Computer Slow To Power Up With Home SP2

Aug 24, 2010

I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 3100 desktop PC which when I turn it on first thing in the morning everything seems to be slow coming on. I have Avast AV, SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes which I scan with daily. This morning it took about an hour before I could use the computer, the SuperAntispyware banner which comes up every morning came up this morning and just froze on my screen, this stupid box which has something to do with my wireless connection kept popping up asking me to enter my username and password, I kept hitting cancel to make it go away, it wouldn't go away.

Limit Home Administrator Privileges - Power Users Security

Dec 2, 2006

I have a family PC running XP Home with six user accounts. All are administrator accounts and I prefer to keep them that way. The PC is firewalled and has AV and anti-spyware SW and I try to educate my family in safe computing practices.
My problem is that the 8, 11, and 15 y-o boys keep screwing up each others accounts (on purpose) by changing each other's passwords, or changing them to limited accounts. My 11 y-o for example, thinks his 8 y-o brother should not be allowed to install "Sponge Bob Whatever"; so he changes his account to limited. (Somehow he thinks it is ok though to install Limewire or Bearshare even after I tell him not to).Is there a way in XP Home to give users "Power User" privileges which will allow them to do most everything administrators can do, but not be able to access other user accounts?

PC Usage Slow After Power Outage?

Dec 11, 2004

Several weeks ago, we had a blackout. When I rebooted my PC, everything was slow. Programs, internet, everything. Looked all over the web for a solution but found nothing. Wound up reinstalling Windows, and the PC was running like new again. Two days after the reinstall, we had another blackout, and I'm right back to where I was before. I've scanned for spyware, defragged the drive. I'm a novice, so I'm not really sure what else can be checked.

Extreamly Slow System After Power Outage

Enermax were nice enough to test while I waited and replaced it for me this on the spot, great customer service on 14 month old P/S. Now I can power up the machine but it's extremely slow and the desk top just hangs.

Computer Running Slow - Not Just Internet Slow But Onboard Slow

May 10, 2010

Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

Desktop Manager For Power Users Must Have Power Toys

Aug 12, 2002

Desktop Manager allows you to switch between multiple desktops creating more elbow room for those who like to stay organized while pushing the max thread limit.1. First grab XP PowerToys from microsoft.com Once installed right click then check: task bar > toolbars > Desktop ManagerYou may now view up to four new desktops. I prefer not to have "Shared Desktops" on as it reminds me more of linux (and is cleaner). Now you may hide the buttons etc. and use Windows key + 1-4 to switch between desktops and Windows key + v to preview.

Computer Won't Boot Up After Power Failure

Apr 28, 2010

I was on the computer this morning (plugged into a power bar) when all of a sudden the power went out in my neighbourhood. I was just on the desktop at the time I believe. I unplugged everything to prevent anything from surging to be safe, and I went out for the day. When I got home, the power was back on, and so I plugged the computer back in. However, as I plugged in the computer, it turned on by itself. Normally it does not do this when I plug it in after it was forced to shut down for a blackout. I immediately knew something was up.When it started to turn on, it immediately went to a blue screen of death.

It won't get past this screen. I've tried Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Normal Mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. I also noticed it doesn't make the normal noises when it's booting up. It doesn't make that 'click click' sound when I'm booting up (I believe that's a hard drive sound?). I do have access to the Windows Recovery Console (I think - it appears as an option - I don't know if it will work) but I don't know what to do. It sounds like it did something to the hard drive... when I boot up the computer normally it asks me to press F1 (because my CMOS battery is low)... now on that screen it says Serial ATA at the top. I don't know why that is, or if this has anything to do with the low CMOS battery before, but I can't get it to turn on at all at the moment. I don't understand why the power failure would do this (or what it did)... I've never not been able to boot up after a power failure. And surely there wasn't a surge since it wasn't plugged in when the power came back on.Did it kill the HD? Anything I can do to at least recover some files?

Before i upgraded the computer I was already having a shutdown problem with Windows 98SE.Every time that I would shutdown, it would restart on its own.I tried to trouble shoot the problem.I even downloaded a patch from the Microsoft Website but it still didn't work.So i figured if i upgraded it to XP it would solve the problem, but I ended up with a different problem.

When Computer Freezes / Nothing Works / Only Turn At Power Button

May 31, 2010

Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.

The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

Slow Home Startup- Almost 3 Minutes!

May 17, 2005

Computer in question is a Dell Inspiron 1100, Intel celeron 2.0ghz, 128mbram, xphome sp2

The system takes almost 3 minutes to boot to desktop! I have tried removing nearly everything in startup using msconfig. I've run virus check (Norton), Spyware Removal checks (Adaware and Spysweeper), checked hijack log for any problems (almost empty), removed temp files, tweaked performance options, themes, removed unwanted programs, emptied recycle bin...everything I can think of to speed it up. The system doesn't have alot of extras on it so I'm perplexed. I tried loading another virus program on to see if maybe norton isn't working and its missing something but I got an error message about a .dll (I should've written this down!)

Extremely Slow Home Network

Mar 16, 2006

I have a home network set up through Windows XP in my house. I have 2 linksys routers. The modem plugs into the 'wired' router which is in my room beside me and then connects upstairs to a wireless router (better broadcast signal for my sister who uses her laptop upstairs).Anyways, for some unexplained reason, a couple months ago, I noticed that when we wanted to transfer files our shared folders weren't working, and if we tried to transfer through MSN Messenger or any similar program, the speed would be extremely slow, it would take forever to even transfer a simple mp3 file. Recently, I have noticed that the speeds of files I recieve from friends also take extremely long (a 1.5MB photo takes about 5 - 10 minutes) but when I download things off of websites I don't have that problem.

Home Slow Shutdown - Disabled Tfswctrl.exe

Jun 20, 2005

I ran into a Trojan and finally after many attempts to remove, ended up using Microsoft's malicious software removal tool. (Free) and Norton's 2002 with updates. No slowdowns now while on the Web or local use. However It takes forever to shutdown. I went in and changed the normal shutdown time from 20000 to 5000 that seemed to solve it. The next day it slowed down again. I followed the instructions at Microsoft's website called Startup and shutdown trouble shooter. I went to msconfig and followed instructions. I found that if I disabled tfswctrl.exe, It would shut down fast. I read in a posting that the file is a HP file concerning DVD or Cd operations and isn't essential. PS I did run REG Organizer 1.4 in the automatic reg cleaner mode and it found additional problems that it repaired and some bad folders and links that were bad. That didn't solve the shut down length.

So my question is there a way to solve this dilemma, like an update? or can I just keep it from running without effecting my 2 CD/dvd units. both are HP one is Cd write and DVD read and the other is DVD/CD write both.
