Computer Running Very Slow: No Change After Removing Unwanted Things?
Sep 14, 2006My computer (H.P. Pavilion ze 4900 laptop) is running ver-r-r-ry slow.I have: Defragged, Cleaned up my cookies, Uninstalled unneeded programs, Restored the system to a date prior to the occurrence of the slow running speed,Restarted the computer.I have not: Done a disc clean-up (because I have been given conflicting counsel [re: the safety of doing a disc clean-up] by folks who know more about computers than I do.)
Shut down programs running in the back ground(Although I have lots of programs running in the back ground,I have not shut any of those things down because 1)I dont know how to discriminate between what should and what should not be shut down and 2)I dont how to shut those programs down.)Done a virus sweep or a spy-ware sweep (because those operations take a long time even when the computer is running at normal speed
Removing Unwanted Items From Favourites In IE6?
Feb 13, 2006I have several unwanted items in my favourites list, both URLs and folders with URLs in them. I cannot right click on them (to delete) and they do not appear in the 'organize favourites' box. Just the favourites that I have added are there.

Jul 24, 2005Recently my father-in-law installed a program on to my computer. It set up a desktop icon, that did not get removed when it was uninstalled. I can't even right click on it and hit delete because it's not there, nor can I just hit delete. How can it be removed manually. It is a "share-to-web upload folder" from a hp digital camera. I aslo don't have access to the cd to reinstall it and uninstall again. Also I can't get task manager to work, I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete and nothing. I right click on the task bar and click on task manager and nothing. Iwas working a few days ago, don't know what happened, anyway to get it back? I already tried system restore but only goes back a few days.

Mar 18, 2007I have a WD 250gb external HD, i have since switched to a mac and still want to use this HD.however there are 3 files on this drive that seem to be microsoft updates, not sure how they ended up on this drive....i did not place them there....id imagine it was thru one of the many microsoft auto updates i want to try and delete these files, but i get an error saying that i either dont have authority to delete these files , or they are currently in use. they are two folders that are 0 bytes....and have long random numeric and alpha titles such as e7e4e1d6bbb6349...etc.

Sep 23, 2006My computer has been running really well for the longest time. I've had no problems at all. Then just like 2 days ago my computer started running really slow. Whenever I open up a messenger it hangs and then freezes. I ran my spybot detector and there were a few things but I got rid of them. My virus scan was clear and I also ran my disk defragmenter. I'm not sure if I got a virus somehow. I deleted all my cookies and files.

Sep 1, 2009Unusually slow system; unsure where to go from here.machine runs very slowly for the processor and for the amount of processes running.There is some degree of visual skipping/slowness,it is particularly apparent with audio and visual media. Even the startup sound is very drawn out and is characterized by a long, skipping echo. Music skips randomly and even alert noises, (such as the one heard when ending a process) has the same skipping/echo. This happens even when there are few apparent processes running and very little CPU usage (such as 5%), as well as when the system is overloaded (which happens remarkably quickly for the 20-30 processes running).

Mar 29, 2005my work colleagues is having trouble with a slow-running computer i thought I'd look at her startup options and make sure there isn't something running that doesn't need to be. I ran msconfig and looked at what she had going at startup, but only the necessary items were checked there. So I took a look at the services panel, using a list from blackviper.com to make sure her computer's settings matched up with those recommendation. However, one of the services listed isn't on the blackviper.com list: Winkcpw. Nor did I get any hits for the name of the service on either Google or using Yahoo search. I'm wondering if anyone here knows what the program is and whether it should be running at all.

Apr 29, 2008I have windows XP and Automatic Updates on my computer were set off for two months. Now that I'm back at home I turned on the Automatic Updates again, I selected the 'Notify me but don't automatically install them' option. After that, 5 updates where available to download, I only selected 4 of them. When I turned off my computer so that it could download the new updates, it started to download 71 updates. I did not let my computer download them since i do not know where did the other 67 updates come from. And I'm worried that they my use all the space I have left on my local disk (c). The capacity of my c disk is 9.31 GB, I have used 6.38 GB, and I only have 2.92 GB of free space. What can I do, I would like to know more about the 67 updated that I did not selected but I do not know how to see these updates and change them or cancel them. For now I will just turn of my computer with out downloading these updates.

Dec 30, 2004I turned my computer on and 7 new icons appeared on my desktop (they don't appear to be shortcuts) advertising Poker, Card Games, Printer Cartridges, Casino Online, Bingo, Website Hosting. It won?t allow me to delete, drag, right click, or search for them. I have also done a search in DOS under my username/desktop with no luck, I tried the desktop cleanup again they were not listed, I have scanned with Norton Ad-aware and spybot search and destroy, but still they remain. The icons could not be found in my C:Documents and SettingsUserDesktop even with show hidden on.
The icons do not appear in safe mode, and since I have no idea where they are on my computer as I cannot search for them, I could not remove them in safe mode. The icons just link to web sites, so they are not on add-remove progs either. I'm running Windows XP Pro. **UPDATE** 2 IEXPLORE.EXE were found open in processess, when I tried to end one of them, all the icons vanished for a second then popped back up and IEXPLORE.EXE remained in processes, I use firefox not IE !!.. I have no idea what this means, maybe someone will know what to do now?
Can't Delete An Unwanted DLL File
Jun 3, 2005My daughter downloaded a game ( Carmen San diego) awhile back. She decided she didn't want it anymore. She went into add/remove programs and removed it. The shortcut is still on the desktop and when she tries to delete it she gets a messages that it cannot be deleted because it is either write protected or in use with another program.

It did not appear in the Control Panel "Add Or Remove Programs" list and there was no Uninstall option in the program folder, so I attempted to delete the folder and all of its contents but was informed by XP that access to this one dll (hkshext.dll) was denied, and that it might be in use. The Command Line del command responded in the same manner and the Command Line attrib command yields no enlightening information. How might I determine what/who is using this dll and/or how might I remove it? No great import, I suppose, if I just leave it there in the otherwise empty Hot Keyboard Pro folder.

May 8, 2005I can't seem to get rid of the remnants some Nokia programs that my son installed on the PC.
They wouldn't uninstall using the conventional method so I just deleted the folders and used Registry Medic to clean up the mess.
The only thing left is in the add/remove programs list.
I have gone in the registry and in the 'uninstall section' removed all things 'Nokia' but still they remain.
