View 1 RepliesA friend of mine at work has problems sharing external usb hard drives connected to his laptop. He is running XP pro, and when he attempts to share a drive connected through usb, giving everyone full control it lets no one in. Not even he can, and he is the creator/owner of the share. I'm pretty sure its not a permissions issue, since it gives the same error when I try to browse it and I have domain admin rights.
This has happened with three separate drives, all of which can be shared when connected to any other pc than his. ( I have tried all three on four separate computers, making the share the exact same way with full access. The computer can see the share just fine, it just denies permission to access it either from the computer that created the share, or from any other computer on the network.
I Setup a user on Server A {Names for Examples} and setup user shares on Server A with no problems.
I login to Server B and go to setup a share, Server B shows the user as Disabled in the permissions.
But Server A where the active directory is shows it as enabled and the network allows the user to login.
It seems to be just a display bug. Or is it something more?
I have 3 XP Home systems networked together. All can access the drive and directory shares of each other.I also have an XP Pro on the same network, and none of the XP Home systems can access the shares of the XP Pro system. Not even the Shared Documents folder.I've looked at the drive/directory Permissions and Security and can't find anything obviously wrong. So I tried enabling Simple File Sharing on the XP Pro system, and same thing. All of the XP Home systems are denied access to the XP Pro shares. What do I need to do to allow the XP Home systems to access the shares of the XP Pro system?
I have a laptop running Windows XP with Wi-Fi access. I have a desktop running Windows XP with a cable modem. There is no router in. I would like to share my printer that I have connected to my desktop over the Internet so that I can print from my laptop anywhere.Does anyone here have any concrete, non-RDP idea, that will enable me to do this in a secure way such that no unauthorized person will be able to print junk, porn and the like on my desktop printer?

When I downloaded the updated drivers for my hp scanner software, an icon appeared on my desktop and if I right click it to delete it my computer freezes. If I drag it to the recycle bin or any other folder it just duplicates it and it is still on the desktop. I can't find anywhere else where I could delete it from the registry for example or add/delete programs list. I can't rename it , to try to delete it, because of the freezing issue. I will never use it so It bothers me that its there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedTwo computers running windows xp professional and each computer has 3 different NIC cards. 1 wireless, 1 wired through switch and 1 wired directly. I used the network setup wizard to configure file sharing however neither computer can see the other's shared folders. The only firewall running is the default windows firewall. I suspect it has something to do with the different NIC cards and it is trying to find shared folders using the wireless as opposed to through the LAN.

If your running server versions, add the following reg_dword in the location shown and set it to "0". This will help keep an icmp re-direct attack from taking over your server. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters] "EnableICMPRedirect"=dword:00000000 Works in both Win2k and XP
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a question about the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo on Windows XP Pro. I am attempting to get the task manager to open when the user hits ctrl-alt-del instead of the normal "Security Options" window (with the 'lock computer' options etc). The problem I see is that the only way to do this appears to be by enabling the Welcome Screen. how to get the Ctrl-Alt-Del to open task manager no matter what? I would even be happy completely disabling the ability to hit ctrl-alt-del.
The reason I am doing this is because I have some XP machines running some custom vendor software. This software will crash if the screen locks or the "Security Options" window is launched (Absurd, but apparently this is a bug in the software they can't fix...). There is no hope for the vendor to fix the bug, so I need to find a way to prevent the crash. Sometimes the tool will run for 300-400 hours, so if someone accidentally hits ctrl-alt-del it could possibly ruin hundreds of hours of tests.
