Redirect Many Shortcuts Easily/ Rename The Drive?
Nov 17, 2006
I recently installed a photo management software onto my notebook, which I also have on a pc. I have over 11,000 files that had previously been tagged on the pc, and the shortcut to them pointed to drive F. The drive they now reside on is drive D and I cannot rename the drive to F because that would cause other problems. Short of going into each shortcut and redoing the properties, does anyone know of a program I can buy/download to do this for me as a batch process?

If you (like me) would like to be able to rename the Recycle Bin to something else (Trash, Waste, Shredder, etc) then this tweak will make it easy to do so. Now save this text file as a .reg file, such as "Rename Recycle Bin.reg" and put it wherever you like. Double click on the file, and when it asks you if you want to import it into the registry, choose Yes. You'll notice a new option in the right-click menu to Rename the Recycle Bin. You can also rename it by highlighing the Bin and hitting F2, or by highlighting it and clicking on the file name (just like renaming any other file.If you want to turn off this new feature, make another .reg file with the same content as above, but change the first number in the "Attributes"=hex: line from 50 to 40 and import that file into the registry.

To rename a group of files or folders in WinXP, open the explorer folder that contains the files and do the following:
(be careful not to include any critical windows system files or folders when applying this technique. back up with system restore first if you're not sure. also, it only makes sense to apply it to files of the same type.)
1. Highlight the files and/or folders to be renamed (remember to hold down the CTRL key to select non-adjacent files); or hold CTRL-A to select all the files and folders in a given folder
2. Let the mouse hover over the file that you wish to be the first in the series

How do I create network shortcuts in My Network Places? There are several computers on my network and on them, specific specific drives and specific folders that I use frequently. I'd like them to show up on all the computers, but I don't know how to create them? A second, related question, can I safely delete shortcuts that appear there that I don't use?

As I'm sure you know, when you install most games, they create a desktop shortcut. However, these never work on my machine. Clicking them always pops up a message that says that the CD/DVD is not found, and it can't be located no matter how many times you hit "retry." The only way to start a game is to hit eject, then close the tray again. Even this just takes you to the disc's main menu rather than making the short-cut work. Now, I realize that I can just eject/insert the disk, or click the exe on the disk itself to play each time...I'm just curious as to why the game-installed shortcuts never work.

I'm looking for a way to create click-able Icons/shortcuts for various keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+..., etc.).
[My mouse is very acessable, but my keyboard is not. I know about various on-screen keyboards; but I would prefer clickable Icons that I could put in my quick launch toolbar, for example.]
Is this possible to do within XP, or with some program I can install

In Windows XP, for an individual file, you can right-click an individual file, and then click Properties, then Summary, then enter the comments and keywords. But this is very cumbersome. Is there an easier way? I'd like to be able to enter the same keywords for multiple files at the same time (Explorer won't let you), and/or just click the file and type the information in a side-pane.

When I try to go to my homepage "hometab.bellsouth.net" it will not go. I get a flashing "DR.Redirect" and that is all it will do, sit there and flash. Also I can not go to my bank account, it will not let me log on. I can go to most everywhere else on my computer and also on the internet. Have I gotten something set wrong in my security settings or is there some type of a virus that does this. Norton Antivirus can't find any virus.

I have an application that makes a connection to a certain IP/Port on the net. I was hoping that theres a way i can tell windows to redirect any connection attempt to that IP to 127.0.0.1 so i can see what it's doing. I've played with the HOSTS file but that obviously doesn't effect anything.

If your running server versions, add the following reg_dword in the location shown and set it to "0". This will help keep an icmp re-direct attack from taking over your server. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters] "EnableICMPRedirect"=dword:00000000 Works in both Win2k and XP

I have a question about the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo on Windows XP Pro. I am attempting to get the task manager to open when the user hits ctrl-alt-del instead of the normal "Security Options" window (with the 'lock computer' options etc). The problem I see is that the only way to do this appears to be by enabling the Welcome Screen. how to get the Ctrl-Alt-Del to open task manager no matter what? I would even be happy completely disabling the ability to hit ctrl-alt-del.
The reason I am doing this is because I have some XP machines running some custom vendor software. This software will crash if the screen locks or the "Security Options" window is launched (Absurd, but apparently this is a bug in the software they can't fix...). There is no hope for the vendor to fix the bug, so I need to find a way to prevent the crash. Sometimes the tool will run for 300-400 hours, so if someone accidentally hits ctrl-alt-del it could possibly ruin hundreds of hours of tests.

One of my computers is a Compaq desktop running Windows XP Home SP2. The My Documents folder is located at C:Documents and SettingsCompaq_AdministratorMy Documents. I want to rename the Compaq_Administrator folder but when I try Windows tells me that it is a Windows system folder and that it can't be renamed. The reason that I want to rename it is that I just installed Network Magic to make it a little easier for my family to navigate the home network. When I share folders, they come up with the family friendly names that I had setup for each computer along with the folders that are shared. Folders such as Documents, Music, etc. The folders that are shared by the Compaq computer come up as Compaq_Administrator Documents, etc. That computer's name and user logon are family friendly to match the theme that I have used for all of my computers. Is there some way to rename that folder even though Windows doesn't seem to want me to?

Mostly just move stuff from My Documents (may be called HP Administrators Documents), Favorites (Internet Explorer), Desktop (files that were on the old Desktop, best not to move shortcuts though). If you use Firefox, your old profile and bookmarks will be here:C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles andomname.default
The profile under Administrator.ComputerName will have a different randomname.default folder, so you can't just copy the folder. You can copy the contents of this folder to your new profile folder, overwriting the current profile,

As of yesterday, I am no longer able to rename subfolders within the My Documents Folder. As suggested here I have tried right-click, and F2 but no luck. Ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot and system is free of spyware. The option is not available using the File menu. I know have been able to do this in the past using the above methods because I still see the folders I have created using right-click. When I select File>New, I can add a "new folder" but I cannot rename it. Any ideas and why is this happening all of sudden?

For this question, I have about 7217 files that each have strange filenames. For this, how can I rename all files at once, with each file with its own random name?(Preferably a random string of numbers.) How can I do this so I don't have to manually edit each file?

I've got a very specific task in mind: I'm creating a CD full of mp3's which will play on my portable cd player. BUT: for it to 'see' the mp3s, all the file names have to be preceded by 3 digit track numbers, i.e. 001, 002, NOT 1, 2, or 01, 02.
Rather than re-label 'em all by hand, I'd like to use the rename utility. The only problem is that the rename utility doesn't 'add' the zeroes in front, it 'overlays' the zeroes over the existing label, so I get a bunch of files all numbered '00'.

See attached screen shot. The drives: E, F, G, H, are all parts of my multi-card reader. One is for MemoryStick, another is SD Cards, CompactFlash, etc. Would it be alright to rename these to something more recognizable at a glance? (for example, rename "Removable Disk (H)" to "SD Card") Or will it somehow mess up the way the drives read the cards?
