why my laptop has been running SO slow for so long? On everything it does.
I'm a junior/intermetiate computer user but need my computer for SO many things in my life and studies.It is an HP za4610 with a 1.83Gig AMD proccesor, 512meg RAM running XP Home.
My problems are a very long boot up (go away and make a coffee length) and also slow running, especially in opening progs for the first time ie, very slow to open Word initially, then much faster opening subsequent Word files. Even so, the laptop has slowed considerably and is often hesitant.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin, and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers".
I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM. Used disk space is 16.8 GB, unused space is 57.6 GB....
I have posted this problem before and haven't really gotten it resolved. My computer takes so long to load pages its driving me crazy. I feel like I am on dial up. it takes like a minute for a page to load. I have tried the AFT cleaner

I mean like 8 minutes or more, could it have to do with the programs that are started when the computer strarts if so how can I find the folder. I am using windows XP home edition I have a 40GB hard drive I only have used 6 gigs of it. I have 256MB of RAM. This problem is new it never took this long.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a maxtor hard drive SATA 200GB as my main drive and a second drive D. Very recently when I have noticed that my computer took longer to boot into windows. Applications seem to take a bit longer than usual to load. I have XP SP2 installed. I defragment my drive every few weeks so its not a defragment problem however when I try to defrag it now, it takes many times longer to do so. Also for a scan disk of C: (chkdsk on boot) it took 6 hours to get to about 25%. So there must be a problem. I can hear the hard drive loading sound for a few seconds and then there is a very long pause maybe about 10-20 minutes. It should only take a few hours the last time i did it maybe about 5 hours. Something is wrong.
When I transfer a large file like 1gb into my drive D it takes 15 minutes. Which is a bit long for a SATA enabled hard drive. I have had this drive for about 2 years now and it has never gone this slow before. I have downloaded the seatools from the maxtor website which diagnoses the drive. The tool ran slow but my hard drive passed the tests. Also when I ran that scan disk, it did say there was a mirror copy of something and also some other things. I think it had the word security in it so it deleted somethings. It mentioned indexes and some files. I forgot most of it.
I have checked my D drive and it is running fine and unaffected. Also I noticed during bootup that on the windows logo screen, the one with the bar moving from left to right that it freezes for about 5 seconds somewhere near the end of its loading. Then my keyboard lights come on (recognises keyboard). Later after the logo disappears, the screen is black for about 1-2 minutes and the hard drive periodically stops loading then starts loading something. This also happens when the welcome blue background screen comes on which is making boot times slow. Also happens when I shut down. There are some periods of hard disk inactivity.
I just upgraded my computers ram from 256 to 512 mb. the technician added a lot of programs such as virus protection and other hardware. It still takes 5 minutes to get on line. I have a motorola sb4100 modem. What gives?

It takes 5 to 6 minutes to boot and then takes on some dialog boxes when clicking 7 seconds to activate, (Show on Screen) and on others, takes 14 to 21 seconds to activate? Sometime you even see the searching flashlite on the screen when you click. The same thing happens with the right click context menu. This computer is a HP a430n running a AMD Athlon(B) XP 3200+ running at 2.20 GHz. So whenever i start up the computer once it hits the Blue Welcome Xp screen it will stay there for atleast 30sec, i mean my mouse shows and i can move it but im just waitin there until it fully loads. View 14 Replies View RelatedAnyhow, on my second laptop, my roommate borrowed it and of course has no idea what she could've possibly ever done. She's probably a lil' too dense to realize if she download or got some kind of virus using it. And, of course, she didn't bother telling me right away so when I went to start up the laptop one day, it was going extremely slow.It took about 10 minutes for the laptop to boot to the windows login screen. Any mouse movement whether on the mousepad or when I hook up my USB mouse takes about 1 minute to register any movement. I haven't even been able to get to the main desktop screen. (I'm trying as I type.. but, judging by the length of how long it took the other stuff, I could be in for a long wait.) Even when I typed in the password it took about 5 minutes for it to seemingly type out.. but the "dots" cut off so I have no idea if it actually will go through or not or if I will get the "incorrect password" error message.

It's just terribly slow.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a main WIN XP Home Edition based computer with an Intel 3118 chip, 2GB RAM,190GB Hard drive with 126GB free, additional drive via USB with 470 GB and 399GB free and networked with a laptop and Dell computer all able to read each other. On the main computer I have 60+ icons on the desktop and have Zone Alarm Security Suite and Forcefield running updated.I have cleaned all computers with Crap Cleaner and Esaycleaner have defragged and deleted all unwanted files but still it takes some 9-10 minutes to boot from hot or cold and the close down of programs also takes between 1-2 minutes.

It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. View 6 Replies View Relatedever since I downloaded an episode of a TV show I missed last week (yes, bad idea..) my laptop has been acting up. It takes forever to open web pages if it will do so at all, and programs will give error messages and close. The messenger program will pop up showing others I am online although I have chosen all the options not to do that. I am sure it is a virus or some malware/spyware, but I run Norton (up to date) and Spyware Doctor (also up to date) and they can't find anything except a few adware cookies to delete. How do I find out what's causing this and get rid of it? It must have come in with the peer to peer program I would think?

Computer: Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop running XP.
Problem: A few weeks ago, the laptop became noticably slower to boot. I get an hourglass that lasts for maybe a minute. I can't do anything until it goes away.

Not to sure if I poseted in the right place or not. I'm currently working on a friends laptop and was hoping I could get some help here. She has a Gateway laptop running Windows XP. It is running very slowly. If you restart of shutdown there are always certain files that always pop up as not responding. These are the same files that show up in Task manager as not responding. Her Microsoft Antispyware icon when double clicked never starts the application. Here is a list of the files that always show up as not responding.

Its really slow and sluggish even though I just re-installed. I have a backup hard drive too so I don't have to use all my space. Is it time for a new one? I don't want to put a lot of money into it if I should just upgrade to better machine. I use it as my main computer. I've got a nice laptop but was having major problems with it (running slow, etccc)........ so about two weeks ago I formated the machine.... it was working perfect only now the screen starts to freeze, the mouse freezes.
I sometimes have problems switching it on......... of course also the blue error screen appears now as well....... i just don't know what's happening...... when i enter secure website such as credit card merchants such as protyx the system freezes
I started getting ad popups and it started running very slowly. I didnt think anything of it at first but then it started freezing and having a hard time closing windows and it was BARLEY running. And the bar at the bottom would disappear. I had to restart the dern thing 5 times just bc even ctrl/alt/del didnt even work closing these windows. Then it happened. One day when I was trying to restart it, It was in the middle of booting, and when the 'Windows is starting' screen comes up, the blue one right before you would select a user and put in a password comes up, the laptop just CLICKS OFF then restarts the rebooting loop over and over again.
