Jan 12, 2009
I am trying to get my PC to automatically boot up once it recieves a power source. My reason is that I am using a small pc as a server to a salon server and i work elsewhere off site so if the power were to go out the salon staff wouldn't know how to get the machine back up.

My Computer is stuck in some rebooting cycle. I have XP home edition. Every time I log in it shows my desktop with no icons, sits then logs off. I've tried safe mode with the same result. I've tried booting with my XP cd with same result. I read somewhere that it might be a virus

I just put together a new system from scratch and regretting it BIG TIME, I have an intel d915GAG board with an intel P4 3.2 chip. Brand new WD HD, floppy, and 2 dvd/cd drives. After the final screw was tightened, I started my new system and the intel logo appeared. I pressed ESC and it appears to start the bios setup. It flashes my memory size (size is 512 MB), then the screen immediately flashes and begins to do and IDE scan, in which it promptly tells me that Device 0 not detected, device 1 not detected, device 2 not detected, device 3 not detected....and the setup stops right there. I don't have a clue, after searching Intel's site for 2 hours where to go from here.

I've had my computer for a while and have upgraded it many times. One such time was a few years ago when I went from Win98SE to WinME. Things were good for a while until I needed to reformat my harddrive, couldn't find my WinME CD and had to go back to Win98SE. Problem was, I have another harddrive, that I didn't include in the "downgrade" so it was unavailable after I loaded win98. I formatted that disk and things have been fine since.
I got an Ipod for Christmas and didn't notice when I bought it that it required 2000 or XP. I thought, not a problem, I'll just upgrade to XP. So last night, I upgraded and immediately noticed some problems. First of all, when I right click on the desktop, the computer freezes and you have to restart. Same thing happens if you're in a folder and try to create a new folder. My Sims2 game won't run (I've uninstalled and reinstalled wtih no luck)....

Desktop Manager allows you to switch between multiple desktops creating more elbow room for those who like to stay organized while pushing the max thread limit.1. First grab XP PowerToys from microsoft.com Once installed right click then check: task bar > toolbars > Desktop ManagerYou may now view up to four new desktops. I prefer not to have "Shared Desktops" on as it reminds me more of linux (and is cleaner). Now you may hide the buttons etc. and use Windows key + 1-4 to switch between desktops and Windows key + v to preview.

I was on the computer this morning (plugged into a power bar) when all of a sudden the power went out in my neighbourhood. I was just on the desktop at the time I believe. I unplugged everything to prevent anything from surging to be safe, and I went out for the day. When I got home, the power was back on, and so I plugged the computer back in. However, as I plugged in the computer, it turned on by itself. Normally it does not do this when I plug it in after it was forced to shut down for a blackout. I immediately knew something was up.When it started to turn on, it immediately went to a blue screen of death.
It won't get past this screen. I've tried Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Normal Mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. I also noticed it doesn't make the normal noises when it's booting up. It doesn't make that 'click click' sound when I'm booting up (I believe that's a hard drive sound?). I do have access to the Windows Recovery Console (I think - it appears as an option - I don't know if it will work) but I don't know what to do. It sounds like it did something to the hard drive... when I boot up the computer normally it asks me to press F1 (because my CMOS battery is low)... now on that screen it says Serial ATA at the top. I don't know why that is, or if this has anything to do with the low CMOS battery before, but I can't get it to turn on at all at the moment. I don't understand why the power failure would do this (or what it did)... I've never not been able to boot up after a power failure. And surely there wasn't a surge since it wasn't plugged in when the power came back on.Did it kill the HD? Anything I can do to at least recover some files?

I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 3100 desktop PC which when I turn it on first thing in the morning everything seems to be slow coming on. I have Avast AV, SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes which I scan with daily. This morning it took about an hour before I could use the computer, the SuperAntispyware banner which comes up every morning came up this morning and just froze on my screen, this stupid box which has something to do with my wireless connection kept popping up asking me to enter my username and password, I kept hitting cancel to make it go away, it wouldn't go away.

computer for a few days you would press the start button on the tower and it wouldn't start right away but then after a few sec would come on. Yester day I tried it twice I pressed the start button on the tower and you could hear the power supply try to start but would die and the computer would not come on. so about the thired time press the button and nothing, would even try to start. I figured it was the power supply. I put a tester on the power supplyh and it said it was bad, so I bought a brand new one put it in and it still would n't do anything just dead.I tested the new one and my tester sasid it was bad, I changed it for another one and the store I bought the 1st one from tested the 1st one and there tester showed it was good, so my tester must not be working.

I set it up so it assumes I am logging on and I am the administrator. How do
I get the privilege? It says I am an administrator in computer management,

I have just upgraded one of my old Windows 98SE computers to XP Pro. The installation went well. But, for some reason now after I shutdown the computer in order for me to turn it back on I have to unplug it from the power supply and then plug it back in. Before i upgraded the computer I was already having a shutdown problem with Windows 98SE.Every time that I would shutdown, it would restart on its own.I tried to trouble shoot the problem.I even downloaded a patch from the Microsoft Website but it still didn't work.So i figured if i upgraded it to XP it would solve the problem, but I ended up with a different problem.

Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

I have an HP desktop. I accidentally hit the standby button on the keyboard. It started to put my computer into standby but seems to have completely powered it down. I couldn't turn it back on at all. I've tried hitting the power button and unplugging the computer. Nothing works. There is a green light near the power cord in the back blinking and that's it. I've tried unplugging all peripherals before plugging the power back in. I've also tried unplugging it and pressing the power button a few times before plugging it back in. I just can't get it to turn back on.

My other computer is a hp using windows xp. The computer lost power and now program files will let me access any file in that folder, either through explorer or through any program that is in that folder. The computer is not connected to the internet and never has been. The computer is only used for backup of photos and backup files. Virus scan comes up with nothing. I tried the whole folder options thing.. no luck. When you check the properties of that folder, there nothing showing. Shows 0 mb in folder.

well i have read a lot about this problem but im dont think i really found a solution so i thought i would make a new thread. Well i was just on my computer using p2p file sharing program. and then my computer froze. first the program itself and then the whole computer just froze. So i held down the power button until it turned off and then i turned it back on and then i received this error. Disk boot failure. insert system disk and press enter.
I have my stuff backed up, i used it as a secondary and i backed up the things i needed, so i dont really care that much if i need to format. The funny thing though is that it actually froze once on my brothers computer when i was transferring files and when i restarted it wouldnt boot up and when i took out my hard drive my brothers computer booted up perfectly and after it booted up perfectly i shutted it back down and then i attached my hard drive as a slave again and then it booted up.

Here is what is happening...When you type user name and password you are again presented with User name and Password dialogue box. You try hard to get in but to no avail. (make things worse, I made the change to the registry!...don't ask!) See Microsoft Help...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555648/en-us
This solution could work if I had the computer on a network, but I don't.Basically I need to make the following change to the registry, but alas, I cannot get into safe mode and have not been able to make any changes in "repair(?)" mode when booting of XP cd.

Whenever I log on to a non-administrator account, my computer automatically logs itself off again before I get a chance to do anything. I see the logging on message, and before the desktop even shows itself, I see the 'saving your settings' message, and I'm back at the welcome screen. I'm pretty sure it's a bad configuration in one of the administrative tools. I'm running windows xp pro on service pack 2.

I have a windows XP box that is being recovered with Backup Exec 9.1 restoring the system completly, with system state. After it restores all the files and registry the computer needs a reboot, it comes up fine to a windows log in Ctrl-Alt-Del screen, you log into the system, it accepts the password for the local machine only, no domain access, and as soon as the Log in box disappears, the "Windows is Savings your settings" screen pops, just as if you did a start -> log out command. and that is all it will do, the hardware is the same, the system was running fine before the hard disk's motor died and crashed. the backup was from the week prior.
