At all the other forums where I've volunteered, they treat ALL registry cleaners, reputable or not, as poison, if used by non-techies. At the very least they're considered a waste of time, as they don't really speed things up. If using CCLeaner, many techies say to use all the features except the registry cleaner part.I'd like to hear what other professionals here think. Don't even bother discussing the sleazy ones.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a windows xp home edition sp2, with 2 Intel Pentium processors? I've try'd deleting startup programs, and i unleashed dozens of registry cleaners bud that makes no noticeable difference.This happens when i'm booting up;
- packard bell logo ( few seconds )
- windows loading bar (+-10 seconds)
I have just learned about Registry Mechanic. Is it a good investment or is it the same as Norton WinDoctor

I have an old computer I use just for bookeeping (about 8 years old) that I think needs the BIOS updated.Is it adviseable to use this type of software that scans your computer and automatically installs the drivers, and if so, could you recommend a reputable one that works well without any spyware?

I'm not talking about people just saying "oh I like x better". You can find millions of that online. What I'm talking about is someone doing real tests of cpu usage, bandwidth, latency, and overall quality of the sound. I do not have the tools to do such a test, but I bet the guys at TG do. What would be MOST useful are having various catagories. These catagories will be sorted by cpu usage, and bandwidth. For example: Compare the sound quality between TS and Vent when the cpu usage is exactly (or as close to) 1%, 3%, 5%. (this would be achieved by changing the sound quality until the cpu usage is these %). And then you could use sound capture for both to compare the quality.A similar test will be used to compare bandwidth vs quality. For example: set TS and Vent to use 1kb/s, 5kb/s, 10 kb/s, etc. and compare quality (with the bandwidth as close to each other as possible).

For example the whole win98 to w2k doesnt fly good because of the fat32 to ntfs deal. so what about upgrading w2k pro with ntfs to xp pro with ntfs? is this a good thing to do now a days or is it still better to just perform a clean install over my existing os. I really would like to keep my stuff intact, but I dont want a xp upgrade. So what type of issues have you guys had upgrading w2k to xp pro?

XP Media is ten dollars less that XP Pro. Which should I choose? What is added to XP Media that I might not want? Lastly, since I am buying the upgrade version. A very minor nuisance I know, but my pop up blocker requires me to hold control every time I want to open a new window. And also is it a safer bet over Norton? have used it for barely 12 hours, so have no clue as to what its like.I know that Norton majorly slows down the PC and like tht but so far thats what im the most comfortable with. Ive used McAfee twice, for 2 months or so each time. It has let me down both the times, so looking for options apart from Norton. My PC always passed.I just tested my computer with grc's 'leak test' and it FAILED! My PC was penetrated.Does this mean that the firewall provided by Win XP is not doing it's job? If so, should I go back to ZA and disable XP's firewall? (2) I also just heard that Windows Media Player is also a good vehicle for spyware to infiltrate my PC. How can I stop this short of uninstalling the program?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't make a good MS-DOS startup disk (for BIOS flashing) from XP SP2.I select the "Make an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog.Sometimes it gives up without a warning (i.e. the progress bar resets itself and the "Start" button goes active again). Sometimes it completes with a success message. However the disks never boot. I get the following messages from the BIOS (abbreviated a bit!): Looking for boot record on floppy... OK I've tried with a least 7 different floppy disks, all with the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to work? I've also tried to make a MS-DOS boot disk on a Windows 2000 machine by downloading some freeware, but this does not work. I think the floppy drive is OK because I can boot from a Linux floppy disk (memtest86).
