View 1 Replies View RelatedAt all the other forums where I've volunteered, they treat ALL registry cleaners, reputable or not, as poison, if used by non-techies. At the very least they're considered a waste of time, as they don't really speed things up. If using CCLeaner, many techies say to use all the features except the registry cleaner part.I'd like to hear what other professionals here think. Don't even bother discussing the sleazy ones.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI noticed a while back that my hard drive light was going on every 1-2 seconds. accompanied by drive read/write noises. I checked Task Manager and was amazed to see that the Avast security software had performed 28 million i/o functions in one day. I removed Avast but continue to hear the drive working all day long. A check of Task Manager yesterday showed a combined 750,000 i/o reads by explorer.exe and crss.exe. I googled the problem but only found people exchanging thoughts on forums for page after page, with no resolution - after much back-and-forth discussion of explorer threads, etc.I really would like a solution. I've scanned for viruses, trojans, and rootkits - and, nothing. So I'm sure it's Windows. Does anyone know of a way to make the PC go quiet when I'm not actively reading/writing data or loading/exiting programs? BTW, the same thing happens in Linux Mint (I have a dual-boot system). I checked the Dell Dimension BIOS screen but didn't see anything that I (a not very tech-savvy user) thought could be causing the continual disk i/o activity.

View 5 Replies View RelatedUsing WinXP and OE as the mail program. When in mail program and choose, Tools>Options>Spelling and the 3rd choice in the dialog boxlisted is languages. This is where the problem is. I don't have the choice of English to choose from, ONLY French is the single choice when thumbnail is clicked. This controls mychoices in spell checker.Does anyone know how I can get English back on here as a choice as we have no use for the French choices in using the spell checker. This PC came pre-loaded with WINxp and OE from Dell so we have no installation CD.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that I don't have a spell check on my new XP SP2 box. This is due to the fact that I don't have MS Word, Excel, or Power Point installed (according to Help). My question: Is there some other way to get a functioning spell checker without one of these programs?? I have Word Perfect (Corel), which doesn't help with OE and I doubt that the free Power Point Reader would incorporate spell checking

I have the CD in, it just doesn't seem to be recognizing it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI got a 120 gb seagate harddrive, followed the instructions on install and made it the boot drive. I then wiped the old 40gb clean. I got notification from MS that due to significant hardware changes I had to run the genuine checker again. ok did it. I am having problems with random programs freezing up, just about anything done with either disk drive (dvd or cd)when done the program will hang up and a restart is the only way to get out of it (nero). I tried to open system restore and it will not open say a error occurred and it needs to shut down, want to send ms a notice. I ran error check on the drive its ok, I tried to run system file checker but it wont open either.I tried to run repair on the os (xp pro) but it is oem and that option is not available, only a complete reinstall which will lose my files.

XP Media is ten dollars less that XP Pro. Which should I choose? What is added to XP Media that I might not want? Lastly, since I am buying the upgrade version. I am guessing the version of Windows 98 SE that I have will work.

A very minor nuisance I know, but my pop up blocker requires me to hold control every time I want to open a new window. Is there an effective, free pop up blocker that doesn't require this effort (I sit at a funny angle to the right of my keyboard with my feet up!)I currently use Pop Up Stopper which is otherwise very, very good.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi'd jst like to know if eTrust EZ Antivirus (and also its Anti-Spyware and Anti-Spam) is a good option or not for regular use. And also is it a safer bet over Norton? have used it for barely 12 hours, so have no clue as to what its like.I know that Norton majorly slows down the PC and like tht but so far thats what im the most comfortable with. Ive used McAfee twice, for 2 months or so each time. It has let me down both the times, so looking for options apart from Norton. THough heavy on the system, i think its th best. Also, could someone help me with my graphics driver (+ virus) problem? posted the problem yesterday, emtronics has done his best to help me out but not much has really improved.. so if anyone else could also chip in and help me out.
View 12 Replies View RelatedBefore getting Win XP, I used Zone Alarm..it served me well.I used to test how good ZA was by using the tests found at www.grc.com. My PC always passed.I just tested my computer with grc's 'leak test' and it FAILED! My PC was penetrated.Does this mean that the firewall provided by Win XP is not doing it's job? If so, should I go back to ZA and disable XP's firewall? (2) I also just heard that Windows Media Player is also a good vehicle for spyware to infiltrate my PC. How can I stop this short of uninstalling the program?

Sometimes it completes with a success message. However the disks never boot. I get the following messages from the BIOS (abbreviated a bit!): Looking for boot record on floppy... OK I've tried with a least 7 different floppy disks, all with the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to work? I've also tried to make a MS-DOS boot disk on a Windows 2000 machine by downloading some freeware, but this does not work. I think the floppy drive is OK because I can boot from a Linux floppy disk (memtest86).
