Removing USB Hardware Prohibits Connecting New USB Device
Apr 14, 2007
If I unplug a USB device--say my Plextor CD/DVD burner or a memory stick--from the USB connection on the front of my Dell Dimension. The drive icon does not disappear from Window's Explorer. And any other device plugged into the front port is not recognized. I have to reboot to free up the ports. The same thing happens with a USB hard drive connected to the a port on the back if I turn it off (I only use it for long term storage of old work projects). Might this be related to the fact that the Remove Hardware icon disappeared from my system tray some time ago after an automatic Windows fix? And Remove Hardware does not appear in the customize notifications list in Taskbar properties.
Might this also be related to the fact that I recently used the Manager program to change drive letters on several USB drives that I use for different projects? I would hate to have to go back to the more or less random assignment of drive letters based that I've been working with for a while. Further possibly pertinent info. My Dell is several years old, and misbehaved badly when I installed XP Service Pack 2 from the MS web site. Twice I tried and twice I uninstalled SP2. A month ago, a local computer store tech gave me another version of the SP2 to try. It's been working fine, until this USB problem arose. I hope I don't have to uninstall SP2, because we upgraded to Office 07, and that requires SP2.
I have Windows XP Profesional SP2 system. I'm encountering a problem with the 'Safely Remove Hardware' feature. When I insert a USB Flash Drive or any other USB Mass Storage device, it functions properly. But, when i Safely Remove that USB device(From the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Taskbar) and then insert it again ,i get the usual 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon at the Taskbar but the device does get displayed in 'My Computer' or any other place and i can't access the USB Mass storage Device. So i have to restart my PC and then only the USB Device becomes accessible from 'My Computer'.
I just purchased a hard drive from someone and reinstalled it on a new computer. The system is working great and everything except one little annoyance that I can't seem to figure out, one of the old user profiles, which isn't even listed under the "User Accounts" is the only one listed in my documents and settings, I can't delete it when I go to Device Manager, the delete button becomes greyed out. The new account that I created is on the login screen when the computer starts but the old account isn't, also the new account isn't even listed in my documents. Does anyone have a solution for this as far as removing the old account?
Insert any USB device to this computer, Computer keeps restarting and it wont stop doing that until I remove the usb device. I tried with all the usb ports on this computer and problem is the same. Even by hooking up a usb keyboard or mouse, computer wont get to the login screen. it keeps on restarting. It wont even go into 'safe mode'.Anyone have any clue whats going on and the solution to fix it?
I have installed a targus 7 port powered USB HUB on my computer. Device manager reports unknown device. I have deleted and it restalled the drived after the system rebooted. Device manager still saying unknown device. Their is not driver needed according to the manufacture. When the PC is booting it does see the IPOD mini and the Flash drive. But once the PC is fully out and login and I look a the device manager is still reporting unlnown device error (code 10).
I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)
Running Windows XP on Emachines ET1161-07. Installed all drivers that I could find, since EMachines does not represent XP. Tried Realtek audio and HD audio, tried Intel, didn't work. Tried NVidia, as it has an NVidia motherboard. Spent too much time on this computer. Can anyone lend a hand? I know it's got something to do with Audio, as there's no audio device detected in Sounds, under Control Panel.Customer has to have computer today.
I gotta a XP Home SP2 Machine was running fine then on boot up sound device not found. went to device mng and no items displayed. System restore had been didabled and Norton disabled as well. Done a spyware scan pull nout so did virus
I've been using a Buslink 40G disk-to-go for about 2 years and love it. Today I plugged it into the USB port and the drive did not display. I've searched forums half the night since this drive contains financial data that hasn't been backed up for a month (yes, bad practice, I know) and I need to get it working. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, updated drivers, removed and reinstalled drivers, rolled back drivers and tried everything short of bios changes I've seen recommended.
I had this problem last time when I fresh installed Windows XP Pro on my computer. I don't know the time, but it happens at least 30 days after I reinstall the OS and software. Today, my computer prompted me to install drivers for a PCI Input Device, but I haven't installed any new hardware for months. Basically, I haven't touched the inside of my computer for that long. So why is Device Manager prompting me to install this mystery device? Hardware ID shows that it is from vendor 1102, which is Creative, and I have an Audigy 1. Also, my FireWire port is Code 10, the device cannot start. So I'm thinking the mystery device is the same firewire port. But why show up as a separate device? I tried removing the devices and restarting the computer, but they return to haunt me again. The device properties for the PCI Input Device says PCI SLOT 7, AND I DONT HAVE A 7th slot! Can someone help me, please? Device manager shows my 1394 Net Adapter with a yellow exclamation, and it has code 10, device cannot start. There is an unknown device, the PCI Input Device, which doesn't allow me to install any drivers for it, yet it has the creative Vendor ID 1102. It shows itself as being PCI Slot 7.
I have a feeling that this is simply a case of some registry settings which need adding/modifying/deleting but exactly which ones and what values I do not know. No, I haven't tried re-installing XP.
The system seems to be very stable at this point in time. I run Norton Utilities and other maintenance sw as well as have a firewall/pest remover/anti-virus. Behavior - most things work fine on the USB ports, either the hub or direct connects. One digital camera will only work when direct connected(not thru the hub). I have a scanner that will only work on a 2003 Compaq Presario, but not on the whitebox on any port. Also, I have had two devices that won't work at all. I have noticed that the USB mass storage device icon doesn't seem to be present now when I attach a flash drive. This is recent behavior and doesn't predate every USB problem.
Im using a dial up connection, when turn my pc on and go online there is no problem but once I disconnect and want to go online again when I try to connect a message appear Error633 the modem or other connecting device is already in use or not configured properly to connect again I always need to restart the computer. Ive already reinstall my modem but its still the same.
I'm attempting to remotely connect to a laptop running Vista, and I'm using XP. The problem is that I don't know how to do it. And She can't access the internet from her system. She has contacted her internet provider, and they have assured her that everything checks out on their end, but she still can't connect.I was going to remotely download some software from my computer and send it to hers.
im having lan connection(win xp) and im trying to connecy another system in wan, but im unable to connect . plz tell exact procedure to connect lan to wan using remote desktop conncetion or by using any other software
When my Mom proffers an invitation for remote assisance using MSN Messenger 7.0 she recieves the following: "Remote Assistance cannot connect because <user> denied the request for help". I've looked at some of the other, similar, threads posted on connectivity issues with 7.0 in these forums, but nothing seems to help. We can send and recieve each others video and audio. Also, the games work. I've tried to do this with a couple of other freinds with the same result. Before we were forced into the 7.0 upgrade there were no problems. I've checked my settings to allow RA, reinstalled 7.0, tried using Windows Messenger, and have tried doing this with my firewall (ZoneAlarm) disabled.

I have a HP nc8230 computer running Windows XP Home edition SP3.The computer has built in Bluetooth support that works fine with my cellular phone and mouse.I also have a Motorola H390 Bluetooth headset and I want to use it with my computer (mainly for Skype calls) .I'm able to pair the headset with the computer but when I try to hear (or speak) I can't hear anything.
Sometimes I have to re-install windows without uninstalling my programs. When I do this-- the programs are still there, BUT, XP can't connect to them. I have to reinstall the programs. How do I avoid this and/or what do I need to do to get everything back as it was? This is NOT for a complete format and reload.
I am having trouble connecting to web browers. I am connected to the internet, and can still connect to MSN, AIM etc., most of the time.Basic Info:I am using Windows XP (version 5.1.26, Home edition) I am using a cable modem I am also using a router for internet sharing between my desktop computer (directly connected to router) and my laptop computer.I scanned my system by running network diagnostics to gether more information. The scanning traced a problem under "Network Adapters". More specifically, it says "(FAILED)" next to the IP Address, and "(PASSED)" next to everything else: Default Gateway, DHCPServer, DNSServerSearchOrder.I gather the IP address is the problem (though the IP address itself appears normal, beginning with 192.168).
A Wanadoo-a789 Model: dv4210-wa as a router and 2 computers both running windows xp and were both reinstalled not long ago, for a while they were able to talk to each other but for some reasson they just can't see each other now, they can't even ping each other. This is even with the windows and router firewall turned off.
Basically ive been having problems with a computer for a while, everytime i connect my iPod or 512MB Memory stick it freezes my computer, but my printer is working fine through the usb?! It seems to be anything mass storage i think. I have reinstalled XP Home, downloaded all the updates, downloaded all the drivers for the computer from the Packard Bells website, deleted all the devices in device manager and let them find themself again but dont seem to do no good!
I finally relented and installed service pack 2 recently and my computer has been EXTREMELY sluggish and has frozen up a few times. Currently, two LAN icons appear in the tray at the bottom, one with my DSL connection, the other saying there is no connection
I have a Gateway 560GE 3.0 GHZ Windows XP. I don't understand what is going on with my computer connecting to the internet.
