System File Checker Not Recognizing Disc?
Sep 3, 2005
When I run system file checker it says: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM now."when I click More Information it says either I have inserted the wrong CD or the CD-ROM drive isn't working. I have the CD in, it just doesn't seem to be recognizing it.

I wrote this Guide on disabling System File Checker in Windows XP Professional. Sorry it's not in text form. You guys want it simple so anyone could do it, what could be simpler than looking at pictures (besides a program that will do it for you, which I've thought about...).http://www.overclockersclub.com/disablesystemfilechecker.shtmlContact: ProfessorXP@Yahoo.Com

I have a Western Digital 20 GB secondary internal hard disk as E:. It has been working fine for the last two years. Recently, while trying to access this disk, Windows displays message, "The disk in this drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" When I insert a CD into the D: it spins for ~5-10 secs but then shows nothing in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Does not even give me the usual prompt to, "Please insert a disk into drive D:". It doesn't hang Windows Explorer, just sits there with D: actually selected in left pane. This is particularly odd as normally one would get the "insert disk" prompt. To test for drive readability, I successfully *booted* from the Windows XP installation CD-ROM. It read the CD fine so not a defective or broken CD-ROM. This also rules out that maybe the CD I inserted was bad or had
scratches.
When I insert either om my two SanDisk USB 512MB flash, Windows Explorer "assigns" it a drive letter but does not show it as formatted, ie- "The disk in this drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Even if I do select to format the drive, the format process fails. This drive has beeen tested on two other WinXP installtions and works fine......

I just put an old win2k hd back in my computer and the DVD-R and CD-R/W drives are recognized as CD-R's (i.e., when I click on My Computer, I see two cd drives). These are a couple of el-cheapo drives I got from CompUSA which actually work really well. I can't find the driver disks which came with the drives so I don't know what to do.

I just recently re-formatted my Dell Dimension 3000 at work. I didn't have the original system disks and just installed a vanilla copy of XP Home. For some reason it will not read the ethernet port, making it difficult for me to install any new programs, or the obvious (get on the internet).

I just had Win XP Pro installed on my machine. Primary HD is 80 GB. The drive previously ran Win 98 SE. The tech formatted it and installed Win XP Pro. System runs fine and all appears to function OK. However, the drive capacity is not accurately displayed anywhere in the system (other than BIOS). I'm trying to find out how I can have the drive space accurately displayed.

I'm pretty computer savvy, but I've always struggled to confugure this RAID motherboard, but I've never encountered an error like this. I formatted a 60Gb Maxtor D740X-6L IDE drive with NTFS through an external harddrive connected to a laptop. THe drive is now blank. I connected this as a master on Channel 3 IDE on my Abit KG7 RAID mother board. I also connected my CD Writer to IDE channel 2 as a master, with a copy of WIndows XP in it. (I connected it like this because it doesn't recognise my harddrive on Channel 1 or 2 on the first page.)
When I try to boot I get the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. The strange thing is, as it boots it lists all four drive channels, and only shows Primary Master: 6L060J3 (presumably IDE channel 1). It does not show my CD writer, and infact the drive is connected to IDE channel 3. As you can see in attached photo1........

I have a USB 512-meg flash drive; brand new, outta the box. I used it on my computer at home with no problem--I plug it in, the computer recognizes it and it shows as another drive. However, my computer at work recognizes it and says "your device is ready to use" but it doesn't show up as a drive so I can't get into it. I've done the whole "troubleshoot" bit to no avail. Is there a way I can go to it manually or...? How can I see it so I can double click on it and get to the contents?

I noticed a while back that my hard drive light was going on every 1-2 seconds. accompanied by drive read/write noises. I checked Task Manager and was amazed to see that the Avast security software had performed 28 million i/o functions in one day. I removed Avast but continue to hear the drive working all day long. A check of Task Manager yesterday showed a combined 750,000 i/o reads by explorer.exe and crss.exe. I googled the problem but only found people exchanging thoughts on forums for page after page, with no resolution - after much back-and-forth discussion of explorer threads, etc.I really would like a solution. I've scanned for viruses, trojans, and rootkits - and, nothing. So I'm sure it's Windows. Does anyone know of a way to make the PC go quiet when I'm not actively reading/writing data or loading/exiting programs? BTW, the same thing happens in Linux Mint (I have a dual-boot system). I checked the Dell Dimension BIOS screen but didn't see anything that I (a not very tech-savvy user) thought could be causing the continual disk i/o activity.

I have a HP Pavillion computer and one of the programs, Memories Disc Creator, had a corrupt file. I was told by HP to perform a couple of tasks to try to bring it back and the end result was the file is now gone. HP sent me a series of discs to do a complete system recovery. I endanger losing all my installed programs. I have an external 80gb drive. Can I put all the programs on that drive and then have a quick reinstallaion of all the programs? Is there another way in which to access the program other that a complete recovery?

Using WinXP and OE as the mail program. When in mail program and choose, Tools>Options>Spelling and the 3rd choice in the dialog boxlisted is languages. This is where the problem is. I don't have the choice of English to choose from, ONLY French is the single choice when thumbnail is clicked. This controls mychoices in spell checker.Does anyone know how I can get English back on here as a choice as we have no use for the French choices in using the spell checker. This PC came pre-loaded with WINxp and OE from Dell so we have no installation CD.

I just noticed that I don't have a spell check on my new XP SP2 box. This is due to the fact that I don't have MS Word, Excel, or Power Point installed (according to Help). My question: Is there some other way to get a functioning spell checker without one of these programs?? I have Word Perfect (Corel), which doesn't help with OE and I doubt that the free Power Point Reader would incorporate spell checking

I got a 120 gb seagate harddrive, followed the instructions on install and made it the boot drive. I then wiped the old 40gb clean. I got notification from MS that due to significant hardware changes I had to run the genuine checker again. ok did it. I am having problems with random programs freezing up, just about anything done with either disk drive (dvd or cd)when done the program will hang up and a restart is the only way to get out of it (nero). I tried to open system restore and it will not open say a error occurred and it needs to shut down, want to send ms a notice. I ran error check on the drive its ok, I tried to run system file checker but it wont open either.I tried to run repair on the os (xp pro) but it is oem and that option is not available, only a complete reinstall which will lose my files.

I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....

I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

Is it possible to create a system restore disc, like the ones provided with new pc's?I have just used the restore disc for my brothers pc after many problems with corrupt system files that I couldn't repair. We have everything running ok at the moment and are about to install a new dvd writer.I intend to set a system restore point, but if the problem we have just recovered from should resurface, where I could not access windows I would like to be able to use the system restore disc in the future.Assuming that changing hardware would render the manufacturers restore disc useless, how can I create a disc that will be as straightforward to use as the original?

Laptop new online so it came with Windows XP sp2 already installed. That I recall, it did not come with a disc or any included software. I've been having some major problems with my computer as of late and I'd just love to wipe the whole darn thing clean and reinstall everything, but I'm not sure if that's even an option if I don't have a disc. What other options do I have?

I am using Windows XP Home OS. I have formatted a CD-R disc using Direct CD format utility. When I try to create a new folder on this CD and rename it after the "new folder" appears, the system crashes and reboots itself. I have been able to do this without any problem before and this has suddenly just occurred. I can't be sure if this is the first time I have tried this since updating to SP2. Can this be a problem with Windows Explorer?

I need to wipe clean the hard disc on a desktop. It currently has XP-Home installed, which was an upgrade from ME. The ME files were erased from the desktop after installation of XP. After formatting I assume I will need an MS-DOS bootup disc to install ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP-Home. If my assumptions are correct how can I create a bootup disc for ME? I am hoping that someone has a simpler method than I have outlined.

When I purchased my lap top from Dell 2.5 years ago I made a backup OS CD. The computer did not come with the xp disc. I need to re-install the OS now-computer is slow, sluggish and just acting down right weird. I know its time, so as I gathered up the gutts to do this but when I popped in the cd and began the process it asked for the key number. I dont have that because I made the disc. I just followed the directions when I bought the computer. Now what do i do? I would rather purchase and upgrade to vista but when I ran the program to see if I could, there were some issues, plus its getting old and needs more memory, ram etc. Sooo this is the next best thing untill I breakdown and get a new PC.
