Lost The Ability To Stretch Or Tile Wallpaper In XP
Feb 28, 2009
Did Windows recently send out any updates that would have removed the option to stretch or tile wallpaper on the desktop? As recently as last week I applied new Wallpaper to my desktop then as usual right clicked on the desktop and selected stretch to fill the screen. Today I again changed the Wallpaper but when I right click on my Desktop and select properties there is no longer any option button to select tile or stretch. While searching for information about this I saw a post by someone else who described the exact same problem.
For some reason, my desktop/wallpaper isn't going all the way to the right margin. There is about a 1/2" area of just black at the far right side. I checked my settings and it's set to be "centered". I tried the "stretch" setting and that didn't work either. I haven't messed with any settings or recently installed any new software.
After doing some maintenance on my computer, simply removing old unused programs through the "add / remove programs" option in 'control panel', I lost my ability to have any XP based theme. While I was doing the cleanup a few programs asked me to restart or continue, I selected continue until I was done removing all of the programs that I no longer needed or used... Once I did restart it came back up and everything runs great, but No XP look
I have Windows XP on a Dell 8300. Recently. after running one of those programs that supposedly cleanup your registry, I lost the ability to run my screen savers. On the "Display" menu the spot where you are to decide the amount of time that is to pass before the screen saver comes up is greyed out. I am guessing that one or more of my dll's was removed or corrupted.
I've gotten to the pulling the hair out stage with this. I have no right click ability in my standard PS2 mouse. At first I thought the mouse itself had failed but a scan with CCleaner's Reg Cleaner revealed a problem with the mouse shell. The .dll in question is:pxwma.dllAn SFC /SCANNOW and numerous reboots have failed to fix the issue, as has a re-installation of the driver or logging into Windows Update and checking for Hardware Updates (none available).I attempted to re-register the .dll but the response was that the module for it did not exist. I therefore download pxwma.dll and coppied it to my System 32 folder and tried to register it again. The response this time was
my computer Seems it ran and ran behind the scenes when I booted up and would take 10 minutes to hit another key and wait again. I went to MSCONFIG and removed the x from most ot the start up programs. It now works but some where I lost my ability to get on line or onto Outlook express. I have highspeed cable, with a backup computer, my backup computer works I have tried the hookup wizzards several times but in vain
My wallpaper has disappeared even though it appears under display properities-themes. Under the desktop tab my wallpaper is set correctly. When I try to change the theme from modified theme to windows classic the change is not accepted. My screensaver was the picture slideshow and is now windows xp moves across the screen as the screensaver. When I try to change it back the change is not accepted.
This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.
Driver_IRQL_not _less_or_equal stop:0x000000D1 (0x502F1F70, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0XF398B203) VSDATANT.SYS - address F398B203 base at F3966000, Datestamp 4313a6c6
So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?
I exported a backup of the registry to the desktop, and now when I remove that registry back up file from the desktop to another folder, the wallpaper disappears.I tried to import it again from that another folder but it didn't make any difference. I don't want to keep the reg file on my Desktop. How can I restore the registry so my wallpaper shows up, and delete the reg file from the desktop.
The last thing I want ANYONE to see is My Pictures. Why is this damn thing offering THAT place as first choice for dektop wallpapers? I pointed it (browsed to) Windows/Web/Wallpapers but it STILL insists on my pictures included there! And there is no obvious, clear cut way to change it, I have to google all over the place to find the damn answer! Pure wasted time. to remove that place and prevent it from ever showing up as a first choice for wallpapers?
Windows that the program opens for that particular worksession are in another order than it used to be. As a consequence of that, the tiles on the bottom of the screen are now in a different order than what I am used to. I want to change that so that the tiles on the bottom of the screen are in the same order as before.
Program does not appear to allow any changes in the order in which it opens the windows, so the only option would then be to change the order of the tiles after opening a worksession.
I am wondering if it is possible to find the location of where your wallpaper pic is temporarily stored while it is your current wallpaper. The reason I ask is because I thought I saved the pic before I made it my wallpaper, but I cannot locate the file. Also, is there a way to find out the name of the file? Then I could do a search, but as it is, Desktop properties just labels it "Internet explorer wallpaper
I have a 27" Dell Monitor with a Radeon X850XT card. Never had a problem with it and this new problem has just come out of no where. All background wallpapers leave a big gap down the left hand side of my screen. The pic's are big enought o fit the screen resolution and if I choose a smaller pic and 'center' it in display properties it does not center..I have just updated drivers and no change.Have WINXP ser pack 2
I know that I can unzip things with WinXP, but can I create a zipped file? I tried doing this with a large adobe acrobat file, and with a jpeg file, and although it SHOWED a new zip file, when I checked the size of the files, both of them were only five kb smaller than before. That's not much, I'm thinking, lol. What I did, was to right-click on the file and chose "send to" and then chose "compressed (zipped) file."
How do you edit user groups? I want to disable the ability to install (any) programs for all users except the one admin account. This is what I have so far: going through control_panel>user_accounts> and switching the account to a limited doesn't work (some progs can still be installed).Going into computer Management gives me the ability to look at the groups and move user names from one group to another, but I can't edit/modify what each group is allowed to do. Right clicking on group and selecting properties gives me this.Going into Group_Policy allows me to edit what users can do, but it applies the changes to every user (including the admin).
i am trying to get my bluetooth setup however my computer will not let me turn on discovery mode once i check the box and click apply it gives me and error message that simply says unable to turn on discover ability
I have burned some photos onto a CD -R and have gone back into the cd drive but they are missing!! where have they gone. The photos were definitely burned on. I thought that once on a cd nothing could be lost.
when I switched on my computer when I got to the xp wellcome page inviting me to sign in i clicked sign the screen went priefly go's to my home page with no icons and no taskbar nothing, then go's back to the wellcome page again, every time i click sign in it happens again, help me!
after an attack with some bad viruses or something,i noticed my option to change my wallpaper has disappeared? and im so sick of the wallpaper i have right now..
My desktop suddenly went the default XP blue and when i right clikc and go into the properties, the desktop tab is all disabled meaning i cant change it. I am running XP SP2. Before this happened i did find some malicious software on my pc that random installed itself from a website. I think this could have lead to it. Any ideas of how i could fix this? Attacked i have my hjt log file. Any help will be great. Also if anything else has come up from the log?
I had a few adwares on my O.S. (win XP HE), but I managed to remove them all except for one little trace. I've tried many removal tools, but none seems to be helping with this last problem that is anoing me.I can't change my wallpaper. What actually happens is that when I try to scroll down the "Background" scrollbox at the "Display Properties". "Desktop" window.I believe it has something to do with policies, but windows xp Home Edition is very limited in what comes to policies and it has no editor. By regedit I couldn't find any policy key that would actually make me believe it was it. I already tried to google this issue, but I can't find anything concrete. The closest clue I have is that this was caused by a spyware installed to advertise a spyware software, which installed itself and changed my desktop wallpaper to a black image that said that I was infected with malware and I needed a spyware software to resolve the problem. The image also said something claiming it was from Microsoft and they suggested a product.
This is a friends computer she has asked me to work on so I don't know how or when it happened. When you try to change the desktop (wallpaper) the different ones are still listed but you can not highlight them to switch from one to another. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a wallpaper that is always off centre, to the bottom right. Even when i try and stretch it out. It happens with all wallpapers, so i know its not a problem with the wallpaper itself.
My network at work has started force feeding everyone the same wallpaper image. Since they started doing this my old wallpaper is still there and shows up when I pull my CAC card or lock my computer. My question is: what is my old wallpaper's file name? I'd like to be able to change that image even if I can't change my wallpaper.
I have a 2GB RAM + 2.5 GHz + nVidia Pro motherboard + Windows XP PC.
Everytime i start my PC, after loggin in, it just displays the wallpaper. NOTHING ELSE! No mouse right clicks, no windows button works! Cannot work on it AT ALL!
It seems like it has hung, but if i try a Cntrl+Alt+Del, the task mgr screen opens up and i can select a single program by "New Task" and run it! so, definitely there is a normal PC running behind that wallpaper!
Now, heres the frustrating part -
I have had this issue after formatting the PC for abt 7 times till now! the antivirus (tried all) run immediately after a format shows nothing now - and still the issue would crop up after 2-3 days again!
I am really terrified with this, seems like a major virun attack as my PC shows up behavorial changes each time coupled with the above issue!
