This Device Cannot Start Code 10 USB Mass Storage Device
Jul 21, 2005
I've been using a Buslink 40G disk-to-go for about 2 years and love it. Today I plugged it into the USB port and the drive did not display. I've searched forums half the night since this drive contains financial data that hasn't been backed up for a month (yes, bad practice, I know) and I need to get it working. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, updated drivers, removed and reinstalled drivers, rolled back drivers and tried everything short of bios changes I've seen recommended.

Should this be disabled in Win Xp Home under device manager. If I enable it I get the Safe to remove Hardware icon in the system tray? Lower rt corner of screen. Another thing, if I enable the device, I get 4 generic disks listed under "Disk Drive" in device manager.

I'm having problems with 2 of my computers recognizing USB mass storage devices. They used to work just fine but not any more. When I plug them in (I've tried my Palm - have program to recognize it as a drive - and a new card reader and my camera) I get a message that new hardware is found (mass storage device) but then it takes me to the Found New Hardware Wizard and none of the choices I select (Install Automatically, search web, etc) find any drivers. The crazy thing is, though, that when it did work, the first time I plugged them in the Found New Hardware Wizard didn't come up but it installed what it needed automatically. I'm thinking there is a corrupt driver and was wondering if there was a way to get just that driver back without reinstalling Windows. Also, what's strange is that two of my computers work this way. My one (other) computer accepts everything just fine.

I have an external USB 2.0 case with a 160GB HD that was working just fine until a couple of days ago when I stopped the drive and unplugged it from the PC. Next time I connected the drive to the same PC, I got a message saying "There was a problem installing your device" and in the Properties window for the device a Code 10 appears. I connected the same drive to a different computer and it is working perfectly. I uninstalled the device and reinstalled it again but the problem still persists.

Yeah, I know, I've read all the Google results about "open files" and "locking handles" too, but bear with me and keep reading. This is on a WinXP Pro SP3 desktop, current with all critical updates. I have a laptop HDD that I've installed in an external case for USB 2.0 connection to my PC. It connects to the PC as drive letter D:. It works fine backing up my data until it comes time to disconnect it. Then, when I try to Safely Remove Hardware, I get the error msg in the topic title, along with "The device 'Initio 0M9AT00 USB Device' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." So I fire up Unlocker 1.9.0 and it says "No Locking handle found." Then I fire up Process Explorer v12.04 and Search for D: - I get the result "0 matching items." So WinXP thinks some program is still accessing it, but what? I need some other ideas or tools to figure out what is going on. Up to this point, I've just been shutting down all open application programs and pulling the USB cable and one more interesting tidbit - when I connect this same HDD to my Win7 x64 laptop and click on safely remove hardware, Win7 releases the device properly and I can safely remove it.

Every so often, when I start my computer, the graphics controller does not register correctly and my computer loads some default monitor controller and gives this error that's in the Subject heading. The font turns huge and annoying. I've reloaded, updated, deleted, changed, etc. to the graphics controller. Nothing cures it, except, I was able to do a restore and get it to load correctly. Sometimes it would take a couple of times to do this. Right now, it's on it's 5th time and I'm getting annoyed. It's not working. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

This is not really a tweak as such, just a very simple thing you could do with your digital camera that most people don't think about.Do you have a digital camera that shows up as a removable storage device in explorer? Well, start using it as one!You can use the memory cards on your camera for storing documents mp3's or whatever you choose to store there. Perfect if you need to bring some files to a friend, but the files won't fit on a diskette and you don't have a CD burner - just save it on the camera!

I am trying to get my usb flash drive to work, and I get this error message. Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer (Code 47). To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again. The only problem is, is that i don't have the device plugged in. I tried uninstalling the device and restarting, but there it is again at the start up. When I plug the device in, the computer will not read it.

I get the following message when I go to device manager and look at my cd rom drive, which has an ! on it."A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"Recommended resolution The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required, and if reinstalling or upgrading does not work, change the start type in the registry using Registry Editor. For more information, see the Registry Reference in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit I have done extensive research on this and all the work arounds that have been suggested do not work for me. The only course of action I feel is possible for me is to edit the registry. I have not been able to find any directions on how to do this short of buying microsoft's "Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit" which is suggested in all my research. This book is Hugely expensive.

Windows XP. I have bought two keyboards, one USB, the other ps/2, but neither has changed a thing as far as eliminating the code 39 message I am getting when I go to device driver. There's also the exclamation point in yellow, that hasn't changed either. Things I have done include uninstalling and reinstalling, but since I can't do anything more than copy and paste, there isn't much I have been able to do as far as msconfig or safe mode. (I've tried to go to diagnostic mode via misconfig but it asks for an administrator password and I have learned passwords can't be copied and pasted).

I have HL-ST CD-RW GCE-8481 B and IDE-DVD Rom 16x I run windows xp home edition. A few days ago I had to do a system restore, but couldn't go back any farther than the month of July.. At any rate, both drives show up in Device Manager as well as my computer. They both light up, but nothing plays. I have unistalled both of them, windows finds new hardware, but the same error message is still there "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware, the driver may be corrupted or missing code 39" I have read about going into the registry and I usualy get into alot of trouble with that. What I would like to do is a complete recovery using the hp recovery disks that I made when I got the HP. Windows came pre- installed with no disks other than the ones I created. My question if I do this will I be able to use the disks since nothing is playing in either of these drives? My computer is a Desktop , HP Pavillion model is 220N.

My computer no longer recognizes my cd drive or even brand new dvd drive. It says it has sucessfully loaded the device driver but cannot find the hardware device, code 41. I have tried the troubleshooter, updating the driver, checking the conections, uninstalling / reinstalling the device. Bought a new DVD drive (good enough reason) but it has the exact same message. Any ideas on what else I could try before having to pay the boffins to have a look?

So I had this awesome post and it was removed by ctrl z. Touch pads on laptops FTL I tell ya. I'm going to make this short and sweet. I'm using two 150gb raptor HDD's connected with SATA. I had windows vista ultimate x64 installed but I didn't like it so I decided to buy windows xp MCE 2005 and here is my problem I'm trying to do the install but it continues to give me the BSOD. Even after I read a thread about the same issue, I couldnt get pass the BSOD and the topic was locked so here I am.
My raid is set to auto detect but I dont have a raid setup since I'm allowing xp to do this for me. I did have one setup for vista but I deleted it thinking I needed to start fresh for xp am i right? I boot from CD and tried to hit F6 but nothing happens. I let it go and continue with the loading. Here's where I'm at now. Windows Setup Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices isntalled in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently , setup will load support for the following mass storage devices.....

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

Running Windows XP on Emachines ET1161-07. Installed all drivers that I could find, since EMachines does not represent XP. Tried Realtek audio and HD audio, tried Intel, didn't work. Tried NVidia, as it has an NVidia motherboard. Spent too much time on this computer. Can anyone lend a hand? I know it's got something to do with Audio, as there's no audio device detected in Sounds, under Control Panel.Customer has to have computer today.

I had this problem last time when I fresh installed Windows XP Pro on my computer. I don't know the time, but it happens at least 30 days after I reinstall the OS and software. Today, my computer prompted me to install drivers for a PCI Input Device, but I haven't installed any new hardware for months. Basically, I haven't touched the inside of my computer for that long. So why is Device Manager prompting me to install this mystery device? Hardware ID shows that it is from vendor 1102, which is Creative, and I have an Audigy 1. Also, my FireWire port is Code 10, the device cannot start. So I'm thinking the mystery device is the same firewire port. But why show up as a separate device? I tried removing the devices and restarting the computer, but they return to haunt me again. The device properties for the PCI Input Device says PCI SLOT 7, AND I DONT HAVE A 7th slot! Can someone help me, please? Device manager shows my 1394 Net Adapter with a yellow exclamation, and it has code 10, device cannot start. There is an unknown device, the PCI Input Device, which doesn't allow me to install any drivers for it, yet it has the creative Vendor ID 1102. It shows itself as being PCI Slot 7.

The system seems to be very stable at this point in time. I run Norton Utilities and other maintenance sw as well as have a firewall/pest remover/anti-virus. Behavior - most things work fine on the USB ports, either the hub or direct connects. One digital camera will only work when direct connected(not thru the hub). I have a scanner that will only work on a 2003 Compaq Presario, but not on the whitebox on any port. Also, I have had two devices that won't work at all. I have noticed that the USB mass storage device icon doesn't seem to be present now when I attach a flash drive. This is recent behavior and doesn't predate every USB problem.

Last night I installed ATiTool 0.24 over my 0.25 version (stupidly). I also did a BIOS update and installed Cat6.3 and then AVIVO converter. When I rebooted, I had this new PCI device requiring a driver, but it's an unknown device and doing an auto update helped me.I can't get rid of this pesky PCI device (tried uninstalling but Windows detects it again after restart/boot-up). All my stuff is working, so I don't know where this critter came from?

Anyone know how I can rename a device in device manager, (or the registry), so it doesn't show #2 after the device.I used the leadtek driver uninstall tool last night. And it removed the drivers I had for this Leadtek Deluxe tuner alright.BUT it also renamed my onboard Gigabit LAN (onboard) to #2 my scanner to #2,
and removed my Nvidia drivers for the video card. And reverted the videocard drivers to MS Nvidia drivers.I managed to fix the scanner entry by uninstalling the drivers, then rebooting and reinstalling the drivers. And I managed to fix the videocard drivers, by reinstalling the Nvidia drivers. So, yup, anyone have any idea how I can change the board LAN, so it doesnt have #2 after it? sing XP Pro SP2
