View 3 RepliesYeah, I know, I've read all the Google results about "open files" and "locking handles" too, but bear with me and keep reading. This is on a WinXP Pro SP3 desktop, current with all critical updates. I have a laptop HDD that I've installed in an external case for USB 2.0 connection to my PC. It connects to the PC as drive letter D:. It works fine backing up my data until it comes time to disconnect it. Then, when I try to Safely Remove Hardware, I get the error msg in the topic title, along with "The device 'Initio 0M9AT00 USB Device' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." So I fire up Unlocker 1.9.0 and it says "No Locking handle found." Then I fire up Process Explorer v12.04 and Search for D: - I get the result "0 matching items." So WinXP thinks some program is still accessing it, but what? I need some other ideas or tools to figure out what is going on. Up to this point, I've just been shutting down all open application programs and pulling the USB cable and one more interesting tidbit - when I connect this same HDD to my Win7 x64 laptop and click on safely remove hardware, Win7 releases the device properly and I can safely remove it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using a Buslink 40G disk-to-go for about 2 years and love it. Today I plugged it into the USB port and the drive did not display. I've searched forums half the night since this drive contains financial data that hasn't been backed up for a month (yes, bad practice, I know) and I need to get it working. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, updated drivers, removed and reinstalled drivers, rolled back drivers and tried everything short of bios changes I've seen recommended.
View 1 Replies View RelatedShould this be disabled in Win Xp Home under device manager. If I enable it I get the Safe to remove Hardware icon in the system tray? Lower rt corner of screen. Another thing, if I enable the device, I get 4 generic disks listed under "Disk Drive" in device manager.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with 2 of my computers recognizing USB mass storage devices. They used to work just fine but not any more. When I plug them in (I've tried my Palm - have program to recognize it as a drive - and a new card reader and my camera) I get a message that new hardware is found (mass storage device) but then it takes me to the Found New Hardware Wizard and none of the choices I select (Install Automatically, search web, etc) find any drivers. The crazy thing is, though, that when it did work, the first time I plugged them in the Found New Hardware Wizard didn't come up but it installed what it needed automatically. I'm thinking there is a corrupt driver and was wondering if there was a way to get just that driver back without reinstalling Windows. Also, what's strange is that two of my computers work this way. My one (other) computer accepts everything just fine.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB 2.0 case with a 160GB HD that was working just fine until a couple of days ago when I stopped the drive and unplugged it from the PC. Next time I connected the drive to the same PC, I got a message saying "There was a problem installing your device" and in the Properties window for the device a Code 10 appears. I connected the same drive to a different computer and it is working perfectly. I uninstalled the device and reinstalled it again but the problem still persists.

I'm using two 150gb raptor HDD's connected with SATA. I had windows vista ultimate x64 installed but I didn't like it so I decided to buy windows xp MCE 2005 and here is my problem I'm trying to do the install but it continues to give me the BSOD. Even after I read a thread about the same issue, I couldnt get pass the BSOD and the topic was locked so here I am.
My raid is set to auto detect but I dont have a raid setup since I'm allowing xp to do this for me. I did have one setup for vista but I deleted it thinking I needed to start fresh for xp am i right? I boot from CD and tried to hit F6 but nothing happens. I let it go and continue with the loading. Here's where I'm at now. Windows Setup Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices isntalled in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently , setup will load support for the following mass storage devices.....

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get my usb flash drive to work, and I get this error message. Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer (Code 47). To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again. The only problem is, is that i don't have the device plugged in. I tried uninstalling the device and restarting, but there it is again at the start up. When I plug the device in, the computer will not read it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI get the following message when I go to device manager and look at my cd rom drive, which has an ! on it."A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"Recommended resolution The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required, and if reinstalling or upgrading does not work, change the start type in the registry using Registry Editor. For more information, see the Registry Reference in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit I have done extensive research on this and all the work arounds that have been suggested do not work for me. The only course of action I feel is possible for me is to edit the registry. I have not been able to find any directions on how to do this short of buying microsoft's "Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit" which is suggested in all my research. This book is Hugely expensive.

BSODs have varied but typically (but not always) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with STOP: 0x0000008E or STOP: 0x0000000A. Also, in Device Manager, Ports, Communications Port (COM2) I have a yellow exclamation mark, Code 10 error.I am not sure if these issues are linked.I know it could be a Ram issue but I have run memtest86 with no errors reported.Besides I am reluctant to replace the Ram or motherboard as I wouldn't really know what I was doing.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy friend just installed XP on his computer using the CD and now, ironically, XP doesn't detect the CD-Rom drive on the system. No CD-Rom drive in either Device Manager, Windows Explorer, or My Computer. The Add Hardware Wizard doesn't detect a CD-rom drive either. All the cables are intact as well. What could be wrong or do I need to provide more specific information on his system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is not really a tweak as such, just a very simple thing you could do with your digital camera that most people don't think about.Do you have a digital camera that shows up as a removable storage device in explorer? Well, start using it as one!You can use the memory cards on your camera for storing documents mp3's or whatever you choose to store there. Perfect if you need to bring some files to a friend, but the files won't fit on a diskette and you don't have a CD burner - just save it on the camera!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had this problem last time when I fresh installed Windows XP Pro on my computer. I don't know the time, but it happens at least 30 days after I reinstall the OS and software. Today, my computer prompted me to install drivers for a PCI Input Device, but I haven't installed any new hardware for months. Basically, I haven't touched the inside of my computer for that long. So why is Device Manager prompting me to install this mystery device? Hardware ID shows that it is from vendor 1102, which is Creative, and I have an Audigy 1. Also, my FireWire port is Code 10, the device cannot start. So I'm thinking the mystery device is the same firewire port. But why show up as a separate device? I tried removing the devices and restarting the computer, but they return to haunt me again. The device properties for the PCI Input Device says PCI SLOT 7, AND I DONT HAVE A 7th slot! Can someone help me, please? Device manager shows my 1394 Net Adapter with a yellow exclamation, and it has code 10, device cannot start. There is an unknown device, the PCI Input Device, which doesn't allow me to install any drivers for it, yet it has the creative Vendor ID 1102. It shows itself as being PCI Slot 7.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to track down drivers for my Packard Bell Imedia 3082 XP Pro service pack 3 desktop. I have been to the packard bell support/drivers site and found 5 out of 7 missing drivers. I had tried the suggested site previously but when i clicked on download products i kept getting a "server not found message". Tried it yesterday again and it worked so thanks to the people who suggested that. Problem now is I am still missing my ethernet controller driver and my multimedia controller driver. I dont know the exact device details in order to download the two missing drivers. to tracking down the ethernet and multimedia controller. I have downloaded and installed the multimedia driver from the Pack Bell Imedia 3082 site but still it is yellow with exclamation mark. And i still cant connect to my Belkin router. So in brief: I need the device details to my ethernet controller and multimedia controller so that i can track down the drivers.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed a fresh copy of WIN2000 on my IBM Thinkpad A21m but I am having a problem setting up a device in Device Mangager. I have no idea what is going on.
When i reboot the laptop it prompts me that it has found a new piece of hardware and it wants me to install the driver for it. The problem is that I have no idea what device it is since all the devices that should be working are working - so i don't know what to do.
The clues that I have noticed that might help:
- the laptop takes a LOOOONG time to boot up (3 or 4 mins), and is sort of sluggish in operation (compared to how it ran when i bought it)
- my internet connection is super slow ( I have a DSL router that serves 3 computers incl. mine, the other two have XP and everythign runs smooth)
- the unknown device says it is located on the the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller"
Would any one know what Device this "Unknown Device" is??? I just need to know so i can install the driver so my system can run properly.
A friend of mine has a 4 yr. old PC running XP Home with 128Mb of memory. He's had problems with programs aborting recently. I tried to run Device Manager to make sure there were no issues there. It briefly brought the screen up, then it went away. The same thing happened to Task Manager when I tried to see what was running and how much memory was being used. Anybody ever see this behavior before? I might try installing a memory cleaner pgm (ie. Memturbo), but I'm not sure I would even be able to get it to run. The hard drive amd memory seem to have no errors.
