Reinstall Operating System Without A Disc
Dec 22, 2008Laptop new online so it came with Windows XP sp2 already installed. That I recall, it did not come with a disc or any included software. I've been having some major problems with my computer as of late and I'd just love to wipe the whole darn thing clean and reinstall everything, but I'm not sure if that's even an option if I don't have a disc. What other options do I have?

Jun 22, 2005I need to wipe clean the hard disc on a desktop. It currently has XP-Home installed, which was an upgrade from ME. The ME files were erased from the desktop after installation of XP. After formatting I assume I will need an MS-DOS bootup disc to install ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP-Home. If my assumptions are correct how can I create a bootup disc for ME? I am hoping that someone has a simpler method than I have outlined.

Sep 27, 2007When I purchased my lap top from Dell 2.5 years ago I made a backup OS CD. The computer did not come with the xp disc. I need to re-install the OS now-computer is slow, sluggish and just acting down right weird. I know its time, so as I gathered up the gutts to do this but when I popped in the cd and began the process it asked for the key number. I dont have that because I made the disc. I just followed the directions when I bought the computer. Now what do i do? I would rather purchase and upgrade to vista but when I ran the program to see if I could, there were some issues, plus its getting old and needs more memory, ram etc. Sooo this is the next best thing untill I breakdown and get a new PC.

Aug 5, 2009I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

Jan 14, 2009I have a toshiba laptop A105 sieries. I got a real nasty worm and could not get rid of it.I then stuck in the restore disc and did a complete erase of my harddrive. I am now trying to install the operating system off of the restore disc and I am not able to. Can someone please help me. I have went into the bios and set it to boot from dvd rom but then all it does is say recovering. 32 min later when it is done I try to boot from hard drive it ask me if I want to start windows normally. I select it and then nothing happens. I go back to bios and it says bood from hard drive but no go. If I go back into bios and have it boot from the recover disc it's the same thing all over. I don't know what I am doing and am a little confused no, really confused.

700Mb RAM20GB HDD256MB Graphics CardDVD Rom Not sure what the motherboard is, my HDD has the 'old' IDE connections.Anyway, everything has been running fine, so I decided to install a DVD RW unit instead of my CD/DVD unit.
That's when my problems started.PC now won't boot, asks me to install the boot device or something like that and when I check the BIOS, it says that the Pri / Sec units not installed. Even when I run the auto detection it still says the same thing. I've tried re-installing the old CD/DVD unit but it keeps coming up with the same message.

How To Replace Master Boot Record On Dual Boot System & Delete Linux Drive
Mar 8, 2006I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

Jul 17, 2005I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....

May 31, 2008I'm trying to fix my friends Hp and I usually know what im doing. But here I have no idea what to do. I tried going into the bios to change the boot order to cd to format and I can't. Can anyone tell me what to do.I changed out his hard drive with mine and it does nothing. just posts and goes to a black screen instead of trying to boot and blue screening as it usually do when you change hardrives between two computers.Changed the Ide cables no luck.

Sep 27, 2007I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
Cannot Burn Disc - Roxio Recognize Blank Disc

When I try to create a new folder on this CD and rename it after the "new folder" appears, the system crashes and reboots itself. Jul 19, 2005I get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
System Recovery For Gateway Laptop - Disc Is Corrupted
Oct 15, 2007I tried to install the Recovery System, from the original disc, onto a 2-year-old Gateway laptop, but appartently the TrayApp file (whatever that is) on the disc is corrupted. I can't get a new disc because Gateway no longer carries them. What else can I use? Can I buy a Windows XP (the original OS) update and install that? Can I use the recovery disc from another brand of computer, like Dell?

Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.
