Recently my father-in-law installed a program on to my computer. It set up a desktop icon, that did not get removed when it was uninstalled. I can't even right click on it and hit delete because it's not there, nor can I just hit delete. How can it be removed manually. It is a "share-to-web upload folder" from a hp digital camera. I aslo don't have access to the cd to reinstall it and uninstall again. Also I can't get task manager to work, I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete and nothing. I right click on the task bar and click on task manager and nothing. Iwas working a few days ago, don't know what happened, anyway to get it back? I already tried system restore but only goes back a few days.
Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.
I keep getting the same 6 icons popping up on my desktop at random. I have run Spy Bot and Ad Aware and neither one can get rid of these annoying icons. I delete them and they just come back within a short period of time.
I have an HP printer. After I open and work with HP Gallery, it causes strange icons to appear on my desktop--as many as 30 or more, sometimes. Some of them are labeled with a numeral; 1, 2, 3 etc. Others are labeled "Directory Map". One is labeled "last-write". When I open this one, my Notepad page appears, with the date and time showing the time I opened the HP Gallery. Most labeled with a number allow me to Preview them, but "No Preview Is Available" appears when I click on Preview. Others labeled with a number and all labeled Directory Map, allow me to Open them. When I do, a page appears, filled with words and short phrases; many of them relate to "gallery" and "documents and settings". Does anyone know what causes this, and how I can prevent it? It is a nuisance to send them to the recycle bin each time I leave the HP gallery.
I have 3 different people, with no connection to each other, that have called me today. All are running Win XP.Seems that they turned on their computers today or yesterday and all their icons are missing. The only thing that they are able to get to is the task manager, nothing else.I haven't heard of any virus'/ trojan's/ or malware resently that causes this and reading ton's of descriptions takes too long.
My desktop is cluttered with icons I want to remove the clutter by removing icons from it.Is there any way out to do this with out losing any functionality?
Some of desktop icons can be removed without actually removing the program they represent, but others, when I right click to remove, will remove the entire program along with the icon. Is there some way I can remove just the icon without removing the program?
the numlock state is changed. I always keep numlock set, but after using remote desktop, the numlock is unset.taks manager is frozen. The taskmanager icon is displayed in the notification tray, but clicking on it does nothing.I have to start a new instance of task manager. I am able to kill the first instance using the new instance.
I consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.
Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).
My son has a Dell dimension 9100 The taskbar/start and all the desktop icons disappear and then reappear every 10-4 seconds All programs can still be accessed through start if you r quick enough!! otherwise throught the task manager. The system will not start in safe mode, only get a blue screen in safe mode, asdvising to run CHKDSK, which we have. Is the hard drive on its way out?? or does this sound repairable?
I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.
I can't seem to get any desktop icons or taskbar to show when i log in to xp. It happens for all users. I also can't use ctrl-alt-del to get to task administrator (it has been disabled for some reason-was never a prob before so I didn't fix it...) All this happened the next startup after doing a full system scan with norton and a spybot check (the spybot downloaded a few new updates too).
I have a New Dell E520. Have use it for 4 days, then error shutdowns started.(Having to use laptop again.) Used system restore, and now No start menu, task bar or desktop icons.Key board hardly works on power up until the welcome screen, so safe mode start is not possible Can run certain program using task manager, but none that might help to solve problem.
The start menu, task bar and icons are all missing. The only way i can open anything is to hit ctrl alt del and open the task manager. Where did everything go?
Can anyone help? I ran Spybot and deleted all identified problems. Now when I reboot, and anytime I startup, I get to blank wallpaper with nothing else. I can run task manager to get to all apps OK, but this is not very useful.I tried running from a previous known good state, but nothing changed. I also tried starting up in safe mode, but only get a black screen.
When i start my computer all i see is the desktop background. No icons, no task bar. After restarting the computer between 3 and 6 times the icons and taskbar will eventually appear.I've been reading up on the problem for around a month now and tried many different things to solve it. Really dont want to format computer. I dont no too much so please be step by step in any anwsers left.
When I log in to my XP home laptop (in regular and safe mode), I am unable to see start menu, desktop icons (however, wallpaper is there and mouse arrow is active) and task bar is missing. Also, pop up the message: wininet.dll is missing (twice). Now I am able to log in safe mode and can see all desktop icons start button and task bar but still I am unable to get all those in regular mode. Meanwhile, my Norton told me that computer has Bloodhound.W32.EP virus but unable to fix it.
I have a major problem. When I regularly start Windows XP home edition. It seems to run just fine, yet the mouse is at an hourglass for a good amount of time. Then, All the icons disappear, Start Menu goes away, Cannot open task manger or run anything. Computer then stalls with DLL.exe and svchost error messages.I ran a spybot scan and adaware. Only coming up with Jupilites and Smitfraud-C.Both have been cleaned. If I can find a way to transfer my HJT file from my laptop to the computer I am currently using, will posted as soon as possible.
My Windows Explorer keeps crashing. I loose my desktop icons, taskbar, tray and start menu. Windows minimize to just above where the taskbar should be. Usually I can re-start the explorer.exe in the task manager. It now flashes and then is gone again. I can't get it back. How can I get to the control panel with no start menu? I've tried an earlier restore point, restarted with last known good configuration. Nothing. I'm running windows XP Home SP2 all updates.
I've recently re-sized my task-bar to hold my usual desktop icons in the quick-launch area and moved the bar to the left of the screen with auto-hide enabled. All was well until recently when it began to remain on-screen for about 1 min when not in focus. Then it recently began to open on start-up at a size of only 1 icon wide instead of the previously set 3 icons wide. I've made no such changes to the configuration and am curious to know if anyone might know why/how it seems to have obtained a "mind of its own"???
I have several unwanted items in my favourites list, both URLs and folders with URLs in them. I cannot right click on them (to delete) and they do not appear in the 'organize favourites' box. Just the favourites that I have added are there.
Just installed RegistryBooster and scanned OK. When computer restarted a RegistryBooster dialogue box appears offering to scan and I want to get rid of it, but can't as there is no apparent way to do so. So can anyone please tell me how to remove it?
I have a number of hidden files which I have forwarded to MY Documents and my Pictures.I want to delete my hidden files but keep the ones I forwarded. What worries me is if i delete hidden ones will the others also be deleted.I was wondering if i changed the names of the ones i want to keep or will they be safe anyway
I downloaded a bunch of spyware by mistake this morning from a link my friend gave to me, he was unaware as well. I was able to get rid of the majority of it, but there are a few things in my registry i am unable to delete, i used spy bot to get rid of most of the spy ware but for some reason it is not detecting the rest, also ad aware detects it but is unable to remove it since it is running in the background, i am unable to find the processs from task manager and end it so i cant delete it from the registry manually. What it is doing is bascially spamming pop ups on my pc every so often, here are the suspected names of the infections : mpise.dll , h22o0cf3ef2.dll , h62o0gf3e62.dll.
This is prob an oldie you get sick of answering, but I've tried to use my windows xp discs to reformat my sony laptop to get rid of everything. The problem is things like Norton antivirus and other programs stay on there. How can I get rid of everythingand start from scratch?
My computer (H.P. Pavilion ze 4900 laptop) is running ver-r-r-ry slow.I have: Defragged, Cleaned up my cookies, Uninstalled unneeded programs, Restored the system to a date prior to the occurrence of the slow running speed,Restarted the computer.I have not: Done a disc clean-up (because I have been given conflicting counsel [re: the safety of doing a disc clean-up] by folks who know more about computers than I do.)
Shut down programs running in the back ground(Although I have lots of programs running in the back ground,I have not shut any of those things down because 1)I dont know how to discriminate between what should and what should not be shut down and 2)I dont how to shut those programs down.)Done a virus sweep or a spy-ware sweep (because those operations take a long time even when the computer is running at normal speed
