Disable ICMP Redirect For Security
Aug 12, 2002
If your running server versions, add the following reg_dword in the location shown and set it to "0". This will help keep an icmp re-direct attack from taking over your server. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters] "EnableICMPRedirect"=dword:00000000 Works in both Win2k and XP

I was clicking around, trying to reduce the security setting in Windows in order to download a needed .exe file. Can't remember what I did but now a dialogue box opens for every .exe file I try to use. This brought to my attention the regsvr32.exe file that looks like its not supposed to be in the system32 folder and could be malware. issues: turning off the dialogue box that opens everytime i open a program and identifying and deleting malware especially the regsvr32.exe.I notice the regsvr32 isn't listed as a running process in the HJT log - because I cancelled it in the dialogue box instead of allowing it to run. Which is a good thing. I'd like to return to normal and disable the open file dialoge box, but remove regsvr32 first so it doesn't run automatically.

I'm not sure why but there has been an annoying increase in the number of those Windows Security Information messages that pop up requiring me to select Yes before I can proceed with what I'm doing. To be specific, the message is named in the upper left hand corner "Security Information" and the messages states: "This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?" It then requires me to select "yes" in order to continue. I had to click it three times in one instance just to logoff the web site I was using. Is there anyway to disable this "feature" as I can never recall a time when I haven't selected "yes".

How can I disable the windows service that prompts me when an executable file is from any unknown publisher? The attached image is a screen shot of the security warning. I don't care about any of the associated risks with disabling this, I've already disabled the windows firewall and security center, I just find this pop-up quite aggravating and would like to know how to make it stop

When I try to go to my homepage "hometab.bellsouth.net" it will not go. I get a flashing "DR.Redirect" and that is all it will do, sit there and flash. Also I can not go to my bank account, it will not let me log on. I can go to most everywhere else on my computer and also on the internet. Have I gotten something set wrong in my security settings or is there some type of a virus that does this. Norton Antivirus can't find any virus.

I have an application that makes a connection to a certain IP/Port on the net. I was hoping that theres a way i can tell windows to redirect any connection attempt to that IP to 127.0.0.1 so i can see what it's doing. I've played with the HOSTS file but that obviously doesn't effect anything.

I recently installed a photo management software onto my notebook, which I also have on a pc. I have over 11,000 files that had previously been tagged on the pc, and the shortcut to them pointed to drive F. The drive they now reside on is drive D and I cannot rename the drive to F because that would cause other problems. Short of going into each shortcut and redoing the properties, does anyone know of a program I can buy/download to do this for me as a batch process?

I have a question about the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo on Windows XP Pro. I am attempting to get the task manager to open when the user hits ctrl-alt-del instead of the normal "Security Options" window (with the 'lock computer' options etc). The problem I see is that the only way to do this appears to be by enabling the Welcome Screen. how to get the Ctrl-Alt-Del to open task manager no matter what? I would even be happy completely disabling the ability to hit ctrl-alt-del.
The reason I am doing this is because I have some XP machines running some custom vendor software. This software will crash if the screen locks or the "Security Options" window is launched (Absurd, but apparently this is a bug in the software they can't fix...). There is no hope for the vendor to fix the bug, so I need to find a way to prevent the crash. Sometimes the tool will run for 300-400 hours, so if someone accidentally hits ctrl-alt-del it could possibly ruin hundreds of hours of tests.

I haven't been to this site for a while and I noticed I'm getting Security Warnings that my security settings has blocked of an ActiveX install. I know how to change those settings, but am reluctant to do so. Can anyone shed some light on this. I occasionally will get similar warnings on other sites, but it is consistant on this one. Once in a while IE6 will hang up on this and I'll have to got to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get out of it.

many of the security holes found in software (especially Microsoft Windows) might have been deliberately put there as back doors into our computers for easy access by our governments. I guess my question is this. Will total, absolute, 100% security ever be possible or will our government always demand a back door in? It just seems that if any back door exists, it will eventually be discovered and exploited.

I have attached a copy of my HJT. Would really appreciate if it can be run through to see if there is anything that I can disable in my start up. The computer that I am using is being shared and I have become concerned over some stuffs. In Service Pack 2, a firewall is included right? Now there is this Zone Alarm downloaded too a few months ago. Is that a firewall program? There is also a Norton Personal Firewall that comes with the PC I know that the anti virus has expired but this firewall thing is still working right? At times like this, I wished I have more knowledge on computers but lucky me.I have you Guys at Tech Support to enlighten.
