Lost The Ability To Run My Screen Savers
Feb 16, 2006
I have Windows XP on a Dell 8300. Recently. after running one of those programs that supposedly cleanup your registry, I lost the ability to run my screen savers. On the "Display" menu the spot where you are to decide the amount of time that is to pass before the screen saver comes up is greyed out. I am guessing that one or more of my dll's was removed or corrupted.

After doing some maintenance on my computer, simply removing old unused programs through the "add / remove programs" option in 'control panel', I lost my ability to have any XP based theme. While I was doing the cleanup a few programs asked me to restart or continue, I selected continue until I was done removing all of the programs that I no longer needed or used... Once I did restart it came back up and everything runs great, but No XP look

Did Windows recently send out any updates that would have removed the option to stretch or tile wallpaper on the desktop? As recently as last week I applied new Wallpaper to my desktop then as usual right clicked on the desktop and selected stretch to fill the screen. Today I again changed the Wallpaper but when I right click on my Desktop and select properties there is no longer any option button to select tile or stretch. While searching for information about this I saw a post by someone else who described the exact same problem.

I've gotten to the pulling the hair out stage with this. I have no right click ability in my standard PS2 mouse. At first I thought the mouse itself had failed but a scan with CCleaner's Reg Cleaner revealed a problem with the mouse shell. The .dll in question is:pxwma.dllAn SFC /SCANNOW and numerous reboots have failed to fix the issue, as has a re-installation of the driver or logging into Windows Update and checking for Hardware Updates (none available).I attempted to re-register the .dll but the response was that the module for it did not exist. I therefore download pxwma.dll and coppied it to my System 32 folder and tried to register it again. The response this time was

Just switched from Windows 98 to Windows XP Pro and would like to know if it is possible to get some of the old savers and themes that I had with the 98? there were quite a few that I liked but I do not have them with this OS. I do have the Windows 98 disk and was wondering if they would be on it and if so how would I install them to this system?

If anyone else was wondering how to get rid of the annoying Screen Savers that Microsoft feels you have to have with XP they made it a little more difficult than normal.
1. First navigate to “C:windowssystem32dllcache”. Cut and paste or type in your address bar to get there because it is a hidden folder. Once there, delete the Screen Savers in that folder. Otherwise, you will find that they will come back no matter how many times you delete them from your system 32 folder.
2. Then you have to go to C: Windowssystem32 and delete the Screen Savers you want to get rid of . (Answer the file protection popups with cancel and yes.)
3. Voila- no more Screen Savers!

how to get rid of the annoying Screen Savers that Microsoft feels you have to have with XP they made it a little more difficult than normal.
1. First delete the screen savers you want to get rid of in either C:Windowssystem32dllcache or depending on if or how you installed the Service Pack(s) also in C:WindowsServicePackFilesi386. (To see these folders you must have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options > View .)
2. Delete the screen savers in C:Windowssystem32 (always assuming your XP is installed in C:Windows). If you have omitted step 1. Windows file protection will replace the files within seconds. Voila---no more Screen Savers!

My wallpaper has disappeared even though it appears under display properities-themes. Under the desktop tab my wallpaper is set correctly. When I try to change the theme from modified theme to windows classic the change is not accepted. My screensaver was the picture slideshow and is now windows xp moves across the screen as the screensaver. When I try to change it back the change is not accepted.
This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.
Driver_IRQL_not _less_or_equal
stop:0x000000D1 (0x502F1F70, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0XF398B203)
VSDATANT.SYS - address F398B203 base at F3966000, Datestamp 4313a6c6
So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?

I know that I can unzip things with WinXP, but can I create a zipped file? I tried doing this with a large adobe acrobat file, and with a jpeg file, and although it SHOWED a new zip file, when I checked the size of the files, both of them were only five kb smaller than before. That's not much, I'm thinking, lol. What I did, was to right-click on the file and chose "send to" and then chose "compressed (zipped) file."

How do you edit user groups? I want to disable the ability to install (any) programs for all users except the one admin account. This is what I have so far:
going through control_panel>user_accounts> and switching the account to a limited doesn't work (some progs can still be installed).Going into computer Management gives me the ability to look at the groups and move user names from one group to another, but I can't edit/modify what each group is allowed to do. Right clicking on group and selecting properties gives me this.Going into Group_Policy allows me to edit what users can do, but it applies the changes to every user (including the admin).

I have a new Toshiba notebook running windows XP Home SP2. I set it up with two account users. I eliminated the welcome screen so that the primary user will be logged on automatically on power on. This turned out to be not a good idea because the primary user must be logged on before the secondary user can log on and I can't get the welcome screen back. I have it checked in both user accounts as well as fast user switching. I don't remember how I eliminated it in the first place so I can't remember how to get it back. Any suggestions?

Now at the XP Welcome Screen, none of the users show up; I had 4 before I reinstalled XP. If I cnt-alt-del, I get a login screen with one of the users already in the user box. I never set a password for that user, but the login asks for one. A blank just gets an incorrect password response.

I recently got the 'blue screen' on my IBM NetVista. various tech people and was told that 1.) my hard drive was gone; 2.) a bad virus had taken over the 'puter; and various other things. Being stubborn Scots-Irish, I decided to see what I could do before I gave up.
Started computer again, tapping the F8 key while it was booting up......ran all the system diagnostic tests and passed them, so I knew it wasn't the hard drive. Finally got it to boot back up, but of course, had lost all my data; ran all my recover info and got everything back except my 'Record Now' feature, which allows me to make data discs, copy existing discs, It should have been on one of the original discs that came with the computer, but I can't find it.
Problem is, I want to save all my documents, games, addresses and such as back-up. How can I do that without my Record Now feature?
Is there a way to find that specific program on my Recovery discs and install lit to make my back-up copies? I haven't tried to copy to the floppy discs because it takes so many of them.

After many times removing viruses from my computer, I am dual booting both windows xp and windows 7. I primarily right now use windows xp, I lost the ability to get into windows xp, when at the dual boot screen I click on windows xp but I just get a black screen with no cursor, I cannot get into safe mode either. My google chrome stopped working and could not connetc to any websites. Windows 7 was working perfectly. I have scanned from within windows xp and from windows 7 to find as many viruses and trojans as possible. a trojan remover told me my ftdisk.sys was infected with win32/patched.dx. I moved it into the virus vault knowing it was an important system file as I did not think I had a choice. I then extracted the original ftdisk.sys from the xp cd and replaced it, I know that service packs can modify original files and I hoped the original file was the same as the infected one. That did not have an effect. I used recovery console to run fixmbr and no effect. I then ran fixboot.exe and chkdsk /r and next thing I know I do not get a boot screen at all.
Please help me as I cannot get into either windows now. Would fixboot.exe or chkdsk remove my boot screen?

Many problems with viruses and then windows xp and windows 7 both went down, just a black screen after posting, no cursor, not even safe mode available. I repaired windows xp using the xp recovery console. Reinstalled while keeping all my files and folders intact. Now my only problem is that the dual boot menu for windows xp and windows 7 has disappeard. I can only choose to log into windows xp.
Could you help me identify an easy way to bring back the option to log into windows 7. From windows xp I can clearly see my other hard drive, which has windows 7 on it, and access it so it has not been lost or formatted which would be strange if it was.

Video driver not working, blank screen after Windows logo.
OS Windows XP-1 upgraded to XP-2.
Lost my video driver, on my older HP 951 computer.
It came with XP-1, I upgraded a long time ago.
I tried to recover with both the XP-1 & XP-2 disks, won't work.
I have net access, obviously on a newer computer.
Is there a way I can download a driver and install it on my 951, OR recover the driver, that must be there?
It boots up, but after showing the Windows "Logo Screen", it's black. I just have some old info. and files on it, I really would like to keep.

then i lost all desktop settings and his internet connections as well. Even though the password is unticked it still keeps coming up when i start the computer and insists on a password.
How do I:
Remove the password or logon screen completely
Find his lost desktop settings?

1.I have a dell digital jukebox mp3 player that allows for storage of data or music. I tried to copy a 600mb file from the mp3 player onto my hard drive. I had a little over 600 mb of space left on my hard drive (a total storage capacity of 6GB). It said i had run out of space. So i deleted some files, move some things around and i had 1.1 GB of space free for this transfer. i tried again and this time again the message i got was not enough space on drive c:/. So i cancelled out and checked to see what i had on my hard drive, 500mb free!!!?? So i have lost hard drive space and not gain a file...So i investigated and found that i have 1.81 GB of data on c: documents settingsuser. but once i get into user, i have 6 folders none of which display nearly that much data. They are, favorites, start menu, cookies, desktop, my documents, and a file named ntuser. the ntuser file is 1mb, and my desktop has 700 or so mb on it. So my question is how can i get back this lost hd space,
2.Blue screen. Im on xp pro sp1, i use adaware, registry mechanic, and im generally tidy with my windows; note, reinstalling windows did not solve this. I never used to have this issue, but lately when i go to open or close certain programs i jump to blue screen. it references trixdp.dll i think it was, and then "begin physical dump of memory" i must reboot at this point. I use VLC media player, and exiting this program mandates a blue screen. Just now i exited mozilla browser and this was the first time i got blue screen from this program.
