Laptop Goes To Sleep Overnite And Disconnects From The Net?
Apr 27, 2007
I run WinXp on a Compaq Presario C304NR laptop. I connect to a wireless network in my building and often d/l laaaaarge files overnite while sleeping, but my pc always goes into a sleep mode (and the wireless modem light turns off for some reason) while other running programs stay running. How can I keep my pc running in normal mode for a long period of time w/o the screen going blank and disconnecting from the wireless network?
Disconnect after 20 minutes is not enabled. Download accelerators don't work with all downloads.I have checked my port speed.Dell had 2 driver updates. I downloaded and installed them. THe transfer rate on downloads is 2.08 kb/sec.Downloads still time out. I am having problems with downloads timimg out. I am unable to download anything over 500 k. I have contacted Dell and my ISP, I have deleted temp files, cache, cookies, etc. I also use Spybot S & D, Ccleaner, Disk Cleanup, and Defrag. None of the above seem to help. I am so frustrated! I am attaching a thumbnail of a download. Is there a way I can speed up the downloads or prevent the timeouts?
my computer seems to keep diconecting from the net, wellwhen i say it disconnects, i mean that when i first put the comp on its fine then after a few mins i cant get any pages up the little tv screens dissappear from the task bar and any browser iuse says page cannot be found if i go into my network settings it says i am connected and if i rebooteverything is fine again, imrunning windows xp and using telewest cable modem even tryed ispconnection test and it says it is fine, stepson is running wireless of the same cable modem and has no problems.
Well I get the message"Generic Host Processes has encountered a problem and needs to close"Also option to Send and don't sent the error report. When I click on Don't send option,My net connection disconnects automatically after few seconds.I know many people have reported that it is a virus and for this I have installed Antivirus also. But this is the only virus Iam encountering everytime I reinstall Windows XP.
When starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank. he press the sleep button on the keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box. After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users. He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop.
The "sleep" button on my computer keyboard won't effect the hibernate function on my Windows XP Home Edition computer. It worked well until several months ago and then, all of a sudden, it stopped functioning. I can get it to hibernate by using Start-Turn Off Computer-Stand-By, but the "Sleep Button" does not work. I did some Internet research and one site indicated that it might be a driver problem.
I have just put together an i7 930 with an Intel DX58SO using XP Pro and USB K/Board and Mouse. How do I make it come out of sleep mode? Even the power switch doesn't do it.Reset is the only button that works but that resets of course.
I got problem with his desktop XP SP2 , when he starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank (i.e he can not see the login name for users). What he used to do: is press the sleep button on the wireless keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box. After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users. He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop
System has always run well, until I noticed the CPU cooler fan had started to rattle. So I cleaned the heat sink fins, replaced the cooler fan, and fired her up. BUT after awhile, (usually 15-30 minutes), and after the screen saver has kicked in (5 min) the screen goes black, and the system will not respond. If I hit a key the HD light comes on, but that is about it. When I shut the system down, and try to reboot, I get absolutely nothing, no POST, nada. IF I let the system sit overnight, it will reboot the next morning. Checked in the BIOS hardware monitoring section, and CPU temp and speed never rise about 60 C, (shutdown is 110C). Checked Windows, and power scheme is set for nothing to shut down, ever (monitor, HD, etc), and its not set to hibernate. Problem did not occur until I opened the case and replace the CPU cooler fan.
how to get standby and/or hibernate and/or sleep buttons when shutting down? I installed Dell reinstall sp 2 as a clean OS. My computer goes into sleep mode immediately when i start it. Ive tried to reset the CMOS, but it doesnt help. After about 30 secs it emits a series of fast beeps. It just stays with a black screen, i dont even get a booting screen. What is causing this?
I recently had to re-install Windows XP, and now when the computer comes back from sleep the taskbar is at the top of the screen and is non-responsive leading me to have to restart my computer every time it goes to sleep. The easy answer would to not have the pc go to sleep, so i tried that, and even when it goes to screen saver mode, after being in that for more than 30 minutes, the problem occurs. Anyone have an idea of what is going on?
the S3 sleep state to work on the Tyan Thunder K8N motherboard running WindowsXP Pro x64? When I check my sytem from within Windows, it only says it supports S1 and S4 sleep states... I have the most recent motherboard bios and all other 64-bit updates installed... but for whatever reason, no utility, test programs or even Windows itself sees that this motherboard supports the S3 sleep state. It's a logo'd desktop motherboard, so it is supposed to support S3, but I can't for the life of me get WinXP Pro x64 to recognize that it does.
The problem is that whenever I "switch user" (win + L) out of my account for someone else to log on their account, when they try logging off, my monitor acts like if I was putting the computer into sleep mode. That is, it goes black and some messages come up on the screen saying the usual "check power etc" messages and the light flashes. The computer continues to run and there is no way of restoring my screen so I am forced to press the main power button on the computer tower.
I have a home built machine running XP Pro. It is a clean installation since had some recent other problems with it and completely formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP. I have added all the Window updates including sp3. I have a GE Force 6200 video card and have installed all the drivers but the machine will not enter sleep mode either manually or automatically (I mention this because I have read elsewhere this was a problem for Vista but haven't seen anything anywhere for XP). I even set the bios to force sleep mode and nothing happened.
I have realtek audio 97 build in sound on a win media center XP machine. Sound is fine on boot-up, but after energy-saving sleep modes I may or may not lose it. Device manager says all working fine. Soundman.exe checked in start menu, but no icon in tray. Oddly, on shutdown the sound will return and play the log-off sound. Any ideas?
my computer suddenly displays a message."entering sleep mode" and restarts. I have my settings in power management in control panel set at never for turn of hard drive etc, etc...so in theory, my pc should never shut down on its own??....also, both IE and firefox from time to time get a message "...has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.." when this happens I send the report to whereever. and restart my browser...I've tried running in safe mode and still get the same problems....more ofter w/IE than firefox
I have a HP Pavilion (new 1/06) with Windows XP, Avast 4.7 Anti-Virus(free version) and Zone Alarm(ZA) Anti Spyware(I purchased ZA for one year). When reactivating computer from sleep mode, it will not reconnect to the internet or my e-mail program without restarting the computer. As soon as I try to reconnect, the ZoneAlarm Icon becomes active and for some reason does not allow a connection to be completed
The problem that I am having is with my HP Pavilion XT983 Desktop Computer. It will not boot up when I power it on. The power light is on and the monitor is in sleep mode. The only thing that is operating is the fan. I have tried rebooting with the boot up diskette but it is not reading my A: drive. It also will not read CDs.
I can't figure out why my computer is going into sleep mode. I have the power settings to "always on" -- but maybe 15 minutes or so after the screensaver comes up, the computer goes into sleep mode. I guess it's sleep mode, the monitor goes dark and all I have to do is slightly move the mouse and the computer "wakes up". Also, there are a few things on my HJT log that I'm wondering what they are, how they got there, and can I get rid of them. The issues I'm talking about will be bolded in red
I have a advent 9515 laptop and i have lost my recovery disc can any 1 tell me where to get a copy of it that dose not cost a bomb cause i have a virus on my laptop and need the disc.
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.I hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive. My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
Just got my new laptop in and now I need to transfer files off my old one to the new. What is the easiest way to do that? I have several gigs that I need to move over.
I've been given a laptop (dell latitude l400) which has had the hard drive wiped clean. All i have is the floppy drive. When i run the XP boot disk, i get an error message of ' bootinfo.inf', whereas when i run a 98 boot disk it does at least get further but stops at the C: prompt but cannot get anything else to work. I have run a Dir check and found that all the hard drive recognises is the command file. Also i have tried an external cd drive but cannot get the laptop to recognise it.
I have brand new acer .I have disabled a few things but could do with a bit of help on the rest.Trouble is I am not too sure what they are for, tried reading the manual, ended up even more confused.I basically go on I.E and Google things and read this website, that's about it.
Blue screen comes up after logging in with : "Checking file system on C: Type of file system is FAT 32 One of the disks needs to be checked for consistency Windows is verifying files and folders
Checks until 100% completed then shows "Windows has made corrections to file system".
Then goes back to windows is starting up and then log in again. Cannot find a way to break this loop. Is this virus or Windows fixing itself. Problem started out of the blue, nothing like it before (over 18 months). how can i get rid of it?
My Acer Laptop when I turn it on I receive a POPUP saying In blue eRAgent and under that An invalid encounter I click OK and it goes away. Anybody knows what it means?
A laptop that I have to turn in soon. I use this more or less as a personal laptop (I work from home). I want to clean this up (remove history, etc) before I send it back to the company. I am not really trying to hide anything, but more prefer to not let them into my personal life. Please do not start preaching about ethics, or that it is a company comuter, etc....
The computer is a Dell Latitude D610, with Win XP. I have done the basics, like the Browser history, but I am more concerned with anything that may be kept in the registry, etc.
Buying a new laptop never had 1 before any ideas for a cheap and cheerful 1 i have this desktop upstairs so i want a laptop downstairs while watching tele cheers x
