Removing Icons From Desktop Without Losing Any Functionality
Jan 15, 2006My desktop is cluttered with icons I want to remove the clutter by removing icons from it.Is there any way out to do this with out losing any functionality?

Removing Desktop Icons Without Remove Program
Mar 14, 2005Some of desktop icons can be removed without actually removing the program they represent, but others, when I right click to remove, will remove the entire program along with the icon. Is there some way I can remove just the icon without removing the program?

Jul 24, 2005Recently my father-in-law installed a program on to my computer. It set up a desktop icon, that did not get removed when it was uninstalled. I can't even right click on it and hit delete because it's not there, nor can I just hit delete. How can it be removed manually. It is a "share-to-web upload folder" from a hp digital camera. I aslo don't have access to the cd to reinstall it and uninstall again. Also I can't get task manager to work, I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete and nothing. I right click on the task bar and click on task manager and nothing. Iwas working a few days ago, don't know what happened, anyway to get it back? I already tried system restore but only goes back a few days.

Dec 12, 2006I don't know what is happening to my XP Pro computer but everytime I reboot the computer, it tells me that windows cannot find my desktop profile and it recreates a new one. This is obviously becoming very annoying and making it very hard to be productive as all my icons are gone etc. I have noticed that no actual programs or files are missing, it is just that all the profiles I set go away. I did a google search and found nothing.

All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. Dec 2, 2004Gateway Solo 600 with 1GB memory and a 60GB drive with 15GB free space. Running WinXP at SP1, Norton AV 2003 but has just expired (2005 ready to install but don't want to compound things just jet), ZoneAlarm. The order of events, although it might not all be related:
Firewire disk drive it reported a handful of files that were not backed up due to a CRC error. I checked the Event Viewer and sure enough it had logged several "Bad Block" on hard disk errors. Ran Scandisk which reported that it couldn't fix. Booted from a Floppy and ran GWSCAN. Quick Test - No Errors Extended Test - Error 0223, Ran Scandisk, It reported some index entries removed due to errors. Deleted affected files and restored from good sources.System was slow to startup.Somewhat slow getting to the desktop Really slow loading the "Post Desktop" programs such as the network adapter icons, Volume Systray Control, Mouse Systray Control, Norton Systray icon Identify all the bad areas and their cause restore full functionality.

Jul 6, 2008I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu,etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..

Jan 23, 2008I have installed MSIE ver 7, Kaspersky ver 7, and now, I cannot delete messages at comcast.net webmail. I uninstalled Kaspersky. Still no good. I do have spybot s&d installed. Its a new OS install. All critical updates are in place. An interesting side note is that if I log into the kids account, I can fully manipulate comcast webmail. Just not from my account (cannot delete messages). I have tried to purge cookies, files, history. No luck. I am suspecting some security setting.

Feb 22, 2007We've just purchased a new monitor for out PC with a better resolution than our previous one. Basically, my dad wants to have his user account set at 1280x768, whereas I want to use the best resolution of the monitor which is 1440x900.
On the previous monitor, I seemed to be able to make it so that different user accounts could have their own resolutions. However, when I've tried changing the resolution in my dad's account, when I go back to my account, it is set as my dad's resolution. If I change it back to mine, then my dad's account changes to mine too.
Is there a way I can make it so that each account can have their own resolution set?
installed a file manager for his mobile phone and it's put a folder on the desktop which I cannot seem to remove. I right click it but there is no delete option for it. Even when I open it, I can't find any options to remove it either. Does any one have any idea as to how I might be able to remove this folder from my desktop? It's appeared on all user accounts

Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows

Didn't select anything, clicked ok. After that every time I click on a folder it would open in acdsee. So I went back there, couldn't find a setting to readjust it, then added a new command to open folders in explorer. Now each folder I click on opens in a new window.

He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.
