I thought thats what its suppose to do so I wait and wait and it goes through the whole process over so I go through it about 10 times before I realize something is wrong. So I go on my brother's laptop and look up whats wrong and I try opening the comand prompt by pressing shift+F10 and then typing "control sysdm.cpl" to get to the system in the control panel

Feb 12, 2009In response to this I attempted to use System Restore. This failed, for some reason after selecting the restore date, clicking next did nothing. I then decided to go on a deleting spree, removing all unnecessary folders, programs etc. Somewhere along the line I must not have been paying attention and deleted the i386 folder. Of course, all hell broke loose and I couldnt even log into any users be it safe mode or not (I got automatically logged out).
Now to the real problem: The setup gets to 34 minutes remaining and encounters some problems while installing devices. A number of pop up messages appear, After that last pop-up, the keyboard and mouse promptly freeze, and a final pop-up appears replacing the italics line with "Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem". Unfortunately I now cant click yes or no, and therefore cant continue with the setup.

Dec 29, 2005Due to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

(I got the "Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" message).I changed the order to the disk drive under the setup utility and was able to get it to recognize the Windows XP Install CD but that's where I'm unsure what to do. It gives me the option to either set up Windows or repair using Recovery Console.If I reinstall will I lose all the files on my computer? I have photos of my first born on there that I don't want to lose!

This includes the Windows installer and Windows firewall as well as my Mcaffe security software. So I decided to repair windows by loading over the top. I had a problem at the end which seemed to be resolved by / CHKDSK R . However now it loads through to my login and then when I enter my password it says soemthing like - This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now? If I say no it closes the system down. If I say yes it just hangs on the teletubbies screen, without loading any apps.

Mar 31, 2006when i turned my on my pc everything was fine, i update and ran "ad-awareSE" to check my pc, it remove 3 files, finished.
then i launch "disk clean up" which is provided my windows orignally, to clean up my pc, i select everything on the list and i click ok so it would start removing the files, but then something strange happened.
as 'disk clean up' starts cleaning my system i noticed it's taking alot longer than usual, then all of a sudden a horrifying message pops up:
warning: system files found in windows have been change or have been replace by an unknown source, current system files are unstable and will cause stability issues, please insert "WINDOWS XP installation cd" into a cd rom drive, set up will fresh replace current files with ones from windows xp cd.-----
i click cancel and it warns me that my system will become unstable, no more warning message have pop up UNTIL i launch "disk clean up" again, i once again select everything in the list and click ok so it could began cleaning my system.
then the same message pops up again.
i decided to do what it tells me, i took out my windows XP SP2 cd, put it in the cd rom drive, and soon windows start reading the cd WHILE disk clean up starts cleaning my system.
there's no message telling me that windows is repairing my system files, all i see is "disc clean up" cleaning my pc AND AT THE SAME TIME my cd rom drive is reading my winXP cd.
after it's all over, i tdidn't tell me to restart my pc, but i did anyway and after that i ran 'disk clean up' and i didn't notice anything strange in windows, i ran 'disk clean up' again, and there was no more warning message, i ran disk cleanup for a few more times and everything was ok.
i first thought maybe it was because of a hacker attacking my pc and messing up my system files, but that's not possible becasue i activated "block traffic" in norton firewall 2005, plus i already updated norton antivirius 2005 with the latest definition, and use ad-aware to remove all tracs of spyware, so really, what what happen back then, what's wrong with my pc?
how can i solve this?
Can't Complete Windows Repair After HD Move
May 1, 2009After a PSU failed and took my motherboard with it, I decided to build a new system and move my hard drive. Of course XP wouldn't boot. Since I didn't have an XP disc on hand (old system came with XP preloaded), I purchased Vista figuring I might be able to do an in-place upgrade (i could use 64-bit anyways). This didn't work as the Vista upgrade demanded to be started from within windows. I downloaded a clean version of XP w/ bittorrent and attempted a repair install. This seemed to go fine until setup restarted to complete the installation. Now XP restarts automatically on the loading screen and if I start in safe mode, I get the message "Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode."

Aug 22, 2007Did a repair install, everything is working except windows updates, it says I have updates and I can click on custom and it shows them when I click to install them it acts like it will then a box comes up and say they all failed. I turned off auto updates and went to the site and click on custom and they came up but the same thing won't install did it with express install to and its the same,. Any one know what could be wring, one update it needs is the windows validation update I know the disk is valid it came with the machine and it retook the product number when I did the repair install.
